Default Question for Those that have over 35K miles???

I'm asking people that have over 35K miles whether or not they had to have the VVTI gear TSB thing done under warranty. Is this gonna happen to all the vehicles in that VIN range? If so can the repair be done prior to it actually failing?
My main concern is that my xB warranty will run out long before I reach the 60K mile mark. I'm not driving it much anymore and have under 2 years left. Thanks in advance!

i would say the dealer would have a problem fixing something that hasent broken yet and charge it to warranty.
im sure you could pay to have it done.

what is the TSB for this problem, ie: year/vin.
ive heard alot of people talk about having that broblem and im also concerned.

Should have bought the extended warranty if you are paranoid about nothing.

the toyota powertrain warrenty superceades the 3yer / 5yr bumper to bumper warrenty. if this part fails after your warrenty runs out, but you are still within 60k miles / 60 month of use, the dealer must replace this at no charge to you, based on your complaint of the part having failed, so it is actually not necessary to buy the extended warrenty to have this part covered... even if you are paranoid about nothing, this may be a big problem for some, and i thought it was a legit posting, no reason for rudeness if you have nothing usefull to contribute.

Thanks IH8ONYU , My concern is having this part go bad anytime after the 5 year/ 60 K warranty runs out. I'd prolly do the work myself so it's not a real biggie. I mostly want to hear from others that had this issue bypass them. I'd be very curious to see what percentage of cars in the affected VINs needed this VVTi thing replaced.

Old Yeller: What were the symtoms that made you know that it needed replacing?

Great info, and will keep this in my file for future use if needed. Thanks

Ok my car is finally done (4 days later) and when I saw it yesterday, the entire head was off the car so I'm not sure you want to do the TSB yourself.

I was like... wow thats what everything looks like and took a peek.

Sorry you were one of the affected ones. It seems like if it goes bad it's right around the 30K mark on average so maybe it will pass mine up.

I'm curious why the head was off??? According to the instructions, only one cam has to be removed. Swap the gear and re-assemble. 1.2 hrs. of labor. I know removing the head and putting it back on would be way more than 1.2 hrs. labor.
Did you get a printout of the amount of billed hrs. of labor they were hitting Toyota up for? Heck that involves more parts too like a new head gasket ect....

I got a call at 3:30pm that it was ready and I was already at work for the night - I told them if they didn't have it ready before noon I couldn't pick it up until Friday afternoon (which is true).

They had her 4 days, I have no idea in the end what the heck was replaced but I will be asking a LOT of questions because I thought the TSB only said 1.2 but the service manager told me there was a lot more involved

When I stopped by yesterday to swap into a more comfortable rental is when I saw the head off, spark plugs out, etc etc

I can't wait to find out more details of what they did to your poor box. Later if I do it myself I'm just buying the gear and swapping it out. If the head has to come off I'll have some port work done for better flow.

Mine went out at around 30k also. They have to take the engine apart to fix it, mine took 1 and 1/2 days to fix.
I have 30k on it since and so far no problems.
