Trying to trade in my 2006.5 BOP xB
Well last night i test drove the '08 xB in Blue at Ron Tonkin Scion in Portland, OR.
Got approved for the top financing bracket np
however, When it came time to trade in my 2006.5 BOP xB with 11,223 miles on it they offered me $11,000. I walked away.
No dings, no chips, no scratches, no scuffs, new tires, alloy wheels, autopage 2-way alarm system w/ remote start and driver paging, spoiler, TRD tail lights and tinted front windows.
This car falls into the excellent category on KBB.com, $14,275 and thats without the tail lights, alarm, remote start, spoiler, and tint being considered in the value of the car.
They tried to tell me thats what the car was worth and that KBB was wrong.
I'm majorly dissapointed right now. I bought my 06 from this same dealership and expected to be treated better as a returning customer. It looks like all car dealerships truly are the same.
If any dealers in the Portland/Vancouver area read this and would like to contact me, please post your information.
What have some of you guys gotten for trade-in on your car?

it was 16k when i bought it (automatic/wheels/tail lights). I've added desirable features to the car. It's got lower mileage then the average used xB.
If a dealer says they go by KBB value they shouldn't turn around and offer me ~$3k less then the value on KBB. I understand that the stuff i added is neglible.

Yes i understand that, as i already stated. BUT they are offering "FAIR CONDITION" payment. My car easily falls into excellent, but even if you wanted to go down a step, it would STILL be worth at least 2k more then they offered.
It's always debatable, of course, but the bottom line is they are trying to rip me off.

Well, that's what dealers are to do.. to get you into a new car, and to cover their costs, they would have give you $11k. They can probably turn around and sell it for $13k on their lots, but u'll get a new car, and they have to sell it..
For me, I was trying to sell my BOP 2006 manual with 15k miles a couple of months ago and got one person interested in looking at the car...
Trust me, $11k is pretty good considering how tough it will be sell it... just remember that your car will loose $2000 - $3000 immediately when it rolls off their lots...

Toyota is going to shaft you on the trade of the xB. I looked into trading my 2004 TCM xB with 16,000 miles on it for a 2003 Toyota Matrix. Not only did they have the Matrix 3,000 above KBB cost, they refused to give me anymore than 8K for my xB.
I wouldn't be so miffed except for two things:
1) I traded my PW '05 Manual xB for this '04 Auto xB at Welsh Subaru in Limerick PA, and they gave me $12.5 (full KBB value) in the trade
and
2) There's a history with Toyota and my family. We've literally purchased 30+ cars from them (all of them financed in my dad's name, even though respective family members were paying for them). We are (were?) on a first name basis with the manager, etc. etc. When I walked in, the first salesperson walked up to me and said 'you're familiar, do I know you?' (he was new) to which I responded, 'you've probably met me before, I'm ___'s son.'
What I've learned - brand loyalty means jack squat to Toyota, as far as I'm concerned. I walked into that *Subaru* dealership, and left in an hour with a new deal and a non-Subaru car. They had no reason to give me that great of deal.
And to top it off, the Matrix was DIRTY. As in, dog hair, cigarette stains, and dirty, used tissues!
All I can say is, my next car will be a Subaru...
/end rant
EDIT: This was Ardmore Scion/Toyota in PA. All the sales people were from Central City Toyota, in Philly (since CCT doesn't sell new cars anymore).

if you are interseted, i'll be willing to buy that spoiler from you and maybe the TRD (TYC?) taillights ..
but yeah, dealers are scammers.. I was in the market for the Fit (earlier this year) and got a trade in value of $10k - $11k , so that's about the same ballpark range...
btw, i'm about to write a big rant on a Toyota stealership in the bay area and send Scion a nasty letter...

That was through Royal Moore. But I don't know if they've got any more xB2s. They only got two, I took the black one home, and the TCM they got was being driven when I left.

Guys, Ive never seen a car dealership actually use KBB for trade in values...its either gonna be NADA or Galves...why does everyone think that 11K for a car that you pay 15K for new is so bad...take the wheels off and put stockers on and see if they will give you the same amount. You gotta also realize that you get a tax break so realistically your 11K just turned into 12K. What do you expect them to sell it for as a used car? They are gonna take in your car for 11K, then $500 automatically goes to the owner of the dealership(called a house charge) so now they are realistically owning the car for $11,500...figure they hafta add about 2-3k to the $11,500 for negotiating room...if you want the car certified, add another $500...so now your up to about 13-14.5K...again, brand new is $15,410. Not so bad when you break it down on paper. The dealership is there to make money, not lose money ya know? Im not by any means saying that you shouldnt go to other dealers regardless of where you bought it and see if others are willing to give you more on your trade. Try to find a dealer that has no gen 1 xB's...some people still want a first gen and the dealer may give you more than 11K because of the availability of a gen 1 nowadays
Good advice. The only thing is most used scions over here are listed up to 17k :O
They wont get that for it i know, but they are making a bit more on these since the demand is there but the production is not.

.........no way these people are on crack. I traded in my 05 xb in november, and they gave me $10k for it with 25k miles. The dealer paid 650 dollars in repairs, they turned around and sold it for 15500 to some unlucky buyer. The dealer even went as far to rip me off on my tc when I bought it. I asked for the pedastal spoiler, and floor mats which I did not know or was ever told that they were cleverly hiding in the trunk. The floor mats were clearly listed on the window sticker. I had also told them I needed 24 month loan instead after sitting there listening to this person who clearly needed money talk about the benefits of being able to finance 7k over five years which is just retarded. The papers stated a 60 month loan when I asked why the sales person did not understand the words that were coming out of my mouth they got really upset at me that they were going to have to redo the paper work like it was my fault! After all that trouble the dealer also added floor mats to the loan but no spoiler when the car ALREADY had floor mats which I did not know about! so yes these people are on crack and do need to attempt to get another job but they probably arent qualified to work anywhere.. well maybe tacobell ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and I still want my spoiler and second set of floor mats!

dude. you asked for a 24 month loan and got a 60?
that's priceless...I don't see how that's anyone's fault but your own.
Just do some homework before you buy and don't get into the monthly payment game.
In respects to the original thread, I've found most places offer what KBB lists as "fair" condition. I don't agree with it, but I have shopped my 2005 sierra around and I can't seem to find anyone offering more than the "fair" condition price. This is with a 2 year old truck with only 10,808 miles on it too.
In regards to simplyscion's post, what's I'm curious about is you say that delears don't use KBB, they use NADA...everytime I have used NADA...they always qoute a price even higher than KBB's best! What's up with that? I would love to know more or have some more insight on that...

uh...do you peeps know that dealerships are in the business to make money, not give you a deal./...dealerships make more money on trade-ins than new cars, becasue that same car will be resold with a couple more $K added ontot the sticker....I thought it was common knowledge that you will always get hosed on a trade in and you are ALWAYS better to sell it yourself
a car is a major purchase, do your homework

NADA stands for "notta chance you're getting that figure". NADA uses trade allowances, which include dealer moneys, addendum pricing, and rebate on top of the ACV (actual cash value). Let me demonstrate how it works:
Car that costs 20k, a dealer owns for a bout 18.8. Now, that's 1200 of gross profit, that can be used to pay you over ACV for your trade. Now, if said dealer has an addendum of 900, then that's an addittional 900 they can pay you for your ride. If the car has a 1000 rebate, then that's an additional 1000 they can pay you. If there is also 1000 in dealer money, then an additional 1000 bucks.
So, you've got a car that ACV's at 10, to trade in on this 20k car, a difference of 10k with 1200 gross for the dealer. If we combine everything above, we get a trade allowance of 14100, a trade difference of 5900, and you think you got a smoking deal. Fact of the matter is, there is nothing special about the deal, other than you were buying a turd car with a mess load of manufacturer sale money from a punk dealer that marks up every car on the lot an additional 900 bucks.
I could add 10,000 addendums to every car on the lot, and then advertise "Minimum $10,000 trade ins today! That's right, push pull or drag your sled in for a minimum of $10,000 for your car!" Big whoop.

your the retard that couldnt tell the difference from a 2 year loan to a 5 year loan...you deserve to be ripped off...and you got charged for the floormats twice?? Even bigger of a retard...if they charged you double for the car would you have not picked up on that either? Some people are soo shot its not even funny. And your gonna sit here and tell me I need to get a real job and some self respect? Ill tell you one thing, I probly have a lot more self respect than you do knowing that I didnt get hosed on the last car I bought cause I was able to bring simple math deductions to the table and realize that 36 months means...3 years of payments...not 72, or 60 months. Why would you even sign for the car once you saw that?

scionofpcfl thanks for the NADA explanation for the other guys...we dont even use NADA here, we use Galves which is a wholesale book(you probly knew that already though) It goes for the same thing with kbb, the dealer trade numbers are way off because you can just take money out of the front end of the car and add it to the trade making it a whole lot more appealing to the customer. Thats not a fair market value because it has been adjusted. I always say to my customers, whatever you saw on KBB, knock $1000-$1500 off and thats the real world number.
Also, back to that original statement made by the kid who cant count the difference between 24 and 60, that was a really naive thing you said. Do you honestly think that every car salesman is the same? I can tell you that 99% of my customers drive away happy and keep in contact with me on the regular, come up to the dealership to hang out cause we have a pool table, air hockey, fooseball, nintendo wii(newest addition)...its pretty much a 2000 sq ft game room for customer use. We do A LOT of referral business because if someone has a good experience, there gonna tell their friends and family and there gonna bring them to us...why? Cause we dont turn people upside down like most other dealers. Ive been here with Scion since the begginning, over 3 years and have a very wide customer base, not because I rip them off, but cause I make them happy and do the right thing when I can. So take that statement about "car salesman should get a real job and some self respect" and shove it...btw what kind of job do you have? Are you some sort of self made millionaire? Obviously not since your numbers game isnt your forte.
