View Full Version : shocks on doors *UPDATED Pics*
TheIcon 09-17-2004, 10:35 AM Well last nite I continued installing my lambo doors. Needless to say removing the fender was a MAJOR pain in the ___. Anyway I got the hinge attached to teh door and frame of the car. The lambo door hinge uses a shock. This is where my problem is. The shock doesn't move. So the door stays in one spot not going up nor down. I am not sure if there is a trick to making the shock work or if the shocks are just bad. I expected them to work like a screen door on a house. Any comments?

Yea it is definately on propperly. I can't even move the shock when it is off of the car. I can't get it to move up or down at all.
I put all my body weight practically on the shock and it didn't depress down. Im thinking something has to be wrong with it. Actually both of them. :(
TheIcon 09-17-2004, 01:15 PM Well I just called the guy that sold it to me and he said the weight of the door alone should work the shock. But I told him my case and he said he has never heard of that. So we shall see what happens.

Nah any kind of suggestion Im up for. I would hate to have to sent the parts back adn have them ship them to me again cause my car is in like 8000 pieces. lol. It doesn't look like there is a spot to let pressure out but I will check it out when i get home from work.
chucksu 09-17-2004, 03:57 PM Man that sucks. I think the shocks would be gas charged maybe. Is this kit built for the xB? If so then everything should work :?. If you dont need to pay for shipping again then its all good other then your car being in many pieces.

What do you mean by gas charged?
Yea it is for the XB. My only other prob I may run into is rubbing on my fender which I hope doesn't happen cause that will be a major fix. I wouldn't think i would need tp pay for shipping since they sent me faulty stuff. But I was hopping to have this done this weekend. Looks like my car might be outa commish for a week or so.
chucksu 09-17-2004, 04:48 PM Im not sure what kind of shocks they are. If they are made like car type they could be filled with any number of things other then just air. I was just saying that, as a reason why there might be no valve to release some pressure from it.

I would think the design of the shock for the door would be similar, just smaller because it does not need to hold as much weight. Sorry I cant help much.

It's a pressurized cylinder and it sounds like you have the wrong ones. Normally when they fail, they lose pressure and don't hold anything up, but yours sounds like the opposite. That is why I think they might have sent you the wrong one. These things are catagorized by length and pressure (how much pressure is inside). Alot ot these things are 50# and up and EXTREMELY difficult to compress w/o any leverage (being installed) so that would be why you couldn't compress it on your own.
Since (I'm assuming) this thing is going to be a show car, why don't you look into linear actuators? They're kinda spendy, but it would be hella cool to push a button and have the door go up on its own. 8)

Well I sent them back to the manufacturer because they said something is obviously wrong. They are going to ship me 2 new shocks. Hopefully be here Thursday and I can see if they work. (yes they are gas filled)
As far as using linear actuators. I want to do this :) For now I believe I am going to use the shocks though because the kit came with these shocks and I have to chill on my money spending for a few months :)

I haven't glassed my roof yet. I was actually thinking of doing that now since I have about 4 days before the shocks come in the mail. Since my car is already in 80982430592 pieces mide as well take the roof off to :)

l I got my 2 new shocks in teh mail today. The one works after tugging on it a bit. The other one is doing the same thing the previous 2 were where it is stuck in one spot. I don't know if it will start working after I work at it a bit or not. (Like it is stuck and just needs to get moving to loosen up)
Anyway I noticed someone in another post said they would give more credit to someone that put suicide doors on there car rather than lambo doors. Because lambo doors you can just bolt on with a kit. Well whoever said this OBVIOUSLY hasn't ever tried putting lambo doors on there XB. THIS IS NO EASY TASK. :x I have spent 10 hours so far. And only have one door on and it is not even finished completely.
As far as problems. What I am running into now is that the door is not flush. The front of the door sticks out about 1/4 of an inch. So when I put my fender back on it will be slightly noticable. I believe it can't sit flush because the hinge is obviously different. Also I am not sure if this will truely be noticeable to the common person or not. My g/f didn't even notice. Im not sure if there is a correction for this issue.

The seal is good. That was part of a discussion I had with a friend. It functions properly. But to anyone with a trained eye they will see that it is slightly off. To me its not a huge deal.
I should have some pictures by Saturday. Camera is recharging as we speak. :)

Ill get some pictures from the backside. I didn't even think to take a pic there. I might stand next to it so you get an idea of how wide it is.

Looks like duct tape to me. It's gonna be a pain in the a$$ getting the residue off the paint once he removes it :(

Its duct tape. i have removed it like 20 times already. Its not hard and there is actually very little residue surprisingly which just rubs off when I take my finger over it.

Actually if you use the one pic I have of the lambo hinge. If you either shimmy the right side of it out or if you bolt down the left side the door will go flush. For whatever reason in my head it does the opposite of what I think it would.
Yea I would love suicide doors on the back but I think I am taking a break after this project. I don't wanna touch a door for awhile :D
