View Full Version : what MPG do you get on xB 5spd?

I am just about to buy the Scion xB 5spd, and I would like to know what the gas mileage is "in the real world" before I commit. Toyota claims 31/35 or 30/33 (depending on where I look), but I am wondering what people are actually experiencing.

I've searched the archives, and found relevant posts strung around, but often there are no details included, such as manual / automatic, etc.

So, if you have a 5spd xB with no mods, will you please post your avg. gas mileage? And perhaps the driving conditions (city / highway, etc.)

Thanks!
Scott

Scott,
To tell you the truth i usually get 29/30 mpg driving 50/50 highway city driving. And that includes some aggressive acceleration from 1st to 3rd gear. I am driving a manual transmission with AEM intake. Although i don't drive aggressive all the time i generally get 290 miles and the gas light comes on. then it takes 9 gallons depending. I've gotten 33-35 mpg when i drive without a leadfoot. Try it out and see what you come up with. It's hard not to drive with a leadfoot :) ..

I'm getting 28 real-world MPG in my stick xB. I keep careful records of fuel and mileage. My wife and I drive with a moderate foot, with mostly in-town suburban driving.

Your real MPG will almost always be worse than the estimates. It's the nature of the test cycles they use.

I have 4500 miles on my 5 speed xb and I get around 27-29 miles and thats mostly 50/50 driving conditions. What I do notice is if you keep your speed around 70-75 on the freeway you get better gas milage, go higher, get worse. I only got 30 mile to the gallon once and that is when I was keepin it around 70-75 on the freeway. I also use 76 gasoline.

I'm averaging 33 MPG. I do about 30% street and 70% Highway. I use the A/C about 25% of the time...usually on the first fan speed setting. I don't have a heavy foot and when I drive on the freeway, it's usually at about 75 MPH. This is all stock (well, I got the short shifter and TRD springs but I dont' think that makes a difference)

I just recently changed to a larger wheel and tire combination so I expect to the decrease as my mileage will be showing lower and the extra force needed to push a wider tire.

On my best run, I did 35.41 MPG or thereabouts. I usually get the low gas light (which means a little less than 2 Gallons left) when I hit about 310-320 Miles. I've been pretty anal when it comes to tracking fuel consumption. For city streets I usually shift a little bit before 3000 RPM and cruise in 5th gear when I have long straights with no stoplights.

if i'm correct... if u're getting only 290 miles to a tank..how can u be getting 30mpg? isn't our xB tank 11.9 gallons (full) if u divide 290 by 11.9...it's only 24.4 MPG. correct me if i'm wrong...

As for me...i have little over 4000 miles on mine...and i'm average about 28 MPG...not quite 30MPG as everyone claims...i have A/T and yes...i'm a little A/T racer...haha...O/D is killing my MPG...

 I get really lousy MPG, but my 16's are about 3/4" or so taller than stock and I'm pretty racey around town....just love all those g's that manual trans gives ya....lol.
Anyway, I usually get about 225 miles between fill-ups, usually have the A/C on (central valley heat) and mostly around town driving. So I guess actually I really dont know but its better than my 64 Chevelle SS (about $5.00 per day to and from work, and thats only 4 miles away). So I'm not really complaining. See Ya, Louie 8)

Well, most of us don't drive until the tank is completely empty... To calculate the MPG, you take the miles on the odometer (e.g., 290) and divide by the amount of gas you pump in (10 gallons). That way, you don't have to drive to 0 gas to calculate. When the gas light comes on, you probably have a gallon and a half left.

Say you have a tank full and you drive 'til the needle is somewhere in the middle. Fill up the tank. Say it takes 4 gallons to fill it up. And the odometer says 120 miles. That's 30MPG.

Well, after my first 220 miles in pure city traffic, I've achieved 27.8mpg. Hopefully it'll go up a little when it warms up here (a month or so).

Yea, because I bumped the thread. I try to follow my motto (whihc is in my sig BTW), so I'd rather add to this thread then start another new one.
