Most of it looks pretty close, but I wonder about the depreciation and maintenance categories. This chart says the xA loses $3,450 in value after one year. But I thought used Scions were going for more than new ones in some places. Hmm. Also, under maintenance, the yearly costs are several hundred to over $1,000. Huh? Does an xA need much more than a few oil changes each year? Even new tires after a couple of years wouldn't cost that much. Pardon me if I am being naive.

Thanks for any feedback from any current xA owners. I'm still waiting for mine.

$1,000 in maintenance!? That's a hella lot of car wash supplies. You get 3 free oil changes, and the oil only needs to be changed every 5000 to 7000 miles. A special oil filter is only $8. An air filter is cheap, and if you get the AEM, they said you just clean the filter. What could they possibly be thinking?!

If you follow the link you will see that first year maintenance is only $394, and the average for the first three years is only $528. This data is normalized for the average consumer, meaning car washs etc. are included in this cost figure. The free oil changes from Toyota are a promotion subject to change, so are not factored into the math. Edmunds also calculates oil changes every 5000 miles if memory serves me correctly.

The more important analysis comes from clicking on the link to compare the xA to other cars in it's class. You will see that it is the lowest cost per mile to operate.

The actual parts and labor estimates also include every recommended inspection etc. done by someone else. At the following mileage intervals they estimate.

5,000 Miles = $100.45
10,000 Miles = $100.45
15,000 Miles = $116.70

Labor for just inspecting things alone runs $148.56 for the first year and 99% of these inspections can be done by any knowledgeable owner. Tire Rotation runs another $58.59.

In addition to having the lowest total cost of ownership in the comparison class of vehicles, the xA also retains the highest value:

Scion xA = 39.4%
Hyundai = 30%
Ford Focus = 32%
Kia = 20%
Chevy Aveo = 27%

And of course, all of this is based on a bunch of assumptions by Edmunds.

if you think the xA is bad, look up the srt4 and wrx. the numbers are amazing.

XA's are magnets for the morons (who don't check for oncoming traffic before deciding to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic, to make a left turn)

No XA's are awesome little cars, it actually held up well in the accident.

To stay on topic, the oil changes are every 5,000 miles, pretty standard.

I did notice somewhere that people were selling Scion XA's on the east coast for a ton more money than you pay for a new one anywhere else. Confused me, anyone see this as well?
