Electric Turbo for Next BRZ?

As we await the next Toyota Supra, after giving up all hope that either Subaru or Toyota would finally give us a more powerful FR-S/BRZ, Subaru has come out with some interesting new talk about the much beloved, yet woefully underpowered 86 twins.

Last year, Toyota said that a turbocharged FR-S and BRZ were out of the picture, even though customers and executives wanted one. According to Toyota, turbochargers are impractical for the cars, due to potential problems. However, according to Subaru’s STI boss, Yoshio Hirakawa, they are looking at possibly adding advanced technology to make the cars faster. Possibly even using an electric turbocharger.

“This is a sensitive subject, but it is under study for the STI model,” Hirakawa told Motoring.com.au. Sure it is, but let’s just hope that it actually comes to fruition, because the S-FR isn’t the answer enthusiasts were hoping for. If we are to get a more powerful FR-S/BRZ, then it would likely come out in the car’s next generation, sometime in 2018. So they still have some time.

What do you all think about this? Should the 86 twins go electrically boosted? Or should they just plop the WRX engine into the car and call it a day?
