HOW I INSTALLED MY HELLA HORN SET:

- Open hood
- Disconnect battery before you forget
- Remove the top grill by prying up the three push fasteners with a screwdriver
- With a 10MM socket, remove the front facia by removing the following fasteners:
A) The ones in each front wheel opening
B) The ones at the very outside corners of the bottom lip
C) The five underneath that attach to the frame and the splash pan
D) The two bolts at the top
E) The single push fastener in the top middle
- Pull off the facia with an extra tug on each side where a tab snaps into the headlight assembly

There are two horns. One is near the top center of the radiator and the other is off to the driver's side and a little lower. There is a single positive wire to each.

- Unplug the wires
- Unbolt the horns with a 13MM socket
- Keep the black plastic mounting piece from the side horn to use with the new horn

You'll need to make a Y shaped wire like this:
- One piece long enough to easily reach from one horn to the other
- One piece long enough to easily reach from one of the horns to its mounting bolt
- Two flat female connectors
- One washer-shaped connector with a hole big enough for the horn mounting bolt
- Put one of the female connectors on an end of the long wire
- Put the washer connector on an end of the short wire
- Join the two wires with the other female connector
Then:
- Mount the new horns with the washer connector on one of the bolts -- it doesn't matter which as long as you get a good ground.
- Plug your handmade wires onto the horns
- Plug the factory wires onto the horns
- Reconnect the battery and test the horn
- Reinstall the facia and grill

Yes, I checked it out earlier today. Just pop off the 4 (6? can't remember) plastic fasteners with a flathead, then pull the grill upwards. That should be all that you need to do.

Yeah, I need to buy me a set of supertones. If I get them I'll add images to Old Punk's tutorial. I'll probably add the relay and use the battery instead of using the stock wiring/relay.

what kind of wire do you use?

So I take it this applies to the xB? Any power issues..? I want the Hella SuperDeath horns on mine :)

Thanks for posting the instructions, it made the replacement a snap.

I was a little hesitant about removing the whole front end thinking I could get to the horns from below the car (as I have on other cars I have done horn replacement), but I could not due the placement on the xB. It was not that bad to remove the whole front and made the replacement easy. Note that fif you have the OEM fogs you have to reach down into the front end (after you pull the top end loose) and disconnect the fog lights - don't forget to reconnect them when done.

I did not go for anything fancy or high powered (train horns would be nice, but not a must have) just something that sounds like a real car. I have been putting Fiamm "freeway balsters" when replacing horns, but I noticed that if doing a pair that it is cheaper to get the "El Grande" pair from Fiamm than to buy 2 "blasters". Same db rating as a pair of blasters, so I ordered them from Amazon for $20 delivered (free shipping with $25 total order). http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000DLBIGG/motorcyctoure-20

The nice thing about the horns is that draw 10a or less, which is the size of the OEM horn circuit so I opted to not use a relay. The other nice thing is that the OEM horns have standard size connectors on them, so no cutting or soldering needed. I even re-used the OEM brackets. So pretty much plug and play.

In addition to this thread, I installed 2 sets of Hella Twin supertone horns on my xB. on my post regarding the horns, i have put some good wiring diagrams up as well as some more info on the install. i think it may help anyone out who is looking to replace their horns.

Just order my El Grande horns from amazon today let you know how they turn out

same here. i ordered from amazon with a total of $29 i believe. not bad. can't wait to get them !

Still waiting for the weather to get a little warmer and dryier so i can install mine. Not having a garage in New England sucks

got the 'El Grande"s today in the mail. its red though and it says its 12volt. thats standard? or would i have to do the whole relay thingy? inside the package has a relay
