View Full Version : WTF????? Is the xB for old folk???
bBlover 09-22-2004, 01:28 AM Today I saw this old lady driving a TCM xB and it had a loud muffler I was like WTF? Then I thought about it.... It must be the TRD Sport Muffler. Here license plate frame said Long Beach BMW. I was saying what did that person do? Trade it in for a BMW 760Li???? I just walked away laughing. I am starting to think that there are more older people driving xBs then us youngns. NO OFFENSE TO THE OLDER HERE ON SCION LIFE!!!!!
wingshelpmefly 09-22-2004, 01:45 AM im running into the same problem!!!! all the people who drive XBs around here (Cincinnati) are OLD OLD.... Im all like excited to see an XB and then I catch up with them and it's some like 60 year old guy or dude. But yea no offense to the people on here, I'm talking about the old people who have no idea that they're driving a Scion.
Placebo 09-22-2004, 01:49 AM How old are you?
Yes old people drive xBs and young people drive xBs. Back in the days I was upset thinking the xB was not cool because some 30+ people drive it with kidz but now with 2006 just around the corner I see all these cool cars coming to America and thats because of the sale of the xBs. So I say let the old farts drive it I mean they drive Civics and Focus's and those are youth oriented cars. Think of it this way the more xBs sold the less SUVs on the road.
naoki 09-22-2004, 01:51 AM Kenshi, I know we were talkin about the Smart before, but what other "cool" vechicles are you looking forward to in the near future?
Placebo 09-22-2004, 03:16 AM nissan cube, march, sentra, and moco. Suzuki swift and Mazada micro
Edit: and Honda fit, Misitsubishi Colt.
Aquakeeper 09-22-2004, 04:20 AM I'd say theres a even mix of people who drive the xB....
I've run into 5 people with xBs so far and they have all been over 30. Just wave and say hey...can't hurt to be friendly.
UnFocused 09-22-2004, 04:33 AM Look at new Civic owners- They are all "old" Same thing with Focus too.....
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 09-22-2004, 08:38 AM Damn, I'm almost 40. I must be so old, I'm a stale fart.
Hey, just because I'm almost 40 doesn't mean nothing. For instance, I haven't worn pants in over 3 years...
Why? 'Cause I always wear shorts. I have over 35 pairs of Chucks. I don't own a suit. I have no ties. I wear T-Shirts every day.
I dunno. I just think the xB is a cool car, that is not normal. Which is the way I like it.
Can't we old farts like cool cars?
peestandingup 09-22-2004, 10:25 AM ha ha. Hey, we are all getting older. I think I would still think the xB is cool when im over 40. Age aient got nuttin to do with it. Either your cool or not Period.
elwood58 09-22-2004, 02:02 PM My wife and I are both 46! A good value is a good value. We added a whole list of goodies, and like the fact that we can take a couple of friends along and not be all cramped.
The xB is the coolest station wagon to hit the road in decades. Not since the 1957 Chevy Nomad has there been a wagon with this much style and potential.
Enjoy!
Tuning69 09-22-2004, 02:11 PM I saw a 60 year old lady driving around in a TCM round here and I was like WTf.... Yea.. .still get questions bout the car though :D :D
Kimber 09-22-2004, 02:16 PM I agree that the xB is just a cool, unique car...something different. I have had more fun in this car than any other car I've ever owned and I'm 40+. I have a smile on my face every time I jump in it and take off...age has nothing to do with it...the person behind the wheel does. Male, female, young, old...Let's all enjoy! Kimber
bdonscion 09-22-2004, 02:20 PM I know what you mean. I sold one to an 80+ Year old couple 2 weeks ago. They came in looking at something else and fell in love with the xB!
projxB 09-22-2004, 03:12 PM i've seen more senior citizens driving scions recently then anything, mostly xBs. i think its great. i'll try to wave at them if they are paying attention but usually they're not, but if they do see me wave or say hi, they usually give me weird looks. i guess im just a punk kid to them.
sorry, i couldnt help but post this, its perfect for the topic.
http://www.patrickarena.com/sciondemographic.jpg
hotbox05 09-22-2004, 04:15 PM yeah i'm kinda dissapointed i mean it's totally cool but.... it's meant for younger buyers and even at scion meets n such it's predominantly 30+ just sucks cuz its harder to relate . and yeah since i have exhaust whenever i do see older folk in a scion they look at me like i just took a huge dose of crack. whatever i'll live they did the same thing with my supra and man oh man did they do it when i had my bimmer they hated seeing a tuned bmw i'll tell ya what
Old_Punk 09-22-2004, 04:35 PM Don't you know it's a conspiracy by us old farts to spoil your fun?
hotbox05 09-22-2004, 09:28 PM who's being insecure. more than anything i suppose it is just weird
Kool_B 09-22-2004, 09:51 PM So who's old, I'm 53 and yes ... surprize I own a Polar White xB, I know people that are half my age and act as if they are twice my age, I belong to a Club and associate with many younger people all of the time. I guess the only difference is my Mommy don't buy my toys, My B is getting pretty well fixed up and it is looking pretty good but still have a lot of mods to do. Gee I hope I don't die of old age before it's done.
8)
hotbox05 09-22-2004, 09:56 PM id hate me and people like me if they all got their cars from their mommies. i pay all my self unfortunetly but hell yeah it feels good workin my ___ off for a car. . no dsirespect to older scionetics but it's just odd is all
naoki 09-22-2004, 09:56 PM Besides, I read that turning 55 is the new turning 30. "Young" and "old" will get different meanings as time passes.
For a person born today, the life expectancy is 120. So if you're considered "old" at 60 and you don't die for another 60 years, what else do you have to look forward to? Except a whole lot more years of retirement bliss!
the_saint 09-22-2004, 10:01 PM For a person born today, the life expectancy is 120. So if you're considered "old" at 60 and you don't die for another 60 years, what else do you have to look forward to? Except a whole lot more years of retirement bliss!
They'd better start saving for their retirement TODAY!!
bBlover 09-22-2004, 10:39 PM I ain't sayin if your 50 and over you're old. I am just sayin that I see a lot more older people driving xBs. CUT ME SOME SLACK!!!!!!! :|
darrek 09-22-2004, 11:10 PM I'm 43 and I know the target demographic is much younger for the xB but for the price what else could I get? Maybe a Civic, Corolla, xA, Focus or maybe some kind of Kia :? or a Hyundai? The car is a steal, it's a nice size for urban driving and parking (I live in Chicago) and there's tons of cargo space. An Element would have cost almost 20K by the time I would have added in the packages to get a CD player and AC. The extra power and better cargo area weren't enough for me to pay 3 or 4,000 more.
Expect to see a lot more old farts driving xBs. It's one of those rare things that's both hip and practical. :D
naoki 09-23-2004, 12:05 AM I ain't sayin if your 50 and over you're old. I am just sayin that I see a lot more older people driving xBs. CUT ME SOME SLACK!!!!!!! :|
Yes yes yes, I DO agree with you that there are a lot of "older" people driving xBs.
To more accurately and more politically correctly analyze what "old" is in the way I think you mean, I've created the "boob principle". We are refering to those who, if you considered only women, would be people who have had boobs for longer than 20 years. Considering puberty for girls can start at a time between age 10 and into the upper teens, thats a bit of leway to avoid offending anyone in particular
I have heard reports that Toyota/Scion has been able to lower the target market for new car buyers, compared to other companies... for instance Scion being at around 37 for an average age compared to an industry average 45 (just as an example).
sandiegoscion 09-23-2004, 12:26 AM I have sold close to 30 xB's and I have to say the only trend I noticed is that all the people (aged 16 to 86) were all cool nice hip people. The old lady who was 86 bought the hot lava and she liked the bazooka tube, and what was she jamming? Oh yes it was swing music, all 6 discs of it! But she was happy! I think the average age for our store is 23 if I did the math but the older customers were just as interested in customizing and going to meets. I say age is just a number! (side note: in La Jolla, CA there are a lot of xA's as second/third cars, and that is fine but not as exciting) If the AARP, Depends, and Wilfrid Brimley wants to sponsor an xB I say go for it! It's better than a bunch of old people in oversized cadilacs doing involuntary lane changes because they can't control their boat of a car. Well that's my $.02
chadfo 09-23-2004, 12:28 AM I have to agree that most of the xBs I've seen have had drivers who appear to be at least 30 and most 45 plus. I'm 33 and I love my box.
It is just a car. Being part of a club or just being a car person <---- politically correct for once, is a state of mind. We all come here because we chose a particularly abstract looking vehicle compared to the norm. We are outside the BOX. Someone was nice enough to give us a forum to communicate, share, and above all else fellowship. I think it's a great thing no matter what age that we can all come here and be a community.
Damn, I'm almost 40. I must be so old, I'm a stale fart.
Hey, just because I'm almost 40 doesn't mean nothing. For instance, I haven't worn pants in over 3 years...

Can't we old farts like cool cars?
you young wipersnapers [what IS that anyway" :) ] chap my hide! just because I am 50ish doesn't mean I won't enjoy an xB
I also have a Tacoma Double cab 4x4 highly modified [re geared, locking diffs front and rear, custom bumpers, on board air etc.] and my wife drives a Tacoma Double cab prerunner with custom bumpers and she has the FIRST Bossani muffler on a Tacoma double cab!
I have the rear spoiler, leather seats and fogs. I will be adding alloys and a fart tube...
hmm, maybe a 3 inch lift and 4wheel drive
Tuning69 09-23-2004, 02:40 AM [Sarcasm]Older people are buying xBs cause the middle age - mid life crisis men can't get into the Corvettes as easy as they could when they were younger[Sarcasm] :D
naoki 09-23-2004, 02:56 AM Woah... so xB is the new Corvette.
Hmm, I've got some punks to race now. Watch out, here I come!
BusTweeker 09-23-2004, 03:45 AM How old are you?
Yes old people drive xBs and young people drive xBs. WTF I'm 31 and dont consider myself old!!! Bite me!!!! I'm a mechanic and I just wanted a kick ___ looking car and th xb fit the bill. You Punks better watch who you call old!! Just kidding guys! I just love driving my xB!!!
MRGTHUNT 09-23-2004, 03:59 AM The Xb makes the old folks feel young again.
Its all good .
Enjoy yourself while you can 8)
hotbox05 09-23-2004, 08:22 AM not to be a punk but damn i must be one of the youngest on here .i'm only 19 almost 20. my first new car my 5th car overall i love cars . i thot the medain age for an xb would be older than me but i expected to see some young guns out here too and i guess i'm just not seein it
X_Boxer 09-23-2004, 08:26 AM I did a test-sit in the Honda showroom. That was an interest-killer for me. Imo the Element somehow seems smaller inside than the xb. And very lousy driver seat comfort, very little rearward adjustability if I recall rightly. Terrible blind spots- made worse if the rear seats are kicked up (neat feature that) for floor space.
Harder to get into the front seats. So freaking heavy compared against xB- I think for street use, city driving, etc I would not like the Element at all.
And to be really frank, I went in there LOVING the looks of the Elements I'd seen running around on the streets.
Nah- Scion xb still, for me. It's such a great little car it is everyman's car: old, young, deef and blind- you can live with the Scion and be happy to your last.
That's a coooool crossover demographic!
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 09-23-2004, 08:43 AM Expect to see a lot more old farts driving xBs. It's one of those rare things that's both hip and practical. :D
Yesh, I can dig that.
And it looks off da hook.
If you can wrap yer brain around that, yo.
boilerman 09-23-2004, 10:37 AM I can see nothing wrong with using Depends for seat covers. I have not yet found seat covers for the drivers seat which will work with the side air bags. Perhaps I can make a custom seat cover for the drivers seat with Depends. I have enough duct tape on hand so only have to get some Depends. Thanks for the idea.
PS--Although I am 67 years young I am not dribbling yet. My problem is coffee cups, soda pop cans/bottles and snacks. However I am uncertain of the containment capability of my dog so Depends on the passenger seat might be appropriate.
tcm_xB 09-23-2004, 11:55 AM Look at new Civic owners- They are all "old"
But the young ones swap the motors :P
The first time I saw an xB was at the 2003 Nopi Nationals. Some old white couple were driving it. The first xB I saw in town (I still thought they were butt ugly at this time) was driving by an older man (50's) . It doesn't bother me at all. The car is comfortable, cheap, spacious, and should be reliable. I recommend everyone buy an xB :D
the_saint 09-23-2004, 12:10 PM I have not yet found seat covers for the drivers seat which will work with the side air bags.
I thought the side air bag this was a type-o :?
hotluva 09-23-2004, 12:36 PM Actually I just read the marketing data on the Xb and the average age is 36. Compare this to the average age of almost any other car on the road today and you'll note that it is lower.
Yes there are old people driving, but you only notice them... Take a look around you. There are LOTS of old people driving now adays.
BTW, I'm exactly the median age at 36... Sold an Audi TT to get more room for the baby, and haven't looked back. I've been a car nut since I was about 5 and have owned a lot of great cars... Thiis one is about as fun to own as any I've had.
[Sarcasm]Older people are buying xBs cause the middle age - mid life crisis men can't get into the Corvettes as easy as they could when they were younger[Sarcasm] :D
sarcasm my A*S :!: I got my scion because the daily climb into my 4X4 was too PAINFUL, and I needed something I could get into with my arthritic hip
RPMxB 09-24-2004, 01:06 AM ... I got my scion because the daily climb into my 4X4 was too PAINFUL, and I needed something I could get into with my arthritic hip
You've got that right.
3 bears: too hot / too cold / just right.
Mini or Camry too low / SUV too high / xB just right. RPM
oh man i saw my very first Xa on the road tonight and same same exct color too but when i saw how old they was in there 60's
lol
MAN
but my car is one of a kind now :D :D :D i did nothing to it no mods no nothing, all i did to make it one of a kind is park it under an BIG OAK tree then you start hearing some ding ding DONK (love dem acorns)
skybiker 09-24-2004, 09:22 PM Hey! I resemble that remark! I'm waiting on delivery of mine from the port now. Had to chase one down to see what it was the first time. Very cool car...... I happen to classify as a senior citzen, however, I do skydive & ride a motorcycle every day, so us Ol farts might not always be ready for the rockin' chair (town car) yet. I only put a couple thousand miles a year on my car, about 25,000 on the bike...... Just try to keep up with me!!!!! :D
SkyBiker

ScionRI 09-24-2004, 11:42 PM 18 years of xB lover right here.
Boxed_In 09-25-2004, 01:03 AM Just 'cause the wrapper's a little wrinkly doesn't mean the chocolate's stale!  Glad I saw this post, at 41 I'm feeling like the youngin' on the block
I was told by my 14 year old daughter's friends that I'm the coolest dad of everyone in the high school! They just LOVE the neon floor lights and cupholder lights! everyone ELSE'S dad drives a minivan BLECH :?
silkywilson 09-25-2004, 05:35 AM Hey im in FL... and the younger people I have seen driving xBs are 60ish yea thats the younger I swear I seen a few 80 year olds... and one guy early 20s on the highway once... but overwhelming 60-70 year old grocery getters...lol Old people want to be kewl too...
TREX212426 09-26-2004, 06:38 PM well the few that i have seen here in NYC the drivers have all been "young" people.....either in or just out of college
samshaft 09-26-2004, 08:19 PM I am 49 years old and just bought 2005 blue onyx, manual trans Xb saturday. I saw a guy who had to be in his 60's purchasing a black pearl xb the same day. I got to talking to him and he is young at heart like I , I appreciates fun cars! Age is just a number.
KDawg 09-26-2004, 08:45 PM Let me explain it to all the younger folks. My Dad always said: "Don't be in a hurry to grow up, one day all of this will be yours and you won't want it either."
I'm a week one buyer [June 04, in fact the first one off the lot], over 55+, and own one bad ___ bB. I bought because it was different, had unique design possibilities, and frankly didn't look like everyone else on the market.
I know the demographics that Toyota was aiming for and that's the son's of ....., SCION. But the truth is they unknowingly tapped a larger audience than they expected. Toyota also thought the xA would out sell the xB by four to one. oops, they were wrong on that one too.
Price, economy and style in one vehicle is a good idea no matter what your age.
DenZinz 09-26-2004, 08:52 PM im running into the same problem!!!! all the people who drive XBs around here (Cincinnati) are OLD OLD.... Oh heaven forbid that these people are older...
I'm talking about the old people who have no idea that they're driving a Scion.
What does that mean?? This is a car not a high school prom where if you were 19+ you would look silly at.
After all its still a toyota.
Better question should be...What mods do you have on your car and how old you are?
So list your mods and how old you are, we'll determine who has a better ride.
samshaft 09-26-2004, 08:53 PM so who has determines the perimeters for when someone is considered old. 30-35-50? Life is too short. Enjoy!!
Boxed_In 09-27-2004, 01:24 AM so who has determines the perimeters for when someone is considered old. 30-35-50? Life is too short. Enjoy!!
Exactly... we have eternity to be dead and less than 100 years to live. So spend what time you have living not dying. Frig the age stereotypes. I think Mick Jagger will be still writing and performing well into his 70's. Live on baby. I'll listen in my xB.
