Here's my current fun.... I just thought I'd let you see before, so when I'm done, you'll see the bombastic after shot!
I'm pulling the engine tomorrow for a whole redo and repaint, along with redoing the engine bay totally,,, then the windows come out and onto the body repair and car respray in it's stock color, BLAZE orange... with black hood stripes, black roof, and all powdercoated black wheels and accessories, along with getting on the tint bandwagon with the tails/turns and fun...
It'll be pretty soon enough... just a whole lot of scrubbing/cleaning/painting/filling/welding to come :(

I'm digging the vintage pepsi machine in the back too- when did you get that installed? hehe
MiniGuy
06-23-2007, 12:53 AM
LoL.... Yeah, I got a full fledged machine back there...
I got it from the tint place, as there was a sign on it saying "Free", you take away, change maker doesn't work...
We took it, overrode the change thingy, and now it's stocked with Pepsi, Dew, Dr. Pepper, Costco Protein shakes, and COORS light... LoL...
And an added bonus... when we opened it up, there way 30 dollars in change inside it! so we got paid 30 bucks to take a fully operational and totally awesome machine!
BTW - here's updated pics now with the engine and subframe out!

Isn't that already the factory orange? Or are you just getting it a shiny new coat of the same one?
MiniGuy
06-23-2007, 04:09 AM
I'm not going to be able to change the color, as it'd require me to strip the car down to NOTHING to full cover all the old color, so I'm going to do my best to strip it down as far as I convieniently car and put a nice new and modern coat of Blaze Orange on her, with a few "tweaks" here and there to make her look all pretty and unique. like the black hood stripes, roof and such.
In all, it's a lovely huge project and right up my alley for my next challenge...

Maybe while the engine is out, you can clean shine that little guy up, too?
MiniGuy
06-23-2007, 05:32 AM
LoL.... I'm waiting on some awesome engine paint and special stripping/etching material to do the engine (probably next week it'll be fully stripped down and painted)
The subframe is going to be degreased and stripped down tomarrow, maybe repainted if I feel up to it.
Ultimately the engine bay will be stripped and coated with a special material to keep it all nice and nifty. The engine won't be back in for a while though, as I'll clean it up perfect and repaint it, along with all the engine components, and then let it sit in the corner. I'll put the subframe back in, (to make it a rolling chassis)
The engine will stay out till the car gets repainted, as it's so much easier to keep everything all clean and purdy that way.
Right now it's just attacking each part piece by piece, then putting all those pieces together to make a nifty result.

The Good Ol' Pops has been working on the engine bay and dremel testing on the engine today while I'm here at work... Trying to find the best dremel heads to take care of our issues.
tomorrow I should be able to finish the engine bay coating and hopefully clean the remainder of the engine in preparation for paint... It'll get there...

so if you want to take it down to bare metal quick and easy
go to a paint store and get this stuff it used to be called zip strip and it was used for striping aircraft. THe stuff works amazingly well and in like no time at all, also pick up some stuff that will turn that rust back into metal they have it at the same place I just forget what they call it, then you should be able to fill it really easily.
Good luck it is looking great.
Jman007
06-29-2007, 02:00 AM
are you thinking of POR15
06-29-2007, 05:03 PM
It has been a while since I used it but I think htat is what it is called. I know that it reoxidizes the rust turning the properties back into natural metal, at that point you can weld right on it and it stops the cancer, Ido know that if you do not treat it rust never sleeps and it will only come back.
And they now have several kinds of industrial automobile paint stripper and it works so nicely with little or no sanding.
here are a few names of stripper and some are non toxic:
http://www.scottgrundfor.com/ideas/paintoff.html
this is just some great info on various different ways to efectivly strip paint
http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search-alias=automotive&field-keywords=automotive%20paint%20removers&page=1
great products offered on Amazon.com
http://www.ecosafetyproducts.com/Paint-Stripper-s/6.htm?gclid=CIC78prpgY0CFQiAHgodB3ZxPw
for those that are eco minded
http://www.bluelightningproducts.com/
also another of the many sources for all the needs to restore your older clasic to prestine condition
and jsut a quick note, my x father in law had been working on this old 38 buick roadster for about three months, he had done some of the body work, and attempted to start the striping process with sand paper, he got about 1/8 of the car striped in about three weeks, and caused some damage as well using the wrong grit sand paper. I came in with some automotive paint stripper and applied a couple of coats, a few hours latter came along with a putty knife and had the rest of the car stripped down to bare metal in a few hours. With no other damage to the car.
THe products have gotten a lot better since I used this one and a lot more safer as well. Try it out and you to will be suprised at how fast you can strip a car down to nothing.
Seriously try this out, jsut make sure to get all the stripper off and throughly wash and prep the car befor paint you can do it youself in about a day. Plus it is a ton of fun

I own a VW bug I know all about rust
ouch I used to own one of those to I know what you mean, I think the worst one htat I ahve ever had to deal with was I ahd an old 1937 studabaker Dictator, the rear pan was rusted out of it, so I cut out what was left haning on the fringes of it and of course I did not know to treat it back then, welded in a new pan and did some custom fabricating of some body pieces.......I think it is funny I had a european wheel, but did not know how to treat rust. After doing all that the rust came back as ususal and hte whole new pan just hit the ground.... now I know to treat rust.

I'm using POR-15 on my engine currently (The whole engine kit)... It has a marine grade degreaser, then a crazy good rust killer/etcher, then a good base coat, then the engine enamel... It's a GREAT setup...
I have pretty much every engine component done, I just picked up the seals, then I need to finish the painting of the top end of the engine and I will put it all back together again...
It's almost there... just got work the next few days to take care of, then I'll be back to working on the mini.

LoL....
I haven't filled her back up yet with all her fluids... That'll be dependent on how this week goes... I'm not planning on driving around much beyond around the block maybe, as I have to start on all the exterior body work and have pretty much all the trim and such off too...
I'm sure she'll run like a week knee'd champ again... all 40 hp or whatever... :P First is to get her looking pretty again, after that, or if the engine decides to give out... then maybe a conversion to modern power.
DownhillSpec
07-04-2007, 04:23 PM
i was gonna ask why you didnt just break down the motor and re bearing and ring it while you had it out... plus there is a place in downtown portland called "aluminum head rebuilders" that has an exchange program... you give them your old junker head and like 300 bones and you get back a fresh rebuilt head.... plus if you look at mega squirts they have build your own EFI computers for hella cheap and then its just a matter of building your own manifold and find a motor that is relatively the same size to yoink (yes yoink, its an industry wide term) a fuel rail, pump, lines, returns, regulator and injectors from and after a tiny tuning session (like 3 weeks or so) tada fuel injected fun.

This project I'm doing just for me... no shows or clubs or anything...
I just want to continue to challenge my mind and creativity with something much more cost-conscious and something that will GAIN in value in time and with work, rather than modern cars, which pretty much drop in value every year and consume money like endless pits. (That's the scene I don't want to be in anymore)
When I'm done, I could sell this ride for much more than I bought it for and put into it, and still just love the process of learning and putting time into a project.
It'll be for my wife and me to cruise in and have fun with, why being a great way to challenge me in my off time...

It's been 90 degrees plus around these parts and bodywork was the next thing on the to do list, so it was in a "Delay" mode.... LoL
Today was the coolest it's been for a while, so the front and driver's side have been getting much needed attention to rust and body dent repair...
I'll get pics up eventually of the mess we've made of the outside and inside to check out as it's all a mismatch of primer, filler, marks to show where repairs are needed, and the stock paint.

British car colors tend to be weird... One of the 2-door MG 1100 Sport Sedans I had (big sister to the Mini) was "Faun Grey"...

Yeah, but "Anti-Freeze Green" is at least, uh, antifreeze green, so the name is a close reflection of the color you get. The British "Blaze Red" for tangerine, and "Faun Grey" for blue are just plain strange... :P
