View Full Version : New wheels on xD and TPMS
zoltiz 08-08-2007, 07:41 PM So I installed my old tC wheels on the xD yesterday, expecting TPMS light to come on since I did not move the sensors - waiting for a new set to come in.
Drove for about 80 miles since then - the light still did not come on. I wonder if it's a feature or a glitch...
rspain85 08-08-2007, 11:43 PM If the xD has TPMS it would be news to me. You just dont get stuff like that on a 15-16k car.
SLODEANIS 08-09-2007, 12:07 AM TPMS is standard on the xD, and in fact, is required on all 2008 and later vehicles. Honda Fit has TPMS standard for 08.
rspain85 08-09-2007, 12:38 AM so you're saying when i get my 18's i need another set of sensors? that sux
SLODEANIS 08-09-2007, 12:59 AM Well, you can take the sensors out of your steelies and put them on your 18's as they will already be programmed to the TPMS computer. New sensor from Toyota/Scion are expensive. I just ordered my xD today and I am also debating the same problem.
zoltiz 08-09-2007, 01:00 AM Well, from my experience (above) if you put wheels on the car without the sensors - nothing happens - the system does not react.
Elijahtc 08-09-2007, 01:23 AM I put new wheels on my tC and didn't switch the TPMS. Eventually the light comes on and stays on but other than that it is no big deal. You just have to check your tire pressure like you are supposed to anyways, sensors or not. It doesn't hurt anything on the car as long as u check the stuff like ur supposed to.
zoltiz 08-09-2007, 01:41 AM How long did it take you until the light came on? I've driven about 80 miles so far - no light.
I got the sensors off eBay for $60. Getting them entered in the ECU will cost another $40.
Elijahtc 08-09-2007, 01:44 AM they come on around 300 miles or so i think. They didn't come on for a while but then I took a 6 hour road trip and they came on. But like I said, it doesn't affect anything. I think u can actually reset it and make the light turn off but it will just come back on. Just get used to the ligh and it won't be a problem.
zoltiz 08-09-2007, 02:14 AM Nah, I'll put the sensors in. $60 wasn't that much for the set. MSRP is $125/piece, though, but you can reuse the ones in the steelies.
Elijahtc 08-09-2007, 02:19 AM Yeah if u can find them for $60 then that is a GREAT deal.
Hey I also saw that u were on www.sxdforum.com. My name is ElijahtC on there too.
zoltiz 08-09-2007, 02:22 AM TPMS sensors show up on eBay from time to time - mostly off Camrys and such. Just don't get truck ones - there is a chance of getting the ones with a wrong angle of the valve.
I'm also a mod on yoursciontc.com if you are ever there :)
Elijahtc 08-09-2007, 02:27 AM ok cool. Never been there.
I am trying so hard to find some wheels that will fit the xD but not mess with the speedo. I don't know anything bout this stuff so it is harder for me. It is gonna be a project car for me and my girl. I kinda wanna run a bigger wheel like an 18 but I am sure they will be too heavy.
bbcxb2 08-09-2007, 04:31 AM how can that be TRD sells 18's for this car sure they will be heavier but I don't think by much maybe 2-5 lbs unless the wheels are cheap knockoff;s
zoltiz 08-09-2007, 04:35 AM I weighed these TRDs couple of years ago when they first were released for Corolla/Celica/Matrix - 50lbs with tire vs. 40lbs with tire for steelies and 41lbs with tire for tC 17s.
bbcxb2 08-09-2007, 04:39 AM your kidding 10 lbs.....darn
toeveryhour 08-10-2007, 01:23 AM changed wheels on my tc... took about 1K for the light to come on for the TPMS
zoltiz 08-10-2007, 03:48 PM I got the tC wheels installed with TPMS sensors - had Toyota re-program the ECU for the sensors - works like a charm. I might have an extra set of sensors for sale pretty soon if anyone wants them.
___xDreme___ 09-19-2007, 02:41 PM your kidding 10 lbs.....darn
I thought it would be more actually......with every inch you go up in diameter, it's a lot more material in the wheel altogether and weight goes up quickly. I realize 18's or 19's look that much sweeter, but really i wouldn't go over 17's on an xD......
___xDreme___ 09-19-2007, 02:45 PM changed wheels on my tc... took about 1K for the light to come on for the TPMS
It took less than 5 minutes for the TPMS light to come on when we put different wheels on my GF's Sienna.
I just re-set the system and turned it off. I figured people have been driving millions of years without pressure monitoring :D
I didn't realize the sensors could just be used from the stock wheels - that's good news for when we get alloys for her xD.
So how are they attached to the wheels, and where are they?
zoltiz 09-19-2007, 02:48 PM There are plenty of affordable nice looking 18s out there that weigh very close to 20lbs.
TRD 18s are an unfortunate exception.
___xDreme___ 09-19-2007, 02:52 PM I am trying so hard to find some wheels that will fit the xD but not mess with the speedo.
You just need a 5x100 bolt pattern wheel...... for 17's you need 205-45-17 tires or for 18's you need 215-35-18's and your speedo will be fine.

No, you will not be fine. These tire sizes are for xA/xB. xD stock tire is much larger.
215/45/17 and 225/40/18 should be used for the xD 17s and 18s to keep the speedo readout accurate.

Stock size is 195-50-16 last time i checked......so the sizes i gave work for plus one and plus two. The sizes you gave would certainly fill the wheelwells better, though.
zoltiz 09-19-2007, 03:37 PM Since you last checked it became 195-60-16 ;)
___xDreme___ 09-19-2007, 04:05 PM Since you last checked it became 195-60-16 ;)
Ferreal?!!?
Well like I said we haven't picked ours up yet :lalala:
:D
New xB is 205/55, right?
zoltiz 09-19-2007, 04:52 PM I think you are right about the Camry Wagon tire size ;)
___xDreme___ 09-19-2007, 05:37 PM Ooh that hurtz :P .....I actually *love* the new xB in a big way. We drove them both, and as I see it for a lousy Grand more money, the xB is just more vehicle. More space and more engine - both pretty compelling. Not to mention you can actually buy an xB with alloys and factory foglights...
Anyway my lady likes them both, but she liked the xD a little more (can't reach everything as well in the xB, being all in the middle) and aside from that she is after the max MPG. If I end up with one, though, it'll be the B :)
zoltiz 09-19-2007, 06:02 PM xB is a ton of car for the money, I just don't need that much space. I can fit a set of wheels and tires into the xD just as easily and I don't have kids/dogs/other pests to haul around. But still xB2 is a ton more car for the money, I definitely agree with that.
Sgtfluffy16 11-18-2007, 10:18 PM if your having a questions or problems with ur Tire Pressure Sensors.. or light check out my thread.. it will help. if not just PM me

hey i saw ur post.. would u like to save time and money and buy 4 more sensors 2 put in ur 2nd set of wheels.. i have 4 of them new for sale $200 and there urs.. let me know
jamesIV 11-23-2007, 10:46 PM you can disable the tpms by disconnecting the tps ecu on other toyotas, and i dont believe anything changed with this one i will look it up monday at work and pictures of its location if it works
SLODEANIS 11-24-2007, 10:28 PM Unfortunately, if you disconnect the TPMS ECU which is right behind the glove box, the warning light will flash for 1 minute then stay on...The gauge cluster detects that it isnt connected anymore. I already tried it.
Sgtfluffy16 11-24-2007, 10:49 PM hahaha.. just buy my extra set that i have for sale..
tmrepp 03-18-2008, 02:46 AM Would an ECU and TPMS sensors from a 2006 prius work in an xD? I'm thinking about having two ECUs mounted, and just switching which one is plugged in depending on what set of wheels&tires are on (summer vs winter).
Such as these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-Toyota-Prius-OEM-Tire-Pressure-Sensor-Set-LKQ_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem190206248505QQitemZ190206248505
Thanks,

edit: and sorry to bring a thread back from the dead.
Bennyboy 03-18-2008, 03:53 AM Just curious as i don't believe this has been covered yet, but lets say I'm looking to get new wheels that don't have a place for the TPMS sensors. How do these exactly work? Are they in the valve stem? Sorry that i sound pretty retarded, but i've never dealt with these types of sensors before.
tmrepp 03-18-2008, 04:02 AM Glad im not the only or with questions. Judging by the pictures, that is exactly where they go, but i wouldn't go strictly off what I say as i have no real experience with them.
Sgtfluffy16 03-18-2008, 12:27 PM Use the search button... or read my thread http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=200757&highlight=
BTW the deal with the prius TPS system is more then likely the old system (read TP through the ABS sensor) not the new system (direct readings through the valve stem) But its a good question and a good idea but you would have to get a newer TPMS ecu the one that reads through the valve stems
Bennyboy 03-18-2008, 07:21 PM So then i assume there is no extra procedures to swap over the sensors other than removing the tire?
Sgtfluffy16 03-18-2008, 07:27 PM again read the post, everytime you change wheels you need to take the sensors into the new tires or if you have a 2nd set of sensors you have to have them programed by the dealer into the TPMS ECU
Bennyboy 03-18-2008, 07:39 PM again i read your post, it doesn't say anything about removing them, it describes which one is which the older ABS one or the newer one. You also said that it was in the valve stem. So from that if I conclude that removal of the tire is required to remove the sensor?
If there was a way i could remove the sensor without having to remove the tire is what i was curious about.
zoltiz 03-18-2008, 08:34 PM Tire has to be deflated to get to the sensor and at least one side has to be taken off the rim.
Bennyboy 03-19-2008, 09:11 AM Thanks Zoltiz, the reason i asked was cause i live in a high rise condo where the parking garage has no room to keep any of my stuff especially car stuff. I want to do a drop with some wheels now thinking i could sell the stock wheels off, but i'll have to find a tire shop to do all this for me to get to the sensors at a decent price. I'm fairly new up in Seattle so, no real hook ups or anything here.
