Default Looks are on the outside.......

Basing a decision solely off the outward appearance of the XB, which do you like better. The Original Gen1 or the Gen2?

Obviously there have been other mods to improve on the XB, but not taking those into consideration, I have to go with the classic original look because it was such a head turner when it came out and I really like the box. Im not a fan of the rounded corners on the new XB and I think Scion is drifting toward the rest of the market and its disappointing to me.

Any thoughts?

I the look of the new xB. So much so that I was just at the dealership cruising the lot looking for a white one until a sales person flagged me down. Gave me a ton of compliments on my choice of wheels and grill. After I drove away I realized I can't yet part with my baby. But, someday, the time will come; and a new xB will be in my driveway.

What I liked about the original XB is that it was a bold design unlike anything else out at the time. Since it cam out others have gone to a look closer to that end of the spectrum and with the new XB its swinging back towards the looks of the rest of the market. Its just no linger a truely original design and so i agree with pooder. Its looking more frumpy.

I LOVE the original look much better than the newer one. The 1st gen Box is just so cool...people may hate, but I wouldnt own any other car at this point in my life.

QFT.

i think scion really blew it with the new cars.

the worst part about the xB2, imo, are the hood/headlight/grille lines. the whole front clip looks to me like it was designed by about 7 different people (in dark rooms with no phone or internet). that huge gap between the headlights, and 'afterthought' grille would take a bit of bodywork to fix. it could have been solved easily with the right grille/bumper if they had ended the hood above the headlights like on the t2B.

I think a grille can make/break a car, and i don't think i'm alone. mb/bmw anyone?

xB2 = major mood kill, imo, I wouldn't be so completely opposed to it if they had at least given it a different moniker.

As quick as we are to blame Scion, remember, Scion listened to the buying public. I think society should share in the blame as well. Scion is here to make money, not be cool or buck any trends.

I also think this new xb will be a better seller than the original. Why? Because it is more mainstream looking, and since most people are herd followers, more people will be buying a more orthodox looking car.

So true. I think that's part of what is such a downer for me. With the classic xB, i was under the impression that they were here to 'buck'

They were. They did. Now its time to play it safe.

Thats why I bought when I did...I knew the original design was NOT going to be around for too long.

I'm not an xB owner, but I can say:

The new xB looks to be better/nicer in terms of interior spacing/ergonomics. That 2.4L engine is super durable ... not to take anything away from the 1.5 , but the 2.4 is proper given the bigger size of the new xB, hauling stuff in the back, etc.

The 1st Gen xB was/is an origional design... that was like "WHAT" !!!! Yet "Cool" !!!
The 1.5L engine is more efficent, better MPG's .. then the new xB. Also, retail pricing on the xB + xA is/was great! Now, in coming out with 2nd Gen models.. Toyota figures the models will sell, and the price of admission goes up accordingly another 5-7%

Seems like Toyota looked at what other cars had the 1.5L engine.. and got rid of them(xB, xA, Echo) ... but still has the Yaris - reason behind that was it was probably cutting into there HYBRID car sales, so as a car company- some changes needed to be made to maximize profit/sales returns

The rumored Toyota Lumino (not Chevy Lumina) looks better. The front of the car flows smoothly throughout the vehicle; the xB2's front end doesn't. It is soon to be JDM equivalent of the xB2. Maybe wait when Scion decides to get rid of the current front end and replace it with the Lumino's.

+1!! redesign from the cab forward and you're in business...the xb2 does have potential from the windshield back.

I think you nailed it: that's how the new xB looks to me -- like they played it safe. Bummer, man . . . .

I think if the xB2 had a shorter front end, and was proportionally smaller, I would like it more.

The main thing that got me, was how much bigger it was. I think the classic is the perfect size. Maybe even could have a few inches chopped off the top ;)

I think the 2nd gen bB in Japan is still my favorite right now though.

i'll take the inside of the xb2 and the outside of my BOP xB and that would be very very nice!

IMHO i believe both have the Ups and Downs. I myself own both the Gen1 xB and co-owner of the Gen 2xB both in White. If you really hate the body lines/grille of the new xB, then do what most of us have done with our cars and modify them to the point where you like them. Did anyone like a stock height Gen 1 xB? I doubt it, thats why we lowered it. Though one body line is annoying on the new xB (The body line on the hood) it serves a purpose as a visual aid for the front end. if there was no body line, the hood and front end would disappear and it would seem like you would be driving a car without a front end (its how you sit in your car and the vision you have to the hood). But since that body line is there, it gives the illusion of how the front end is. I know i am babbling about a body line , but still, the car is seriously not that much bigger than the gen 1 xB, its just certain body lines (or Lack of due to the rounded edges) make the car seem bigger. We all know that the "fastest route from point A to B is a Straight line." Think of that metaphor for the Gen 1 xB body Lines and think of "taking the scenic route" for the Gen 2 xB body Lines. Make sense? haha prolly not.

scion is not going to change the xb2 to the new lumino , and if they did it'd be like the 08 changes for the tC , too little too late .

but i'm sure the front clips will be a very popular item for tuners ( of which there are very few) of the xb2 to buy.
