Default Stay Alert For Potholes!

Or else you'll be out $168 dollars (or more.)

I was driving home Wednesday night and hit a big nasty pothole in a construction area (a friend mentioned it might have even been an open sewer grate or manhole.) I couldn't swerve into the other lane so I hit it with both driver's side tires. As I slowed at the next light I could hear a tire leaking, turns out it was the driver's rear. I put on the spare (easy to do even with the subwoofer installed, in case anybody was wondering) and drove my other car until I got the new tire today. I just got back from the tire shop, and looking at the old tire, the puncture was about an inch long on the sidewall behind the rim protector. I couldn't see any damage with the tire on the rim, but it wasn't holding air. The impact must have squeezed the sidewall between the tire trad and wheel rim. Fortunately, the rim came out mostly intact, with only a small nick on the edge.

No, actually it didn't, but I drove less than a mile before I stopped.

I got a good deal on the tire: $150, then the other $18 was for mounting, balancing, tire disposal, etc. The same tire from TireRack would have cost me $160+ just for the tire.

If I was replacing all four, I wouldn't get the Potenza RE92s. You can find plenty of better, cheaper tires at a lower price.

Actually replacing the tires would be a good thing. It would allow me to upgrade the rims my wife scratced. I'd like some 18 or 19 inch wheels. Might as well replace the rims with the tires. At the current rate, I'll need new rubber in less than a year. Yay!!...new rims!

Are you still rolling the stock tires? If I popped one, I'd definitely use it as an excuse to change. I don't want anything bigger than the stock 17's and frankly I really like the stock rims. Especially knowing that having the low-pro tires that come stock probably increase the chance of a flat, the last thing I would do is make the tires even more low-profile. But I hear you - these are some expensive junky tires.

On a related note, for people who are replacing their stock tires (not wheels), what are you guys doing with the tires? Holding onto them for a rainy day? I was wondering if a used tire shop or something would give me anything for them - only 100 miles on them so far.

Yeah, I thought of that. I like the stock wheels too. I've thought about getting 18s or 19s, but it doesn't seem practical to do so around here. Plus it's the difference between spending <$200 and probably >$1000. For now, I'll bite the bullet and just stick with a stock tire.

kinda off topic for this thread........but when you do take the spare out witht he subwoofer, do you just pot your backseats down, put the subs on the backseat, and open the spare?? cuz that's what i was thinking you have to do to get the spare out.

No. You slide the cargo mat (if you have one) out from under the sub, then turn the clips on the rigid cover, then starting on the driver's side you pull up on the cover and slide it out from under the sub. You don't have to do anything to the subwoofer.

See... for everyone who says the stock sub is a ripoff (which it is if you have the dealer install it, maybe), I'm still saying that the fit and finish make it worth twice as much. IT just looks soooo good snugged up to the side of the car like that. Mine is still in the box (going in tomorrow) but I'm so happy to be able to have a pretty kickin' sub and yet still have a trunk left. The space savings and ease of use at certain times (flat tire time for instance) make it worth retail or more.

Twice as much? At that point, you are getting into near the same price point as having a custom sub sank into the area beside the spare tire. Much cleaner looking and preserves the already small trunk.
