Well first It would be better if we knew what model HU you have. Some DVD units have a code that can be entered that will allow playback while in drive, thus eliminating the need to find the brake light wire. I don't know why your monitor goes out with the head lights but take a look at this wiring diagram and see if everything is wired correctly.

Also, there are some other posts that relate to this subject, try doing a search for you HU's model here on scionlife or google.

1- The wire the manual wants you to hook up is the e-brake wire.
- Most indash monitors require a ground on the brake wire for your new radio, the
reason is so the unit will only play dvds when the e-brake is on. This process can be
bypassed on most units by grounding this wire with a switch inline to turn the ground
on and off. But you can be pulled over for driving with the dvd playing.
2- The screen going dark when you turn your headlights on is most likely the
illumination wire is hooked up and so when you turn on your lights the screen dims
so it isnt so bright at night. On most units this feature can be turned off in the menu.
As the others already said I could get you more info with the brand/model of your deck.
