Super GT300 BRZ: the BRZ We All Want and Need

When Subaru and Toyota debuted the BRZ/FR-S twins, the world was stunned that they had actually built a front engine, rear wheel drive car for this century. It was a media phenomenon, much like the Dodge Hellcats. However, quickly after the car debuted, everyone pretty much came to the conclusion that the new Toyobaru twins were hideously underpowered.

Fast forward three years, and the car still hasn’t received a bump in power, even though customers and journalists are clamoring for it. I myself have had enough of my own FR-S and its lack of power, so in the next few months, it’s being traded in for something with at least 300 horsepower. However, if Toyota or Subaru would bring this GT300 BRZ to the States for public consumption, I’d probably change my mind.

For those of you that don’t know, GT300 is a form of racing in Japan, and is part of the Super GT Series. The cars are heavily modified production cars that leave out a lot of the power upgrades for more aero and cornering abilities. Essentially, they set the horsepower cap at 300, but everything else you’d want to do to make the car corner is legal. This makes for a car that’s no longer agonizingly slow, and which can corner faster than you can think.

Just look at all the ducting and aero that goes into the car. Plus, the standard FA20 engine has been ripped out in favor of an EJ20 that puts down 300 horsepower. Plenty for a car that weighs just 2,300lbs.

Now if only Subaru and Toyota would build this for the road…
