First blood oh yeah def. I could of made a list of 100 or more but figured I'd annoy people wit a list that big.
New Killswitch is good but more emo to me and not as intense. For example listen to My Last Serenade or Life to Lifeless vs. somethin off of End of Heartache like When Darkness Falls or even the title track End of Heartache. Don't get it twisted I still like the band just seems less "intense".
Anyone like KillWhitneyDead? Crazy band with sound clips ranging from family guy to Hellraiser. Great band.

Just a few of the top of me head that have not been listed yet I don't believe.
Sigh, Atheist, God Forbid, Behemoth, Aghora(for Cynic fans), Mr Bungle, Fantomas, Clutch, Melt-Banana, Strapping Young Lad, Sevendust, Green Carnation, and Death.
I suppose some listed above you cannot classify as metal, but **** you.

I knew it was only a matter of time before someone made some ignorant comment like this. Hahaha! Either you're not hardcore enough because of the music you like, or the music is sh!t. You can't degrade someone just cause they like a band that you dont.
Express your dislike for the music, sure. But dont slander peoples taste because you dislike it. Im sure you listed a few bands that people think are PURE CR@P. But its your taste in music, not their's...

YES!!! Merciful Fate! Dont Break The Oath is quintessential.
No sir. I've heard those terms many times before.
according to wiki...
* Power metal is a style of heavy metal music with the aim of evoking an "epic" feel, combining characteristics of traditional metal with thrash metal or speed metal, often within symphonic context.
*Grindcore often shortened to grind, is an evolution of crust punk, most commonly associated with death metal, a very different, though similarly extreme, style of music. The name "grindcore" having actually being coined by Napalm Death's drummer, Mick Harris.
But I couldn't begin to tell ya what crust punk is. Never heard of that one.

I'm more of a punk fan than a metalhead, so me having a glass of champagne only once per year (New Years Eve tradition) is about as close to straight edge as I'm going to get. I absolutely do not drink, do drugs, or smoke. Sex and caffiene is good, but hardcore straight edge is kinda against even that.
And before anyone gets started, 95% of what you hear on the radio that you think is punk, is...not.

I can't believe no one gave props to the guy on the first page for listing SWORN ENEMY and 100 DEMONS ........ Dude mad props for being a NYC Hardcore fan
No one mentioned Most Precious Blood or MOWER ........
and I hate to break the news to you big fans of Avenge Sevenfold but they AREN't metal more like EMO..... Saw them at Ozzfest and they came on after Hatebreed, boy talk about almost getting BOO'd off stage.... no one was even paying attention to them except the Emo kids (you know the ones I speak of)
Dragonforce Sucks as well but I only saw them live at Ozzfest couldnt even hear them just sounded like static and a gorilla banging on pans
Those are HARDCORE bands though, this is a METAL thread, and mower? Come on man, they're just a bro-core band on the same label as kotton mouth kings

sometimes my age pops thru, and it's the old british metal ( priest, maiden, etc ) mixed with 80's versions like Helloween, Grim Reaper, etc that I'll toss in the player. Other times it's bands like Paradise Lost, Tiamet, Type "O", etc... to get some gloom and doom.
And stuff like Alice n chains, godsmack, etc just sounds great cranked up.
I don't usually care for the black metal genre, but on occasion enjoy slayer or cradle of filth.
Finally, i'll listen to older Metallica and bring back the memories of seeing them ( and bands like anthrax, etc ) at the old "Headliners" club here in Madison in the early 80's... those were the days...

There was one guy, and one guy only who embodied "black" metal. King "Merciful Fate" Diamond. it should have been left at that.
Black metal became a parody of itself circa 1992. Until then very few people knew what BM was. Most still do not understand what it means.
IMO, there was and is only 1 BM band. Burzum.
The corpse paint is lame, agreed.
KD has nothing to do musically with BM. He is simply a heavy metal act.

simply? besides Bathory and maybe venom, 1987's Abigail is the best example of early black metal. even though i grew up with it, i hate it myself but i gotta give it props. (though u gotta respect KD's range for a male, up there with elvis imo)
Burzum came ten years after these guys.

I have to disagree. KD and MF have always been heavy metal. There is nothing even remotely BM about either one. Venom, maybe, was coming closer to BM, but they were always a heavy metal band as well, albeit it a bit more "evil" in sound.
If any early band could be considered (at best) proto BM, it would have been Bathory.

Sure, he has a talented voice and I never implied otherwise. Back when I was a kid, I listened to all sorts of heavy metal including MF/KD. Now I know better though.
Burzum came ten years after these guys.
Yes, but thats comparing apples to oranges. Burzum and MF/KD are so different on so many levels (astethics, emotion, action, talent) that a comparison is waste of time IMO. Sure they are both metal, but thats about all they have in common.
Varg most likely listened to and evoloved they sound of Venom, but they are nothing alike.

k, so do you believe any BM(black metal, not bowel movements :P ) came before 1990?
KD had the story telling in songs, the singing style and look of BM before anyone else i've seen. yes his music was crappy and dated if you attempt to listen to it now and my favorite song of his when i was like 12 was some twisted xmas tune, but i just don't see a better example before him.
imo, KD is to black metal as black sabbath is to heavy metal. Not the best example, but probably the first. IMO black sabbath was at the time "hard rock" as led zeppelin was, but they laid the foundation for heavy metal and certain tracks of sabbath taken on their own are heavy metal, and if I had to name the first heavy metal band, it' d probably be sabbath, but clearly they are not true "heavy metal".
now, the only metal of anykind i'd listen to with respect are Slayer albums from "Show No Mercy to Seasons in the Abyss" and Sepultura's "Beneath the Remains to Roots".

No, I do not. Maybe a demo from Mayhem or Burzum, but as far as official real releases, no, anything before 1990 was not BM. But remember my narrow point of view when it comes to BM - I do enjoy a number of bands (Immortal, Enslaved, Burzum and Emperor) but only consider 1 band to be real BM, one band that embraced all the anti socialism that 99% of all other bands simply say they "believe in satan/evil/killing/whateverelseyoucanthinkof...that being Burzum. You see, Varg was a unique, strong individual (Im not here to argue about the right or wrong of his beliefs though) and that personality came through in his music. He didnt simply pose, but he put action into words. This is what BM was suppose to be, a rejection of everything and every constraint put upon the soul by the powers that be. But almost all the bands simply played the game and had no true beliefs.
Also I have always thought Mayhem sucked, while many consider them some kind of founding fathers and should be held up to some godly status.
[KD had the story telling in songs, the singing style and look of BM before anyone else i've seen.

No, BS (or Earth as they were called before the name change) has always been a blues band with rock/metal elements. They paved the way for heavy metal thats for sure. But the evolution (simplified) goes: rock-hard rock-metal- thrash metal-speed metal-death emtal- black metal. I would never say Iron Maiden were thrash or speed or anything else other than heavy metal.
KD/MF have never, and will never be BM.

k, i see your point. i personally can't stand to listen to kd or black metal nowadays anyway.
i always thought the evolution went
blues
rock & roll -beatles and such, pre '75
hard rock - sabbath, zepplin, ac/dc, van halen
heavy metal - i.e. metallica, megadeth,etc..
death metal - i.e. slayer, sepultura, morbid angel, cannibal corpse
then, after 89ish, ppl started re-categorizing new & older albums of heavy & death metal into subsections, like thrash, speed, black, etc...when no one really cared much back then cuz if u listened to metal, you listend to metal, and there just werent that many ppl that listend to it anyway.
i know little of iron maiden, except that "run to the hills, run for your life" sounds like hard rock imo.

quite frankly all the categories can be a real pain. I prefer to say I like metal, whether that means i'm listening to Sabbath, Priest, Type "O", Metallica, etc....
If the guitars are distorted, the sound heavy, doesn't matter to me if they are riffing @ 90 mph or playing slow and dirgy.
I personally have never cared for the "black/death" genre, but i'll listen to a Cradle of filth or slayer cd and really enjoy it. I either like the music/style from a band, or I don't. Though I may like the sound of that music, I can usually only "take" the growling vocals so long before it's on to another disc.

I could very well be mistaken since MF/KD are not high on my interest level, but didn’t KD start using the corpse paint after he went solo? 85/86? Anyway, I guess you could say he got the idea from Alice Cooper or KISS. Maybe even Misfits or The Damned. It could even be ancient Germanic/Teutonic in origin. Who really knows. My only point (and I am to blame for going off track Im sure :P ) is that the music is NOT BM.
I am in agreement w/ both of you though....catagories are overused and annoying. But they do have there uses. I dont like to say I listen to metal since so many bands are lumped into the term that people get the wrong idea....I do not want ANYONE thinking I liked Iced Earth, Avenged Sevenfold or the rest of there cohorts. I dispise more than 90% of metal, so I tend to be specific when mentioning music I like. Even though today I only put it in one of two catagories….good music and shi**y music.

same reason i won't say i listen to metal, I just say "slayer before dave left, and sepultura before the bros split" to ppl in the know.
i don't want ppl to think i listen to metallica which to every who doesn't listen to "metal" is the only thing that comes to mind. I like for whom the bell tolls, harvestor of sorrow, one, and that's about it.
If anyone is old enough to remember when metallica "metallica" came out, "enter sandman" was played over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. any rock station during that first 12 months afterward had a track from that album as every other song. Every guy driving around with hair longer than 4 inches had that album playing on repeat.
That ruined metallica forever for me.

I was lucky enough ( or old enough... ) to see Metallica at a local club in '82 (i think), the Ride the Lightning tour... my first shot of thrash, damn near blew me away. though I've enjoyed their other stuff ( i actually don't listen to much radio so any "overplay" is my own fault ) that early impression was tough to follow.
My thing is I don't like all metal, don't hate all country or rap, like a small portion of instrumentalists, etc... which for some people is hard to understand. You know--they'll lump you as a "metalhead", or whatever.
Oh well, whatever I like I like, I don't listen to music to please anyone else ( i'm too old to worry about trivial crap like that ).
Either a band's "sound" hooks me, or it doesn't.

Sepultura (early... think Arise)

I see one person has name soilwork, definately an awesome band, if you like in flames, you have to pick them up. New album is coming out soon, and if you haven't heard it I totally recommend picking up Stabbing the Drama. In Flames is pure melodic death metal awesomeness.
Although I have not seen anyone mention Corrosion of conformity, Down (spetember 26th y'all), Dark Tranquility, Crowbar, Trivium (while they look bad their older stuff is awesome)
I do love Pantera, Damage plan (R.I.P. Dime) and hellyeah. Just to name a few, Iced Earth is awesome as well if you like epic metal. (new album as well)
Some ones that people like, that I don't understand, Bullet for my valentine (yay screaming emo, and don't try to argue this unless you've seen them live, and if you have... you wouldn't argue this) as I lay dying (same as bullet), Lamb of God (hardcore just isn't my scene, plus their live shows have alot to be desired, but they have my respect unlike the last 2 bands), and Shadows Fall (they put on a great show on ozzfest and I do respect them, but I just can't get into their music.)
oh and P.S. am I the only one who sees Lordy (what a horrible name) as horrible?

After reading that again, I did come off a bit harsh....but it was not my orignal intent.....no, really! I simply meant the topic of this thread mentions metal, not tough guy hardcore.

I find it slightly amazing that it took until the 3rd page for someone to mention Slayer, the 4th page to mention Celtic Frost, Iron Maiden, and Type O Negative, and the 6th page to mention S.O.D. I didnt see anyone else notice this.
Also my list;
Iron Maiden (have owned EVERY album), Metallica (saw them live 8 Nov. 2004), Megadeth, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Type O Negative (and Carnivore), SOD, Rammstein, Ministry, Nailbomb (glad to see some others have heard them), Sepultura, Exodus, and recently Strapping Young Lad.
I also listen to XM 42, though just a little heavy on the extreme stuff for my tastes.

Some of the bands I listen to. They range from Black Metal to Melodic Metal, so quite a nice selection on the metal variants-
Norther
Sylosis
Dominia
Megaherz
Anterior
Rammstein
Dimmu Borgir
Naglfar
Nightrage
Dark Tranquility
Attic of Love
Elvenking
Sonata Artica
Delain
Nightwish
Amatory
I do listen to stuff like Disturbed and Godsmack, but I have found that the stuff coming out of Europe and Russia is just so much better. I'm more into the Melodic Metal/Death Metal. Basically metal with usually something like a Violin, flute, orchestra etc. Vocals range from a female vocalist with a very nice singing voice, to the usual metal screaming, to a combo of the two. Just has a fresh addictive sound that is missing from what's coming out of the U.S., and that's not just towards metal but all genres. Only American band on my list is Attic of Love and they're a small band originally out of New York. Basically Tool meets Jethro Tull, very good stuff.
I love listening to all of these artists and can't recommend any of them enough...But Anterior is still my top. Can't wait for their next album.

Yeah, any of the Norwegian black metal. Gorgoroth, etc. Can't really stand any of those hardcore, or whatever, bands. Had to put up with them/their fans too many times.

definately check out blood mountain if you like a bit angrier, they are saying this album will have more of a progressive/classic rock sound. which is still awesome cause they've managed to retain their same sound.
