Default My brand new tc rolled down my hill at home =[

I'm sorta laughing about it today since it happened yesterday but my dad took it to go get some gas for the mower and he parks it at the end of our driveway where there's a pretty steep hill at the end and when he comes back from mowing I'm at home and he says "you didn't leave yet"? and I'm like uh no why, cuz your car isn't there i'm like wtf so he's like omg call the police i think it's been stolen so i run and look at the driveway and it's not there then the next conclusion i get is oh dear god please tell me it didn't roll down the ____ing hill so sure enough i see the tracks on the grass and under some trees in my backyard.

I immediately went crazy and started cursing my dad out beyond belief (not realizing tomorrow is father's day) I ran down the hill coming up with all kinds of images that it's been damaged, but I see that the driver side had contact with the goddamn picnic table and a plastic chair was stuck in the wheel well and I see one very long scratch like someone keyed the car near the handle and then like 4 other scratches. I went hysterical yelling at my dad to why didn't you put the ____ing parking brake up and how stupid you coulda been and he's like "I LEFT IT IN FIRST GEAR" i'm like THAT DOESN'T SAVE YOU IT'S PARKING BRAKE THEN GEAR AS A SECONDARY back up.

So i washed it as much as i could and i'm going to get some turtle wax and see if it can come out because the big ones didn't take the paint away just some residue from the other ____.

Sorry just had to vent this ____, brand new car I got like at the end of april and now this ____ happens i take such good care of my tc too.

That sucks, I don't think you should've yelled at your dad like that, but whatever.

Anyway, that is weird though... it shouldn't have moved if he left it in first anyway.

Yes, you would obviously pull up the handbrake first and use the gear as a backup, but technically, leaving it gear shouldn't be a problem unless someone knocks it out of gear or pushes down the clutch pedal.

I'm still not getting how it failed and moved down the hill, unless your dad didn't really have it first... in which case, it would have been rolling since even before he got out of the car. First gear is such a high ratio (reverse is even higher) that its super hard to move from the wheel side more than maybe a millimeter either way.

Something smells strange...

it should hold in first gear, even on a hill.

I'm sorry to hear that about the tC. [Stuff] happens. :\

Take it easy on your dad, though. Mistakes and accidents do happen.

That's messed up what you did to your dad. You need to put priorities in order. Worst case is that it'll cost ya some money which your dad would probably pay for. You can be angry at him all you want, but like ilovemytc said, i'm sure he feels bad about it. Everyone makes mistakes.

In any case, thats really funny! haha, sorry

hey thanks for all the responses guys and yeah me and my dad are cool about it now and we both got over it. I decided to get some turtle wax and see if i can get them out of there the guy at advanced auto parts was like you shouldn't wax it right now though and probly wait till 6 months. This makes sense of course but i really wanna do it now but if i have to wait then i will i wouldn't wanna harm the paint any more. any advice? thanks guys

This is why you don't talk to those guys . What is he expecting, for the paint to naturally heal?! hahahhaa

BTW, I still don't understand how the car just "rolled" in first gear. That doesn't happen. I still don't believe your story, just to let you know. What I mean is that I'm sure it rolled away... but I don't think it had anything to do with it being left in gear with no handbrake

yea, there's no way that the car would've rolled when it's parked in 1st gear. and even if he did accidently knock it back into neutral, he would've known when he was stepping out of the car.

1st gear doesn't fail you. it's the handbrake that fails.

x10. if it WAS in 1st, theres no way it "slipped out" and rolled down the hill on its own. something fishy there.

that sucks though. but your dad probably helped u buy the car anyway right???? so i wouldn't be too hard on him.

Turtle wax will not get paint blemishes out. Wax is a protectant "only" and not paint cleaner. You'll need rubbing compound and or polish for this along with a high speed buffer depending on how deep the damage is.

There is also a high possibilty that you'll need re-painting as mentioned by someone else.

I'm confused? Why don't some of you think a car can pop out of gear? ...thats absurd, it happens, thats why theres an e brake and steering wheel lock.
...I believe its even part of the parallel parking test to get your drivers license, right along with which way to lock your wheels on a hill.
