My friend has an xA and his engine bay is looking dirty... How safe is it to spray down the engine compartment w/ diluted Simple Green and then hose it off w/ a high pressure water hose? I saw the details guy at a VW dealership do that to a Phaeton... And then he drove the car with the engine soaking wet. We're looking to do this in the next 30 minutes, so any advice would be appreciated.

as long as all electrical connections are sealed and everything else is sealed it's ok as long as the motor isn't hot

I wouldn't drown the engine bay in water, but spray some diluted simple green, scrub, then rinse it off. I get a lot of bug guts in my engine bay...

Yeah i agree, dont do it, it takes too much risk, maybe just use a rag or a large brush and wipe down the bad parts.

We hose off engines at work all the time. I have never had any trouble with any cars except the old ones with external coils that gets wet and makes it run crappy. But on any of the Scions it would not be a problem at all.

I spary mine down once a week with high pressure. Never had a problem. Make sure you let the engine cool down before you do it. Its not good for metal and plastic to cool down very quickly. What I do is sweep the car out and wash it while I'm letting the car cool down.

I have owned 3 cars and done a light simple green spray on select plastic areas and a full spray with the water hose. Works nicely.

I don't know about a pressure spray once a week, but I did mine once a month at most with no problems ever. (I was always careful to cover up electrical stuff with plastic bags... etc etc)
