I actually did this like a week ago. It was fairly easy. You do have to yank the mirror glass off to release the the tabs that hold the mirror cover on, but its not bad.

I suppose you guys want pics huh???

Randode,

I LOVE your mods. You keep things so dang simple but they look SOOO good. You make mods easier for the rest of us.

I ordered a couple things from your website (chrome engine cover overlays and light grey visor warning label covers) for my new xB.

Keep up the great work!

Randy, can you explain and/or show more. I really want to do this, but need a little more help....
pop the mirror glass off.
the mirror cover is clipped on, so use a srewdiver to pop the tabe loose from inside the mirror.
remove the screws that hold the turn signal to the mirror.
unclip the led part from the clear part of the turn signal.
lift out the board.
remove the leds, and replace with the color of your choice.
I used white 5mm leds. They are too tall to fit, so i belt sanded the tips down a little.
also, the old leds are the 4 pin type, i used regular 2 pin leds, and installed them diagonally in the holes on the board.

Its held on by adhesive and some clips.
Grab the bottom and peel the glass and the black piece behind it out about 45 degrees.
Once the adhesive has let go. pull down on the glass to release the top.
Now you can release the clips that hold the mirror cover on.
Remove the led lens assembly. take that sucker apart, and mod it.

I have removed the covers without removing the glass. You just need to move the glass to one side and you will see the cover clip, just pop that out and the cover just pulls right off. Took me about 30 seconds.

Whispaz

I've been pulling and I feel like its going to break. I dont get it

lastlookcustoms

pull harder....

Once you pop off the one clip that you can see behind the mirror glass, they pull right off...

Whispaz
07-16-2007, 03:57 PM
is it in the middle?
I know there is something in the middle that i can see holding it. I think i'm stressing it too much though becuase i can see it turning white and cracking..... unless thats the adhesive. Is the adhesive black like silicone or like tape?

lastlookcustoms
07-16-2007, 06:42 PM
are you pulling on the cover or the glass? Obviously you want to keep your hands close to where you are pulling. The less stress you put on it the better. What I did was remove the mirror from the car, move the glass inward and you can look in and see a single tab. Use a screwdriver ( I used a paint mixing stick) to pop the clip. The cover will pop up slightly. YOu can then slide your hand in there and pull the cover off. It literally took about 20 seconds per mirror to get the cover off...

If you want to joyride to CT, I can pop them off for ya.

Whispaz
07-16-2007, 07:19 PM

lastlookcustoms

The clip is easy to see. Look at the inside. It will be the same color as the outside of the car. Maybe your best bet is removing the whole glass then..

Here's a good source for LEDs. Fair price and fast shipping:
http://www.lsdiodes.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4

And yes, polarity matters. Also, different color LED have different drive voltages. Some exploration will teach you a lot about properly changing colors by using the right resistors as well.

Here is in part what ricetoaster has explained to me.. Hope this will help some folks out...
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1188285/mirrortab1.jpg
""This is the bottom one, push it out first because it's easier and can give a little light to see the other one better. This one you can just push forward and it should pop out. You're gonna need something pretty thin and long to fit back there... a regular small flat head screwdriver should work (not the ones with switchable heads though because the shaft is too big). Also, my tab is silver because my xB is silver... so what ever color your xB is will be the color of the tab. ""
AND

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1188285/mirrortab2.jpg
The second tab is about two inches above the other but it's different. You cant even really see the tab but you will see the black/gray plastic piece that the tab is behind. I got this one out by moving the mirror down and right as far as it would go and then pushing the screwdriver behind the mirror from the top and pushing left behind the black/grey plastic piece (note the red line in the image).

Once you get those tabs off,... there are more tabs along the bottom but they will pop out. There are two more on the right side of the mirror that can be worked out by pulling but take it easy because the plastic is cheap. """

Can you post us a good picture of the board too? I might be able to see the circuit and the resistor to figure out the right values for the other colors.

There are two variables to play with on the LEDs: one, brightness (DUH) and two, light angle.

Also, what colors are illegal? If I remember my youth well enough, you cannot have red lights on the front of your car and not sure about green. I think yellow, blue, and white are legal colors for front facing car lights.

GREAT PIX! Thanks... but unfortunately they buried 2 resistors under the white plastic which does need to be removed for replacing the LEDs. The main resistor (R3) is 43 ohms. D1 is a diode that protects the LEDs in case it is plugged in backwards and may also be a zener that limits voltage to a specified value. regardless, a diode does drop about 1/2 to 1 volt.

I like the suggestion of going wht/blu/wht especially if the blue is somewhat subdued from the whites (may half the lumens).

The reason you'd want to optimize the resistors and the circuit is to make sure you are not stressing the LEDs (short life) and to get the maximum brightness out of the lights you can get. Personally, I find the mirror blinkers quite distracting so cutting back on max brightness and using narrow angle lights would appeal to me very much.

Anyway, a pic with the plastic removed would bring us one step closer to understanding the circuit and making further recommendations.

Thanks again!

ok now here's the question.. Should we go with exact replacements..??? or should we go with the 2 posted ones that we sand down to fit insite?? Now just for kicks.. I got some & tested sanding one of them down about an eight inch... it now has a flat top on it instead of a 'nipple' head.. & the beam that shoots out the front of it is now washed out & wider & less bright comming foward.. than an un -sanded one....
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1188285/DSCF0551.JPG

Now Personally, I want to go with a white/blue/white & keep it bright!
I feel the white will off set the blue & give me a bright but subtle appearance...
What do you suggest now???

ok I found a guy ( Ultimate Electronics Installer) who is swapping out my LEDs Monday. He turned me onto his LED.s that they look just like the one that I sanded down, but only with a nice & clear foward beam instead of my sanded down opaque prototype. side by side they are just as tall as the stockers & just as FAT as the 2 posters.. only stubbys!!, real bright too! I am going with wht/blu/wht & AM NOT gonna worry about being pulled over by Johnny Lawman. I am confident that it will have the appearance of the High Intensity headlights that you see out there with a slight blue glow.
I will take pics of the finished soldering before I put it all back together. I post it all when done... Thanks for hanging in there with my guys... This ought to look tit!!!...jh..
ps..... Now what to do with the left over amber stock LED's????
I am considering glueing them inside of the grill... 3 on each side... facing out... in a > pattern on the drivers side & a < pattern on the passenger side.. & wiring them to the turn sigs... .hhhhmmmmmmmmm ambers in front hidden within the grill..... hhhmmmmm. mabey............
see if you'se can talk me out of it!! ha ha ha . thanks for reading!!!.. jh

Thanks for the new pix. The LEDs are indeed in series and the total value of the resistors is 129 ohms. The real trick as I said was to match the voltages. Turns out the blue and white are the same, ~3v (3.3 nominal) forward bias voltage and the amber is only ~1.8v (2.1 nominal). This means that if they light up they will not put out full lumens. In this case, the replacement of 3 ambers with 1 wht and 1 blu would be equivalent as far as the circuit goes. (3x2.1=6.3V and 2 x 3.3=6.6V). This would be easy to do by jumpering across the center LED.

Next consideration is the design of the lens. Not the LED lens, but the fact that the mirror lens is a lightpipe. You want to make sure that the angle of the light entering the "lightpipe" which is what the lens is, is as close to matched to the original LEDs as possible.

Dull lens vs clear lens... yes, it will make a difference in brightness. I would definitely opt for a clear lens on the LED since you are projecting a beam into a lightpipe. You can get a clear lens back with careful use of a small flame torch so you can carefully remelt the plastic to a shiny clear surface. You can also burn up the element inside the LED so test it before installing it.

wow Kilo. sorry to hear that you cannot get your mirror cover back on..... I 'snapped' mine back on.. just try your best to line up the 'claw' hooks in the cover with the holes in the mirror housing.. & then rock & push gently.. it will snap back in.. now I have my light tubes still out as i will pick up my led boards soldered up tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest// BUT in the meantime,. I stuck Blue painters tape over the gaping holes to keep out the rain till then........ good luck....
Mr Ricetoaster is making up a DYI on this.. Let's hope that he included pictures on 'How to" snap your covers back on... lol. just remember...
WHEN you put them back on..... you'll just have to take them back off agian when your bulbs arrive & you complete your soldering swap..... It may just be easier for you to leave them off till you're ready........
good luck agian.. jh

my soldering guy says that he will wet a Q-Tip & then melt the solder at the stock leds one at a time & using the wet Q-Tip, wipe the solder away from the post.. then move on to the next one.... You may want to try that tenique..... good luck.. let us know what & how you make out with what ever you try... jh

Glad you like it man!! Was fun taking apart the new xB for the first time. Lol. We'll get the rest done very soon. :D

To answer some questions for Whispaz, we (me doing the swap for Whispaz) used white replacement "4 posters" for the side mirrors. Specifcally, they were white Superflux 4-chip LEDs bought from Oznium (http://www.oznium.com/four-chip-led). They are a little bigger than the stock ones but they fit fine. Also, because they're bigger it makes them CRAZY bright in comparison to the stock ones! Using the desoldering tool techniquie mentioned above and some patience, it's a pretty easy and effective mod to do. Good luck everybody!

powerofSHN, lsdiodes sells the exact match to the originals and they are a lot cheaper. And actually the 11k are brighter than the ones oznium offers and only 90 cents a piece. Just a tip if you need more, I was going to buy from oznium and someone here pointed me to lsdiodes.

Oh ok nice, thanks for the info. I know Super Bright LEDs also sells the same ones. I didn't see the actual LEDs in the side mirrors until last night, and I must not have noticed the difference in the pics posted here before I ordered from Oznium. Last night worked out well, and that's what I was concerned about. Going forward, I now know where to go for true replacement! Thanks again!!

There are three ways to desolder and alternative:
1: Desoldering tool (already posted)
2: Solder Sucker (Spring loaded plunger tool)
3: Solder Wick (Flux coated copper braid)
and 4... cut the leads on the LEDs and remove each pin individually with the soldering iron.

These are single sided board so you have to be careful not to peal the circuit traces on the solder side. With the wires cut from the LEDs, the wires should almost fall out with the touch of an soldering iron. Soldering the LEDs back in is easy. Make sure the soldering iron touches both the LED lead and the circuit pad and feed a little solder and remove the soldering iron. You should end up with a nice shiny and well filleted solderjoint. Be careful not to get to much heat into the LED because it can blow it. Test the board before putting everything back together in the mirror.
MCD is the brightness rating (MilliCandle...something) higher numbers are brighter.

This mod isn't really that hard...

this is the desoldering iron (found at radioshack)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/sabadie31/DSC00707.jpg

This is an image of removing the solder... squeeze the bulb (over a wet towel or rag) than put the tip on the solder. After 2-3 seconds the solder melts, let go of the bulb and it should suck up the solder. Squeeze the bulb over the towel to shoot out the solder... next one.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/sabadie31/DSC00706.jpg

This is a video of soldering the new LEDs. Use a 15 watt soldering iron (also found at radioshack).
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/sabadie31/th_9d159064.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/sabadie31/?action=view&current=9d159064.pbr)

^^^ It really is that easy. Nice work!! For a few bucks, anybody can do this mod. :D

Ricetoaster
08-17-2007, 08:03 PM
Also, just as some precautions.

At the radioshack in town here they only had a 45 watt desoldering iron: It gets really hot so you may want to let the circuit board cool for a minute after removing each LED. I switched back in forth between each board so they didn't get too hot.

Even though the 15 watt soldering iron won't heat up the board too much, after soldering the new LEDs on, let the circuit boards cool off for a couple minutes before putting it back together in the casing.

the superflux were used in the side mirrors, license plate lights were just (4) 5mm 194 bulbs (ebay), and the reverse light was a hyper white 7440 bulbs

xbbox
08-23-2007, 06:18 PM
Is that what our bulbs are back there? Four 194's for the plate and a 7440 for the reverse? Someone needs to make a stickey with our bulb sizes.

Whispaz
08-23-2007, 06:34 PM
they are just 2 194s for the revers lights. i got the LED wedge bulbs that each contained 4 white LEDs. I'd recommend maybe getting the 6 LED bulb. the 4 isnt too bright, There is a stickied thread w/ the sizes. Its called "the end all sticky" in the ICE and Interior section

i connected them diagonlly but i also dont know if they are reversable... so idk which side goes bottom left and what side goes top right.

last question! so i get that it needs to be soddered diagonally into the 2 holes that ill have to play around with to figure out which one is pos neg blah blah but with the other 2 holes im not using.... should they be soddered shut or shuuld they have a hole through them.
?

hopefully ill get it to work i have a full led conversion with the rest of my lights and the double click blinker :)

jimmbomb
02-12-2008, 01:01 AM
Yeah just reverse the led & it should work.. All leds are + - sensitive.. you wont hurt it by soldering it on backwards... just wont work that all.... reverse it & try it...
DJ.. I finally got around to switchin out ALL mine to 5mm S-Flux's from Ozinum! These suckers are bright as spot lights now!!!..

Zsanz.... if you back up one page here to page 7

http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=177833&postdays=0&postorder=asc&&start=120

My last post on the bottom of the page shows pictures of the board with a 2 legged LED in the center..
Those pictures will show you which holes to use IF you are using 2 legged LEDS...
& remember if it wont work one way, then turn it around....
ONE MORE THING..... I used a 9 vt battery to test with at the kitchen table... kept me from running outside after every bulb.. test it with a 9 volt.. touch the 2 big silver tabs.. if it dont light up, then turn the battery around.. remember + - sensitive... good luck... jh
