View Full Version : First mod!
captainlaziness 08-18-2007, 02:39 AM We did our first mod to Nicole's xD tonight. It's a super easy, super cheap (free), three step process.
Step 1:
-get ahold of the black tape on the B-pillar
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i239/captainlaziness/xd/photoshoot8-17-07002.jpg
Step 2:
-peel

Step 3:
-crinkle up black tape and admire the new look

I think you should reword the "we" in your write up. As I remember it I peeled off most of the vinyl, you took pics. :P
dugzilla 08-18-2007, 02:58 AM oh snap! Well, he is captainlaziness after all, lol.
captainlaziness 08-18-2007, 02:59 AM Hey, I did one of 'em.
LiTtLeDeViAnT 08-18-2007, 03:01 AM Yeah and you complained the whole time about it messing up your nails :D

awww how cute! As Dane Cook says, I love nothing fights!
L4rry_B1rd 08-18-2007, 03:11 AM This def makes the xD look 100 times better... never liked this mod on the xB, but Im loving it on the xD.
Good stuff
zoltiz 08-18-2007, 03:25 AM It almost works on a dark colored car - will look like butt on a light colored ones.
dugzilla 08-18-2007, 04:06 AM I think it looks great, and would look just as good on a lighter car.
xD-Man 08-18-2007, 04:49 AM I wish someone would try this on a light colored xD so I could see what it looks like before I do mine. Maybe it's time for a photochop. :)
zoltiz 08-18-2007, 05:11 AM It will break the line that was created by visually connecting the windows and will make the car look taller. If that's the look you are after - full speed ahead.
toyoda 08-18-2007, 03:59 PM That does look really nice on the xD. Like the car should come this way.
KINGxOFxSKA 08-18-2007, 07:45 PM i must say that is a nice improvement for a free mod. :)
toyoda 08-19-2007, 08:29 PM Kudos for who ever first figured out you can peel those off.
LiTtLeDeViAnT 08-20-2007, 02:18 AM I think someone with a xB figured it out, we just started peeling and hoped it was the same for the xD.
zoltiz 08-20-2007, 02:23 AM It'd been "figured out" way before xB came out. There is a reason that black vinyl is there...

and that reason is?
zoltiz 08-20-2007, 04:21 PM Purely visual perception stuff - makes the car look lower, more streamlined. But if you are into tall 4x4 look - knock yourself out. Chevy HHR WTF ;)
Skillz44 08-20-2007, 04:49 PM Its amazing how the small details make a difference. Its nice, so much cleaner!
captainlaziness 08-21-2007, 05:12 AM Purely visual perception stuff - makes the car look lower, more streamlined...
Yeah, I can see that. It doesn't make that noticable of a difference right now, but the (taller) effect may be exagerated once the windows have a nice dark tint. If it looks funky, re-wraping the pillars would be a fairly simple procedure.
zoltiz 08-21-2007, 05:29 AM Cap, you don't have to worry about it with darker car. Try the same thing with red or silver or white - and say hello to HHR :)
captainlaziness 08-21-2007, 05:44 AM I feel dirty admiting it......
but I kinda like the HHR's look.
Gortok 08-26-2007, 08:52 PM 'cause after you go tint your windows, you'll be wishing you'd left it on there....

you should feel dirty! lol sorry I just had to say it :P

In 2 pages of posts only one person agrees with me. And it happened to be Greg :)
bBlover 08-26-2007, 10:30 PM Looks good! I have this done on my BOP xB. And I don't think it really changed the look of my car @ all.
scionxAchic 08-28-2007, 05:28 AM that looks great!!! wow, I can't believe how much better it looks :D

+1
This is especially true for the xB1. Never made sense to me why someone would "un-design" the car. The black tape is there to visually unify the side windows. This helps ehance the roof and shoulder lines of the car making the car appear lower and longer.
In fact, newer car designs have been trying to diminish the B-pillars so they can get a sleeker coupe-like effect like this:
http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/sc/32329562-2-440-SS22.jpg
or this:
http://www.egmcartech.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/rendering_four_door_coupe_volkswagen.jpg
By removing the tape, you are essentially interrupting the lines of the car and adding emphasis or highlighting a part of the car that really isn't special. Same thing with adding CF B-pillar appliques or worse yet - chrome. To me, it's just "modding" for the sake of modding.
Although, I admit, it's not as bad on the xD as on the xB1, but I still wouldn't do it.
xBster 08-31-2007, 01:32 AM it looks good un-taped....now let's tint those windows...
azepolyn 09-01-2007, 04:30 AM I've pictured it in my mind, I went with the white, and I can't see it working. On a dark car it seems to be pretty decent
the HHR is kinda like the xB1 in the respects that its a different look, geared toward a specific taste and style. I've come to like them, good friend of mine has a black one, chrome trip, looks sharp, and they are crazy good on the insurance. So much so I almost bought one instead of the xD. Now who feels dirty?

Hahaha! You got busted! It looks really, really good.
optikinescant 09-05-2007, 05:21 PM Looks good on your xd, I've seen it done on a lot of the newer xb's on which I'm just not digging it - work's here though, kudos.

Good stuff
you took the words out of my mouth...i think this is the stupidest mod for the xB unless you are running a black one, but on the xD it looks alot better...just still not sure if i like the xD or not...i am on the look out for one on the road...anyone got rims on their xD yet???
YELOSUB 08-31-2008, 09:48 PM Here's the RS1 Hot Lava without the the black vinyl...
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb107/yelosub/IMG_2773-1.jpg
Skillz44 09-01-2008, 07:08 AM So, I peeled it off my doors... as good as it looks without the black.... the burn through on the clear coat I found under neath took away any excitement I had.
Its on both front doors and I'm very disappointed that they cover their mistakes with removable tape rather than fixing it as they do any other areas that wouldn't be acceptable.
I've heard someone else had the same issue and it was repainted by warranty.
So, I'm going to the dealership with my fingers crossed!

First impression.... Honda Fit. Not into this tape removal thing, if you like it, it's your car/money so go crazy. I'd like to see someone with a white one and dark tint do it though, I'd get a good laugh out of it.
CaliforniaGuy007 09-14-2008, 06:22 PM Does anyone know where I can purchase this tape vinyl stuff? I have a 1996 corolla with just plain old paint on the pillar and really like the flush look of my scion. Thanks.

He can pretty much make vinyl for anything

Cool, thanks! I've been looking everwhere for this. A few months ago I spoke with the parts department at the dealship and they had no clue what I was talking about.

Hey I just saw that you were in Az...It would be easy for you just to drive out to Randy's house and he could cut the vinyl and install it right there...Just a thought...
turner 09-23-2008, 12:43 AM I found this pic in the wheel and tire section. I don't know whose it is but people were wanting to see one in white.

I personally don't think it looks bad. Not sure why everybody's pants are gettin soiled but anywho.... I also think the orange one looks _____in.

Honda Fit? I don't think so! Not sure why you think by me removing the tape turns my car into a Fit look-a-like...If i'm not mistaken, the fit HAS window tape/vinyl!

And for the record, I think it looks CLEAN with the tape removed on the white one!
turner 09-23-2008, 02:23 AM I love it without the vinyl. Doin mine tomorrow. i will post pics. as well as other things i've done today.... and sayin it looks like a fit is just dumb.... the fit has the vinyl as well. my best friend bought his wife a fit and i looked today. it has vinyl too.

The Fit's... release color or whatever you want to call it looks the same. The first time I saw a fit was the blue color and the orange one, so it looks like the Fit because taking that off shows more color, and the angle of the picture made it look like it.
katchkillah 10-30-2008, 06:14 AM hey that's me the white xd. thanks for posting it up. not for cosmetics i yanked it, just not into having adhesive on my paint long term.
