SNS 100 Navigation
Anyone have a chance to check out the SNS 100 navigation system? If so, what do you think? Does it stack up to the current Lexus navi or aftermarket ones? If you havent seen it, its under audio options in 'customize it': http://www.scion.com/bys/pub/setStartOptions.do
if you are going to spend that kinda money, can i suggest http://store.mp3car.com/Mp3Car_Infil..._p/sdk-014.htm. its a carpc for those who dont want to build one. i will have way more functionality and capability than this product. To me this SNS looks more aftermarket than factory so you might be better off getting aftermarket.
here is a thread of someone who installed the infill G4
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/work...4-project.html.
I have the streetdeck software that the infill uses in my car pc and its the best software to date. http://www.streetdeck.com/features.php

I got this unit in my 08 tc. I got it because I didn't have the outright cash for an aftermarket unit.
This system is a great starter system. Covers all the basics and the automatic integration for Ipod is nice too.
--It integrates with the steering wheel controls nicely.
--Has a plethora of sound configuration options (note: Scion Sound Processing is useless on this model because of the other, more advance, sound settings, avoid using SSP)
--has a dual-disc setup: have both a cd and dvd in at one time. though the dvd drive is used for the navigation disc most of the time.
--Great touchscreen interface for ipod and satellite radio control.
--Neon colored buttons look really nice.
--Easy to use interface (like REALLY easy to use)
--big 6"screen
--anti-glare coating
--adjustable/tiltable display for taller people (though with the roof open, sunlight makes it hard to see at extreme angles)
The limitations, which are probably what you are seeking are the following:
-- no 3-D view, so if you are used to Garmin units prepare to be disappointed you only get a Top down view, unless a turn is approaching.
--does not play DVD's. While yes it says it does on the spec sheet there is one HUGE caveat. it will play only DVD's that are PURE movie discs. Modern discs almost always have some kind of computer related content (such as movie player software) on them. Sadly the SNS-100 unit detects this as a DVD-ROM....which it doesn't support and thus won't play the disc. It also won't play DVD-/+R/RW discs if you wanted to load up one with MP3's. So unless you have like an older DVD, its unlikely it'll play any modern movie.
--Does not allow for XM-TrafficNav or any other traffic service. If you live in a major city, this being left out can suck
--Does not have Bluetooth. Though personally, bluetooth in a car is stupid. Your conversation is heard by everyone around you through the car speakers, and if you turn your car off it ends your call. Better to get a high end Bluetooth headset anyway.
--Funky route calculations. I've noticed this system tends to like 'grid-style' driving. Meaning if have a trio of roads that create a triangle, it will guide you down the perpendicular roads before it navigates you down the diagonal (and likely shorter) road if all three streets are in close proximity of each other.
--Arrival Times and Speeds are often wrong and are limited to 75mph. While we should all drive safely and within the speed limits, the navigation system doesn't calculate your time-to-destination based on your current speed. It calculates it based on the speed limits or the manually adjusted maximum speed of 75mph. So even though you are jammed in bumper to bumper traffic. It'll still tell you that your 10mile trip will only take 3 minutes. Also, if you are doing 100mph, it still say that a 60 mile trip will take 60minutes. (NOTE, I am not sure if this limitation is also present on any other aftermarket navi's)
--Disables Features when moving. yes, I know other navigation systems do this as well, but its worth noting that if you are going over 5pmh or so, it grays out 2/3s of the navigation features. Though it does allow for detouring and emergency services (police, hospital, Dealerships) on the fly.
--street names don't scale to fit the map or dont exist at all at certain zoom levels. When you zoom in or out on the map, names are in fixed positions on the map. so if you zoom in, you may cut off the name of a cross street or not see it at all. This goes for major roads, not just arterial ones...which is a major loss since the $200 garmin nuvi 205 can do this.
--Map Updates from Toyota cost $250. They release these every fall, but at the whopping cost of $250 a hit to get the latest map data (yes only map data not a new version of the mapping software itself), its unlikely you'll be able to keep your unit up to date (NOTE, not sure if other navi's have this problem)
--finally, it doesn't show standard FM radio data such as artist or title...this is retarded considering that the stock radio in cars like the cobalt can do this. This is also the reason why you can't get FM traffic updates for the navigation software. (Note: This does NOT apply to satellite radio. You CAN see title and artist info if you have XM Radio)
Hope someone finds this information useful.

I paid for one and wold not pay again. For sat radio the display names are all cut off and do not scroll. The sound is pretty good at least as good as the regular radios.
no hands free mode (IE blutooth)
Does not display time or speed (WTF)
routing is not as good as Gramin
short story - I would strongly suggest buying something else.

The car already has a clock and speedometer, so I really don't see why a navi would ever need those.
And I do have to agree that the routing isn't as good, but then again, Garmin can whip out a new model of navi every 3 months where as a car maker cant.
it was a middle of the road navi with a top tier price. The recent RS's for both the xB2 and xD do more, for less money.
No problem on the antenna.
What serial number SNS are u trying to install? I just installed a 08662-21810 in a 2008 xb. Everything plugged in without any wire cutting but the video does not show any video. I get the sound but no picture. What is your thought on this?

that is what I am installing in my son's 08 Tc. His does not show video either. We can hear the movie but can't get to DVD menu or see anything. My understanding is that the brake and reverse wires need to be hooked up in order to see the video b/c the parking brake has to be on in order to watch. Your SNS should have come with a wire harness that has three wires. It hooks into the back of the SNS but is not standard in the Scions. It only comes with the SNS unit. The three wires are the speed, reverse, and brake. I found where to hook the brake wire but I have no idea where the reverse wire goes on the tc. Here are the instructions for the xb though. you will see in reading the instructions that it tells you where the reverse wire and brake wire are on the xb. but i do not think the reverse wire is in the same location for the tc and xb b/c the colors are not matching.

I bought mine the same way. That is why I was looking for the antenna and wire harness before. The local scion dealer here said they didn't sell just the harness but I bought one from someone online. Let me know if you have problems getting the wire harness. I'll send you to the guy who sold me mine. I found him on ebay but he didnt have the harness listed. I just took a shot and sent him an email and he replied letting me know that he had the wire harness and antenna. The wire harness i bought is aftermarket but works fine. I finally hooked the brake wire up this morning and now I can see the dvd/movie when car is parked. So, I am sure that is all you need. I didn't even hook up the reverse wire b/c I didn't know where it was but the guy at best buy today told me that the reverse wire is only if you have a camera in the back and i dont so I do not plan on hooking the reverse wire up. All you have to do is hook up the brake wire and you will be good to go with watching movies.
Thanks for all the great info. I appreciate it. I would appreciate the contact for that guy that sells the harness. I checked with Toyota and they gave me the part number (pt611-21080) and they want $105 for it. Toyota sure knows how to stick it to you for parts.
How would you install a back up camera? What parts and where would you hook it up? Any ideas? I think that I would like to have that option.

No problem. Are you sure that is the right part number? That is the same number as the fit kit I had to buy for my Tc for $53. I will send you seller's email address. He sold me the harness for $15. I have no clue on how to install rear camera, Should not be hard though.
I just bought a new one for $650.... How do you get the door to close on the tC is there a DIY for it I saw a few posts that said u need to mod the door?????? It seemed like a good deal but after reading this idk about it.
Or you can get the SNS fit kit for the TC. But you wont have the door anymore. The fit kit part number is PT611-21080.
This is how it will look like if you decide not to mod the brackets and go with the fit kit instead.
You dont mod the door. You have to mod the bezel or the brackets.
