Has anyone done the cat replacement due to the stench? I read on consumerguideauto that it is a common problem with the 05 models. I notice it if i go thru the gears and then come to a stop or slow speed, oh man its like i have these invisible people in my car farting taco farts or something.


If you happen to have a 2005 Scion tC, there's a TSB on the catalytic converter for "rotten egg smell" [scroll down to Reliability].

never noticed this problem on my 05, and i have my occations when i beat on it.

and the car even has a primary and secondary cat, so it shouldn't be a problem.

 

I had an 05 and when I would haul **** and then bring it to slow speeds...I could smell the funk of Sulfer.....eh..it didnt bother me to much as i just battled it out eating taco bell.

The smell eventually left my car.

 

couldn't that also be clutch or brake pad smell?

I don't think I've smelled either (I suppose that's a good thing, or maybe it just means I'm not driving hard enough mwhaha. ok.) , so maybe I'm talking out of my ****!

yeah, good point, he could just be smelling his burnt clutch and rubber.

 

There was discusions about this many moons ago. the cat puts off some nasty sulfur smell.

and it is indeed the sulfery rotten egg fart smell of a cat

 

the 5 speed sucks to drive so i got an auto, plus its my "stuck in traffic every day" car

I am not calling anyone stupid for buying a 5speed, i am simply saying that I didnt like the way it drove, and I bought the car as a beater/commuter anyways, not as some sort of sports car. (because its not)

Stop trying to make this into another pimply faced argument about auto vs 5spd and get a life and grow up.

 

Why get so defensive? All he said is the auto is better for him for everyday driving/stuck in traffic, which is the exact reason I bought my auto.

 

Unless his last line "butt" is directed at you. Now that's just childish.

 

I know that smell but I always thought it was the brakes ? So what does the TSB do, they replace both cats ?
