View Full Version : Removed the backseat headrests
chewd0g 09-18-2004, 08:22 AM Am I the only one who did this?
I remember people commenting about visibility so the first thing I did was remove them and put them in my bedroom.
NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER...big clear rear view :)
hnefrdo 09-18-2004, 09:42 AM there is a down side to your solution. your backseat passengers may break their necks if yu have an accident. if yu don't carry passengers a lot, maybe yu can just fold down the seats; that way, the headrests are available when yu need them.
i keep my left seat folded down and keep the right headrest pushed all the way up and peek out from underneath it.
chewd0g 09-18-2004, 09:53 AM Makes sense and generally nobody rides with me, but at this point in time the left portion I can't bring down because the plastic part of the pin broke off and I can't pull it out enough to drop it.
It screws off I just have to get a new one for it :/
MSCOFF 09-18-2004, 10:35 AM with the head rests in, I couldn't get the drivres side seat back and far enough reclined for comfort. and my wife is real short and they affected her visibility. so I took them out
chucksu 09-18-2004, 11:29 AM :? & here I was just going to remove the center one. Now I need to get behind the wheel & see how bad the view is.
GloriousMidget 09-18-2004, 02:22 PM I took mine out and visibility is improved a little, but its worth the risk for the passengers IMO
Black_Cherry_xA 09-19-2004, 06:47 PM The one I test drove didn't have the backseat head rests. :D
I just keep the headrests in the trunk in case I ever do carry more then 1 passenger.
mikochu 09-19-2004, 07:11 PM When I have lots of cargo, I put the headrests under the driver/front passenger seats. Otherwise, I leave them on (don't know when I'll have passengers). I use my side mirrors, rearview, and I occasionally do the "look back."
Back_In_Black_xA 09-20-2004, 01:43 AM 10 minutes after I got my xA I took out the headrest. You can't see anything with them installed, visibility is much much better without them. I hardly ever have anyone ride with me so they better have strong necks I guess if they want a ride.

Thats a good point. Also about how much does all 3 weigh? I dont think that much but maybe just enough to do some good.

They are really light, like 1lb each.
I took mine out before I even drove off the dealer lot.
But...good news for all the xA guys. The TC rear headrests fit in our rear side ones. And the rear TC head rests look like our center one. So if you want something back there, then there is your option.
djct_watt 09-20-2004, 03:42 AM I thought about doing this for the longest time, but I eventually came to the conclusion that the xA is a very small car, and that the areas blocked by my headrests are adequately covered by a combination of the center hole and the the side view mirrors.
The tC headrests would be a great idea. . . and the car should come that way stock, but I have a feeling that they are going to be pricey. The headrests are annoying, but I don't feel that they are any sort of visibility risk.
TheScionicMan 09-20-2004, 04:45 AM If I recall correctly, the xB headrests were like over $200 bucks... can't imagine what they would charge for the high-luxury tC....
stellarhavoc 09-20-2004, 06:14 AM I never ride with my rear headrests... clear view in my huge 40cm (thats right ppl!) rear view mirror. THe funny thing is.. when i drive, i utilize 8 driving mirrors! The big rear view mirror, an attached bubble blindspot mirror for it, a rear view mirror for my passenger, the standard 2 external mirrors with lil blindspot mirrors attached, and theres a mirror attached to the bottom of my passenger side exterior mirror to let me see the curb when i park (so i can get in nice and tight :D ) hahahaha
But yah, staying on topic... i do leave the center passenger headrest there because its so short. SO when i roll with a 3rd person, they get to sit in the middle! :P
empleh 09-20-2004, 07:25 PM i took mine out, but leave them in the back. so that if someone does ride i can put it back in.

holy ____!
Do you have photos of all those mirrors?
the_drizzle 09-23-2004, 06:03 AM Yeah I second that. Photos of the "curb mirror" would be nice!
:D
bluexA 10-04-2004, 08:46 AM I have my rear seat headrests off -- except the middle. I keep 'em in the trunk. if a 3rd person is riding, I ask them where they want to sit - right or left, and I install that headrest.
Sometimes I know I'll have 2 passengers in back, so I put the headrests on before I start.
You might have to remove the headrests too if you want to fold the seats down flat - not sure about that.
bensonwrx 10-04-2004, 03:21 PM I too agreed about the headrest. The center one is okay though, so it was left in there while my wife drove off from the dealer's lot. She also put on a wide mirror, but not 40mm of course, rather 27mm. Good things are that she can see the rear quarter windows plus the mirror itself is anti-glare, so it's good for the eyes at night. Best of all, the mirror is cute like the xA :D
chewd0g 10-04-2004, 09:31 PM I WANNA SEE SOME PICTURES OF THESE MIRRORS!
MORE DETAILS TOO PLEASE, I MIGHT GO GET ONE!
bensonwrx 10-05-2004, 03:17 AM You mean the cute one my wife has, or the wide mirror in general? I can take some pics comparing with and without the mirror for you, but I won't be able to do so until later on this week. Let me know :)
Here is a sample of the Broadway mirror, which is VERY popular:

whoooops sorry.. i havnt checked this thread in awhile.. Click and SEE!
You can see 6 of the 8 mirrors in this pic. The other 2 are the drivers side exterior w/its lil blindspot mirror.
You can even see me in the bubble mirror! LOL
iglcrair 10-05-2004, 05:19 AM Visibility shmisibility... the key is to go so fast that you leave everyone behind and nobody is anywhere near passing you or close to you.
bensonwrx 10-05-2004, 05:22 AM you meant go so fast driving the xA/xB or some other *sport* cars? ;)
moaiD 10-05-2004, 06:20 AM i havent tried this but maybe can pot the 2 front headrest on drivers and passenger and replaced them with the rear ones.... i believe the front ones are shorter compared to the rear ones... so the front can have the taller rear headrest... i think can get a slightly better view without compromising safety for passengers...
hey guys at least u have a head support for the center rear passenger.... we dont have it in our ists....
bensonwrx 10-05-2004, 06:26 AM IST is always better for me...at least I don't have to go all out to get the look conversion from xA to iST for my wifey ;)
moaiD 10-05-2004, 09:26 AM the grass always greener over the other side eh.... some of us here wanna transform ist to xA... me for example... :D

all you have to worry about is flashing lights from police car following you
but im sure youll see it on your side mirrors
sralmas 10-05-2004, 01:29 PM I took mine out and visibility is improved a little, but its worth the risk for the passengers IMO
Just be careful becuase, in the event of an accident, you might be looking at *significant* liability (and perhaps a disclaimer of coverage from your insurance carrier) for serious injuries sustained by your passenger based upon your removal of the headrests.
cynosurexB 10-05-2004, 02:59 PM I added TC rear-headrests to my xB which eliminated the blindspots. It looks great when they're lowered and it's there for passengers.
I think the tan-colored TOYOTA PRIUS ones fit also. Probably the Camry too.
Darryl
bensonwrx 10-06-2004, 04:28 AM And do you happen to know how much will they cost?
cynosurexB 10-06-2004, 07:37 AM The TC ones will be costly. I asked around first but when the TC came out, the headrest weren't even in the computer yet. I called 10 dealerships and they each quoted me about he same. Roughly 340.00 retail. OUCH huh? Don't worry, i didn't get them for that much anyways. Ask for a parts manager and bargain with each of them. You may even get more than $100.00 off retail.
One better note: See if there are any wrecked TC's in your area, or just choose another Toyota. It should fit the xA as well. I went to Longo, since people know me there, and did a headrest swap from Camry's to the Prius. Some people thought i was crazy, but i am a trendsetter and not a follower. Though, the black TC headrests do match all xB interiors and they look great too.
Peace
bensonwrx 10-06-2004, 07:51 AM Hmmm, sounds expensive indeed. Oh well, all of my wife's guests just have to walk home from now on then.
