How many miles on the box? If i had to guess its your drive belt. The xB is notorious for having squeeky belt syndrome. I have replaced mine 3 times and the GFs twice to get rid of that damn squeek.

Its not that uncommon to hear of a low mileage box having issues with the belt at 15K miles. You also have to take into account how old the belt is to begin with. If it bugs you that much i would try replacing the belt. Dealership OEM belt is $35 i believe and PepBoys has one for $25. The PepBoys wears too fast and you stuck with a squeek all over again. There is a how to here on SL to replacing the drive belt.

Could you please direct me to the link? I have searched with no sucess. I also have the squeeks. I took my xB to the dealer and they said it was the alterantor. They replaced it under warranty, but it still squeeks. But the bigger issue is now my Serpentine belt for the fan/alt has a tear in it and it fall off. xB only has 35000 miles on it too...kinda short life. I am going to replace the belt but would love some help installing it. How does the belt wrap around each pulley. Maybe a picture or drawing since I never looked before. Thanks in advance!

Also, with the belt off I spun a pulley with no grooves under the alt (sorry for the bad description) and it made the squeeky noise. Maybe it is this that is causing everyone's problems.

I looked too, and really cant find it. LOL

Basically there is one bolt on the underside of the alt that needs to be broken loose. If you have already had it to the shop to replace the alt then they probably have broken loose the bolt for you.

The bolt is a 14MM that sits under the alt. Then there is the 14 MM that sits on the top of the alt. This is the one that you can adjust the tension on the belt. Once you have both of those loose, then its just removing the old belt and installing the new. Study how the belt goes around the pullys, as there is only one way to correctly route the belt.

If your bottom is giving you fits, then you will need to remove the passenger wheel and inner wheel well. Its really not that hard as the plastic piece is just popped in. You will then need to get a socket and decent extension in there on that 14MM bolt and break it loose. I used a 3/8s drive and stood on it to get it to break loose. Here again, if you have already had the alt replaced you may not have to go this route. You may just need a short socket and rachet to back off the 14 MM bolt.

Good Luck.

^^^^^^^ I recently had to do this with my car. Its a simple quick fix, my xA only has 28K. The belt has been annoying me for about 3K, so i got off my lazy A$$ and did something about it.

Well...an Update. I found out the pulley is actually the water pump. I noticed the water pump's pulley is very loose and squeaks when you turn it. So, I replaced the belt anyways in about 30 minutes. Not too bad. Next, I came back outside and noticed a nice big pool of coolant/water under the xB. Upon further investigation it turned out to be the water pump. It was leaking from right behind the loose pulley when the belt was under tension. I am going to be calling the dealership tomorrow to put the Platinum warranty to work.

I know this is an old thread, but one safe rule for any FWD car is when you change the belt, change the water pump at the same time.

I think you are confused with a timing belt and a fan belt.

I agree with you, if you have a car with a timing belt, change the water pump while you are in there. The Scion xB has a timing chain, so no need.

This thread was about the fan belts.
