Next Gen FR-S to Get Miata Underpinnings?

Alright folks, get ready for one of the weirdest (possibly stupidest) rumors ever to be repeated on the internet about cars. And that includes the often mentioned and never real RX-7 replacement. According to Motoring, the rumor capital of the automotive world, the next generation FR-S/BRZ/GT86 will share its underpinnings with the new ND Miata.

Now, for this next part, it becomes a bit of a confusing web, which you have to piece together in order for any of this to make sense. As we saw with the current 86 platform, Toyota teamed up with Subaru to build the car. Toyota has also teamed up with BMW for what will most likely be the next Supra. Now, Toyota is teaming up with Mazda for the development of a Prius based SUV. However, we already know that the Toyota/Subaru relationship isn’t exactly cordial, based on Subaru’s issues with the contract details for modifying the BRZ.

These issues and new partnerships lead many to believe that Toyota will possibly head to Mazda for help with the next generation 86 platform and share the architecture with the Miata and Fiat Spyder. And if you can follow all that, congratulations, you’re the only one in the world.

So what do you think of this rumor? Would you want to see a smaller FR-S/GT86?
