Default swappable filter?

Well. . . I gave that hole poorman's intake thing, and it is so prone to leaks and such, I gave up on it, as it will definitely lead to the destruction of the engine over time. Not safe IMO.

I don't really feel like paying $200+ for an intake, and have been looking at the weapon R dragon intake. . . yeah yeah, I know it is a POS. A lot of people end up with caved in foam filters. So here's my idea: Get the intake (just for the pipe with adaptors for sensors) and swap the filter on it for something better. I already have a nice cotton cone filter built for 3" pipes. Is this a good or bad idea? Can it even be done? I haven't seen the dragon intakes, and dunno if that cheesy POS is built in a way that you can only use dragon filters. . .

What do you guys think?

i'd say use a stock filter with yer setup and just cut out the center and just use the stock filtyer as a sealing ring . and the weapon r intake piping is 2.5inch i believe

Yeah, even with a filter/seal on there, it doesn't really give any significant gains. . . not as much as a shorter intake, which is what I'm after.

I did the poorman's intake and it works fine. A great way to replace the paper filter. I cut out the rubber seal and I don't have any leaks at all.

Yeah, it's not much of a hp improvement, but if you really want POWER you're probably gonna have to cough up the $$ for a nice one. I wasn't looking for power just a better filter.

How much is that intake you're talking about, though??

If it's cheap enough, go for it... I'm sure you can find a better filter that fits.

Yeah. . . the seal at the OEM filter can be managed, but I was also concerned about the seal around the new filter. . . there is a very small contact area betweent he metal ring and the pipe, since it is ribbed. It may be possible for it to eventually leak over time, and I'm not very trusting of tape as a backup.

Other's who use it may encounter zero problems. . . I personally just don't want to risk it. If it were on the exhaust side of the engine, it wouldn't be a big deal. . . but if anything were to happen on the intake side, say a rough edge on the area cut were to come loose, catastrophic results may occur. However unlikely as it may be, I just don't want to risk it, especially since the change in sound was very minimal.

The Dragon filter is about $120 shipped, but they are notorious for their foam filters collapsing; why I want to use a cotton/mesh filter instead. I just need that short pipe with good seals to attach the filter to. Plus you are right. . . I also want those power gains as well.

$120 isn't that great of a deal... I think I've seen Injen short rams for about 50 bucks more... But I know what you're saying, you already bought a filter :?

Well, I'm pretty sure most intakes use the same 3" piping... That's why they only sell those universal filters in one size.... That's just my guess.

And even if you leave the foam filter on there, I don't really think our 1.5's produce enough power to crush it...
