OK we have all paged through are owner's manual before (except those who post about "blue light at startup").....

But have you you REALLY read it? Well today I was board and decided to read my xB's owner's manual cover to cover (including all the lame warning labels).

When I first got my xB, I read though the obvious stuff but never paged through the section of door locks and mirrors ( I mean who needs to be told how to adjsut the mirrors?)......Well When reading how to "adjust the mirrors" thier is a side note that the mirrors are actually heated!!!

They are activated when the rear defrosted is activated like on other Toyota's..... My question to everyone is this:

How come when you read scion specs and thier literature- they mention nothing of this?

I know to Californians heated mirrors mean nothing ( that and the rear wiper) but In My neck of the woods the mirrors and the wipers make my morning commutes a little better between now ( Its currently 34 degrees out) and march...

Anyways- anyone else discoved something new abouot thier Scion they didnt know before???

 The 1 way to make sure if your mirros are heated is go look at them. Most heated mirrors have that little defrost heat wave logo thing some where on the face. If you dont see that maybe its a miss print from something the bB has but not the xB? This is the first I have heared of heated mirrors on a car if this price group.

dunno bout the xB, but my xA definitely doesn't have heated mirrors. They've been fogged up pretty bad, and the rear defroster button didn't so squat for em. . .
I also wished we had automatic rear defrosters (turn off after a specific time interval to reduce power drain, which is huge, and avoid damaging the wires).

are you sure about that i figure that would be a point that the dealership would make when you bought the car( u know something to bump up the price  i thnk you need to double check that one

chucksu: You are right about some cars with the insignia on the mirrors, however, Ive only seen this on Fords. Toyota's on the other hand dont have this . My mom's camry, as well as fathers 4Runner have heated mirrors, but only mentions it in the owners manual ( I just went out and checked)

And for anyone eles that has doughts- open up your owners manual to page 72 AND READ. BTW Mine is a 2005, so the pages may be off a little for you 2004's....

And i quote "to defog or defrost the rear window AND OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR, push the switch...the thin heater wires on the inside of the rear window and the heater panels on the outside mirrors quickly clear the surface"

People post questions not because they do or did not read the manual, it might just have been to get further explination. No harm in doing that.

:?: This is still a little odd. Even the scion web site does not list it. They just have the rear defogger listed but nothing about heated mirrors. Guess some one needs to test this bad boy out & see if it is or not.

I have the 2005 TCM xB and an owners manual that states 2005 on the cover. My rear defroster is covered on page 74, and says nothing about the outside mirrors. It goes on to give a warning about not leaving the defroster on too long, as wire damage and battery discharge will occur.

Me thinks you have a mis-printed owners manual on your hands.

Yeah, was pretty friggin cold on in CA too. . . it actually RAINED a few days ago, here in Sac, had tons of rain, and my street was even flooded in a few inches of water. . . a few cars broke down from water intake to boot!

But on my xA, I'll have to check my manual. I got an 05 too, and I've had a few Toyota's with mirror defrosters/timers.

I thought the whole climate control unit was the same on the xA as the xB. . . go figure. On the xA, the defroster button is not the timer kind, but rather the on/off kind. . . like the AC. You can feel the click, and the button is sunken in when you power it on. On my Corolla, the timed defroster's button was also a push on/off, but the button didn't "stick" like the AC, meaning that it just signals the defroster to turn on, and it turns itself off. A little status LED shows if it is on or off. I'm not sure I explained that very well or not. . . but my mirrors definitely do not have defrosters. I'll have to check the manual.

What about the Interiror side Heater vents. Maybe they mean those. I Know that when you have your heater on and you have it on the floor setting the heat will blow through those. But i also know that that is to defrost the side windows. too bad.. i have an 04. Hey someone should ask the Guy on scion.com in the Chat window.

If it seems like its cold tonight & you dont keep your box in a garage, put some water on the mirrors & see if it will freeze for morning time. Thats about the only thing I can think of that just might be the fastest way to figure this out.

It may say it in the manual, but heavy dew in the morning and the outside mirrors didn't defrost or even get warm. Just the back glass om my 04 Xb

My outside mirrors were fogged up this morning. I hit the defrost button and waited a couple of minutes and nothing happened. The mirrors stayed fogged up. In my 93' MX6 the mirrors were heated and would start clearing up in about 30 seconds. I have yet to read my manual, but I am guessing the rear view mirrors are not heated. Would have been nice if they were. Maybe there is a way to get them to work if they are equiped.

Yeah i was told they have heated mirrors also.... When it was colder back in march i did notice that my mirrors would clear up faster than other windows when i used the defrost.

Having taken the xB side mirror apart to replace the glass that was broken
I can tell you for certain that they are NOT HEATED.

Must be a typo in the manual.

Sid_xBicious
09-21-2004, 05:19 PM
well, if this gives any help, I took off my mirrors few months ago and it only have 3 wires. I'm assuming 1 wire is common, the 2 wires is for R/L power for the motor. no wires for heat. hope this is clear.

I also read something in the manual...

The xB's with automatics can use the "overdrive button"
to downshift the car on steep inclines for engine braking.

What do you make of this?

I checked my manual for my 04 xB and it does state about mirror defoggers. There is a cuation about touching the mirrors becuase they could be hot to the touch. Put my hand on the mirror and felt it get warmer from the bottom up, after I switched the rear defrost on. So yes they are heated and they do work.

I just got an 05 xB and my manual also says heated mirrors with a 15 minute delay, I'll check tomorrow and see if they get warm since it's starting to get cold in the mornings here.

For those of you who don't know, there are misprints in the literature from Scion and there are features that are not documented. Read and check out your own car! This forum is the best for info, but don't believe everything you read.

Ya, thats why I quit replying! I didnt want this thread turn into the one about tC's heater knob not being real aluminum- basically its the same principle- the wrong type of publication came out and people thought some was unique about the car- and it turns OUT TO BE A TYPO!!!

OOOOPPPPS!!!!

O well- what do you expect- I can only imagine how difficult it would be to launch a brand new car brand (IE Scion!)

I read someware that the Bb's have the option of power folding mirrors- are these heated?
