View Full Version : floored my auto xB on the highway today.

Today I was headed south on I-75 and decided to see what she's got. I was cruising at about 70 when I got the wild hair, so I stomped on the pedal and about 1 min later I was cruising at 95 mph and about 4500 rpm. With the pedal to the floor she wouldn't get to 100 nor would she redline. Capital WTF.

What did you have in your xB? Are you heavy set? Did you know your car is not aerodynamic?

True. Car & Drive tested the xB up to 103mph & said that is the top speed because of aerodynamics. Maybe you live above sea level enough to kill your top speed some. :?

Also different driving techniques. Gradually add pressure and sometimes relieve some pressure on the accelerator instead of flooring it. There's something about air/fuel mix ratio that contributed to the low MPH, I think. But I'm not even an amateur on that subject so someone should fill in.

May be a dumb question, but were you driving into the wind? We have a pretty constant wind here in Lincoln, so when I drive home from work I have to work the engine just that little bit harder. On the other hand, I have had my car to 95, it was pulling harder, but it's not nearly as stable at speed as my Corvette or my old Mercedes, so I stopped right there.

To those who have gone over the 103 I said.. How do you know that the speedo is 100% right on? Im not sure how C&D gets there info, maybe a GPS tracking thing that can track your speed better then the speedo can. Maybe it was a bad day when they tested it. To many things that can play into this. Also the xB they tested was loaded up to something like $18,xxx so it had a great deal more weight to it & a auto.

I'm thinking, it's a box. On wheels. But a box. So the wind has to play into the top speed.

As an old ad with Jackie Stewart would have said about the xB, 'This is not aerodynamic'.

And the size of the engine. Not very large. Maybe it's a combo of reasons.

I had my auto box up to 110 on the way to Atlanta last month... i don't have any engine mods at all.

I wanted to get it all the way to 120, but it only went to 110 give or take 1 or 2 mph

neckbonenick
10-11-2004, 12:53 PM
well..to answer a couple questions , I only had myself and my 110 pound wife in the car and no cargo. It may have been a little breezy but during some stretches I was going slightly downhill which I thought would counter act it. Seriously though I also tried accelerating slowly which in reality would mean for about 3 or 4 mins till pedal was all the way down. Now I do have the stock 18" rims and my gas mileage is only 24 mpg, so I wonder if they didn't calibrate my speedo and I was actually going faster. But the key here is that in 4th gear the box wouldn't let me redline. If there were a mod to allow that it would be sweet.

I have an auto xB w/ 18's and it's slow as F%&# ! ! I've never been over 95, even on a trip to vegas! I once thought that I might be baby-ing the car too much, so I floored that _____ on the freeway. I was already doing 80, so I thought I would at least hit 100... Nope. It was more like

80.........81.........82.........83.........84

Geez! It took forever just to get to 90! At that pace I felt I would blow it up if I kept trying! So I said the hell with it, I just cruise the slow lane now!

Alright, I have DC headers, Blitz Exhaust, and AEM cold air intake... on i87 last week I floored it and I couldnt push past 100mph... and it was just me in the car. Im going to try again tonight on my way home from work, Id be satisfied if i could crack the century mark.

160MPH in your box!!!!

this is how you could do it for real, take a cat shot off the deck of a u.s. navy carrier and l know you go 160,170 mph,but you aint going to enjoy the stop!and then the boat will more than likely run you down if you float at all. u.s. navy aviation 63-67.

its definately only the automatics that have this low speed problem. it must be the added weight of the tranny, and the power consuming automatic. cuz i have a stick with intake & exhaust, and 18's. i've been too 110 easily, and still had alot of pedal left. i backed off at 110 cuz it was gettin scary

Maybe it's something to do with outdoor temp/humidity, elevation, or something?

The wheels have a lot to do with it... I'm rockin' 18" chromes on 225/40/18's (yes they rub) and as soon as I put them on I could feel the difference.

I know some of the NRG crew in Philly have taken their boxes up to 120 I think (two of them are stick the other one auto).

Personally I have an auto XB and have gone as fast as 110-115 without any problems. I have no engine mods and have 18's....So i dont know.. :D :D

Just my 4 cents!

It's not the Auto tranny, it's those heavy ___ wheels. I do 80-90 every day, traffic permitting. 110 is my top, and it was a little downhillish. But 100 ain't a problem. I often get on the freeeway at Lakeshore in Oakland and it's a pretty steep climb. The Box just shoots right up it... I can be doing 80 by the top...

hey nick its john. I met you in clearwater, i was the bsp xb. Anyway, I got mine up to 107 which is as fast as it would let me go. than again i drive the 5 speed if that matters. it is actually quite an intersting ride since bricks were not made to go that fast, but surprisingly i wasnt all over the road like i had expected.

If I wanted to go over 100 I wouldn't by a box to do it.

Now to answer your question more fully. What was the temperature outside. This will also kill top end the warmer it gets.

110 this past sunday. Many people can vouch that too, although they probably will deny cruising alongside of me.

The engine sounds like its going to blow past 100, and the wind noise is intense!

chadfo

I've had mine to 105 according to the speedo.

There are many factors that will affect top speed which is why you see so many different speeds posted.

There's air density, temperature, weight of the vehicle, power output of the engine(they all come out of the factory slightly different), and the diameter of the tire just to name a few. Keep in mind the larger the tire the lower the speed will show on your speedometer because you are actually covering more distance for the same revolutions.

I'm not going to the get into the effect of boasting on the performance of a car or the big one that got away when no one else was around to witness it. :)

you changed your rims and tires to a bigger size ? that could contribute to the error on the speedo bc your overall diameter maybe different from the stock so the speedo maybe read slower than it actually it.

Hah, I just hit 100on the freeway between offramps. SOme guy in an older accord. Beige, with a white rear lip that was huge and flapping in the wind. :P   It probably cost him quite a bit in drag... Wasn't really like racing or anything and we really weren't going too much faster than the few other cars on the road. All in good fun

You can do it with no mods. There is a button on your shifter that says ODO push that and you'll hit redline...........of course doing so at the speed you were at will probably destroy the motor in a second

thanks 2min0to60 for thinking of somthing that is undoubtedly the right answer. I feel like such a retard but I am more relieved that i can't break the 100 barrier cuz I forgot to "push the button" I think I will call that my "SuperBoost Button"

What is the deal with that guage up there? Does anyone know about it? I heard of some folks with nB's that 'traded' the tack with the speedo, and made up new faces to go with it. I hear it's not that hard to do, just switching wires...

I think that's what up with that gauge.

112 on a flat straight surface

123 from flat straight surface to steep downhill grade

Both of those speeds make me nervous.

those wheels/tires are about 25.1" in diameter the stock is 23.7" that is enough of a difference to change your speedo, odometer, mileage, power, in other words the pick up and go got up and went

If your speedometer was not recalibrated when you put on the 18" wheel, you may be going faster. Check out this page and put in the stock wheel size.

Top speed is affected by several things. Gearing, horsepower, and aerodynamics. For a certain shape, it will take so many horsepower to cruise at a certain speed. If you increase the gearing you are not going to go much faster if the car was designed to use 100 horsepower (hypothetical) at 100 mph at 5000 rpm. If you up the gear ratio, you will be making less horsepower at 100mph, and therefore might not be able to achieve that speed. I think the manual cars have a lower final gear, which would allow it to run the engine a little higher, make a little more power at the same speed, and therefore go even faster. But there is a point when the aerodynamics of the car prevent the car from going faster, a pure horsepower to wind resistance relationship.

I have had mine up to about 105, but think it could go faster, and after my escort 8500 x50 and escort zr3 install, hopefully i can make it go 105 all the time.

I have done about 101, maybe less due to accuracy, going downhill on a strech of highway. xB was pretty loaded; my girlfriend and college friend, each of us at about 115, and maybe 40 pounds of cargo. Never tried it alone though.

It only takes longer to get to the speed with more stuff on the car but I can't get it above 115 on the speedo at 4800rpm. I'm not telling where I do it because I hit the century mark at least twice a day in the surrounding states.

I had my box up around 105 mph at 5000 ft and could have gone faster, but I only have 125 miles on it so didn't want to push it too much. I believe I was actually going up hill too. Sometimes in the moutains it is hard to tell if it is uphill or downhill. I looked at my topo map and it is uphill (1% grade). I had a geo metro a few years back, had that thing with the needle almost back to 0mph. The speedo on it went up to 90mph. It was only a 3 banger (yes I was going downhill). So different from my VW GTI 1.8T. Had that thing going 135mph, and it would have gone much faster.
