View Full Version : Rewired FOGlights to turn on (Instructions and Pics)
Inazuma 12-24-2003, 08:16 PM Ok everyone, I was bored today.
I rewired my foglights to come on without the headlights or the key in ignition.
I take no responsibility for any damage to your car.
I put them on a webpage to reduce clutter associated with too many pics on this forum.

Besk_one 12-24-2003, 08:45 PM sweet! i've been meaning to do this mod for a while, but haven't had the time to tear everything apart and see how it works.
thanks for saving me a few hours of time!!
TheRedBox 12-24-2003, 09:10 PM Great!! My only concern is if you leave it on, there goes your battery..

I know that, but i just did a quick re-wire just to see if it worked.
The factory foglight wiring is different than usual. I originally wanted to find the wire that turns hot when the headlights turn on. That wire was supposed to go to the ignition wire so the foglights can turn off when you remove the key.
The only way to wire it would be with a relay, but i ran out of relays and my car was taken apart. I will wire it with a relay later this week or next week, with pics.

2fixA 12-25-2003, 05:54 PM nice work and keep us posted on the updates... every little bit of knowledge helps so even a bit of imperfect experimentation can put us a little bit more ahead, thanks again!
TheRedBox 12-25-2003, 10:27 PM Cool that's A LOT better. Now if can only figure out how to wire it for the parking lamps....
I hate messing with the wires..
i bet if you had left them on your sister in law wouldnt have ran into you! j/k cool mod i appreciate(im sure im not alone) how you've been posting all the stuff you do with pics and charts and such! good jorb

All you do is use the parking light wire instead of the ignition wire on my second schematic. It will be used as a trigger.
what type of relay is used? Can I just go to radio shack to pick one up? Very cool mod though! 8)

I never seen relays at Radio Shack. Anyways I would use a Bosch SPDT Relay. They are much more reliable. In the past I have used cheap $1 relays from China, bought at a mom/pop electronics store. Works just as good. Bosche will run you $4-$6 depending where u go.
I usually shop anywhere else than Radio Shack, their products are crap, well at least from my experience.
izzles 12-27-2003, 04:56 PM Thanks I will try that on Friday

They are only a couple of bucks, they are in a cabinet full of drawers, the cabinets have the loose fuses, resistors, caps, transistors and stuff in them. Just look in the book on top of the cabinet and it will tell you which drawer it is in.

awsome post inazuma. thats just what i was looking for... i was trying to figure this out but didnt have quite the balls to mess with too many wires and fry something. i needed a way to turn on my fog lights plus my piaa fog lights and my interior feet-lights plus the future under-car lights all at the same time without having my headlights on.i gotta try it out tomorrow and see how it turns out.
dulcimoo 01-21-2004, 03:29 PM If I remember COWrectly ... driving with just foglights and/or just parking lights on in COWafornia is a violation of the moter vehical code. I guess you CUD say you just forget to turn them off or somthin'...other than that ... it's cool.
rmrc51 04-11-2004, 04:48 PM I assuming that this will also enable you to keep your Fog Lights on when you have your High Beams on. Just what I was looking for!!!!
theboxy 11-01-2004, 07:11 PM Inazuma, did you ever wire the fog lights to turn on when started and off when the key is removed?
Anyone else done this daytime running lights mod?
superjeer 11-01-2004, 07:31 PM yeah, I've had a car in NY fail inspection because they found that the fog lights turned on without the headlights. This was before the notion of "driving lights", so it makes me wonder what constitutes "driving lights" vers. "fog lights". I would like to have some auto on driving lights, and since the fogs are worthless for fog, I thought they would be a good way to do it, but then I rememered the tragedy of the failed inspection.
Big_Bird 11-05-2005, 02:31 AM good write up
