View Full Version : TRD Springs... ScionSean 05-27-2007, 06:37 AM I'm sorry if this has already been covered before, i just didn't see a topic covering in specifically in the search. Can I safely run TRD springs on stock shocks? Thanks in afvance. Nick06tC 05-27-2007, 06:41 AM They can be run, but there is talks of blown struts because of it. How long has been debated, but i have friends at 20,000 mile and running strong. JOEinSD 05-27-2007, 07:49 AM I've been running Progress springs, which are a lower drop than TRDs, for over 15k with no problems. ixamxkevin 05-27-2007, 08:12 AM I was also debating between TRD springs + Stock shocks or TRD springs + TRD shocks. TRD springs + TRD shocks was well worth it. MY car rides so much nicer now...u won't regret it! engifineer 05-27-2007, 04:41 PM I have been running TRD springs on stock struts for about 25000 miles now. Struts are just fine. SciontCya 05-27-2007, 05:08 PM I have been running TRD springs on stock struts for about 25000 miles now. Struts are just fine. Do you have pix of the tC with the TRDs? I'd like to see the drop on it - I'm looking to do the same thing. thanks, Scott engifineer 05-27-2007, 05:15 PM A pic a couple of weeks after getting them: http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/1406-2/c6.JPG (http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/1404-1/c6.JPG) Another the same day http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/1409-2/c7.JPG (http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/1407-1/c7.JPG) And another... well, really just showing them at work :P http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/999-4/510089533_607ea5bc5f_b.jpg (http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/997-1/510089533_607ea5bc5f_b.jpg) Hyghgynx 05-27-2007, 05:27 PM You should be fine. As long as the mechanic/person who installs your TRD Springs knows what they're doing, there should be no trouble. Eventually, you'll need to replace the shocks/struts though. SciontCya; Lower it! You won't regret it. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c133/Hyghgynx/DSC01240.jpg Thought I would throw this up to entice you. :lalala: :P 3min3m2 05-27-2007, 09:38 PM dude....the tc struts are pretty strong-i just dropped mine wit the TRD springs, it feels like the car was meant for those springs... your struts should last at least 30-40k, they are pretty stiff as it is... paul34 05-28-2007, 12:10 AM Since Toyota doesn't require you to buy the struts along with the springs, I don't think its a stretch to say the struts should be able to last AT LEAST 36,000 miles with the TRD springs. Of course, it might fail before as well... in which case of course you would not be able to get it replaced under warranty (I think...). paul34 05-28-2007, 12:12 AM A pic a couple of weeks after getting them: And another... well, really just showing them at work :P http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/999-4/510089533_607ea5bc5f_b.jpg (http://scionpix.com/gallery/download/997-1/510089533_607ea5bc5f_b.jpg) 3-wheeling!  :D rolloutrs1 05-28-2007, 02:13 AM if i were you, i would get the springs with the shocks and struts. get it installed at the same time. you'd end up saving in the future. moneypit 05-28-2007, 03:49 AM I just had my car serviced for some warranty stuff and the airbag recall and was informed that I have a blown strut with about 15000 miles on trd springs with stock struts. I thought the stockers would last longer than that, but that said, they won't relace the strut under warranty. SciontCya 05-28-2007, 04:14 AM Thanks guys - I'm going to do it for sure - just have to figure out what springs now. I've got the 18x8s, so I don't want to rub... Scott engifineer 05-28-2007, 04:14 PM I just had my car serviced for some warranty stuff and the airbag recall and was informed that I have a blown strut with about 15000 miles on trd springs with stock struts. I thought the stockers would last longer than that, but that said, they won't relace the strut under warranty. They will last ages longer than that. Did you feel any symptoms of a blown strut.. or did they just talk you into work you didnt need? amanda776 05-28-2007, 04:35 PM I would also assume that you'd have to factor in the road conditions in your area and how hard you beat on the car. engifineer 05-28-2007, 04:57 PM That is true, but I would be very leary of letting them charge me to replace a strut that soon if I didnt feel the symptoms myself. Not saying it couldnt happen, but I would want to see the strut leaking or feel that the strut was bad while driving. I have run stock struts on cars for well past 50,000 miles before, even driving dirt roads some of the time. moneypit 05-28-2007, 10:43 PM I didn't have them do anything. I'm definately gonna get a second opinion. I've yet to pull anything apart to check for myself, and I haven't noticed a problem but all I've done is bounce on each corner to check for damping. That said, they told me that they flat out won't warranty the so-called bad strut because it's not matched to the spring. Also cuz I did the work myself. I'm just pointing out that fact. All the same, I'll probably get the trd struts anyways. The only reason I didn't put them in to start was because of funds. ack154 05-28-2007, 10:49 PM Ya, that wouldn't be covered under warranty, but it would be a good time for an upgrade if that's really the case. Sounds like he's pulling your leg. I've had Hotchkis springs on stock shocks/struts for about 30k now with zero issues. Of course, I'd really like to go with TRD struts or a set of coilovers - but don't have the $$ yet, like most people. :) |
