View Full Version : 25 dollar short ram now with pics
jspectoaster 09-22-2007, 09:18 PM so i decided to pull apart the air box yesterday and discovered that there is enough of a lip after the maf sensor to clamp on a 25$ autozone cone filter.all i need to do now is make some sort of bracket.thing sounds cool as hell
jspectoaster 09-22-2007, 10:11 PM pics!!!

azepolyn 09-22-2007, 10:29 PM Nice, my brother and I made the same observation almost immediately. Curious, you already did the measuring, whats the size of the piping?
jspectoaster 09-22-2007, 10:32 PM 3 1/2
bbcxb2 09-23-2007, 02:25 AM hmm cool but would rather run a K and N filter
jspectoaster 09-23-2007, 04:34 AM perhaps a name brand could give me 5-10 more horsepower
rspain85 09-23-2007, 08:17 PM perhaps a name brand could give me 5-10 more horsepower
or perhaps a name brand filter would do a better job at filtering out dirt from your engine than a autozone special. besides, the stock intake/airbox is so well engineered that you prolly only gain 1, maybe 2 hp. thats not enough to notice and to me, isnt enough to risk sucking dirt into your engine.
hXcdi3hard 09-26-2007, 04:59 AM people dont put ram air filters on there car just for the 1-5 hp gain...its mainly cause it give it a lower tone when accelerating....i love the sound of intake...the factory box just doesnt sound cool..
thanks jspectoaster im gonna do this when i pick up my xD

exactly what I was thinking
XtraDeviant 09-28-2007, 04:30 PM good stuff. i wonder if the HKS mushroom filter (i call it the boob filter) fit on that?
Then I'll have an HKS intake!!!
zoltiz 10-01-2007, 12:11 AM Tried the $25 short ram tonight - thanks for the tip on the disassembling the airbox - somehow I missed it myself.
Sound difference is not as distinct as I had with couple of other engines I played with, but still kinda fun.
Time to make a bracket to keep that thing in place. So far it's held with a zip-tie to the battery tie-down - does not move much, but can definitely be better.
jspectoaster 10-01-2007, 04:16 AM i made a bracket gotta get a pic up it was super easy
azepolyn 10-02-2007, 05:08 AM sooo ... revisiting this, how's it working out? Any CEL's or ... heaven forbid ... the aforementioned debris? :P
jspectoaster 10-02-2007, 05:52 AM none of the above 500 miles or so now still happy as a clam
HareBrained 10-04-2007, 04:47 AM I did this with my Mini. The intake sounds was great. I've had other Mini drivers ask me what I did because they wanted theirs to sound like mine.
I used a Weapon R kit for an EG Civic. It came with a 4" bent and straight polished tube, a silicone reducer, a silicone breather hose, and an oil-impregnated filter, all for $35. I simply cut the tube with a little straight and a little curve and bolted it in. Worked much better than stock and I sincerely doubt that much worse than the $240 AEM "tuned" intake. Like the xD, the Mini filter and intake are front right. And like the xD, total length needs to be less than a foot. I wouldn't hesitate to do exactly the same for the xD.
I think you did a great job.
MasterFramer 10-24-2007, 07:09 AM This doesn't void your warranty? Sorry for the newb question.
Also, can you post your bracket picture? Thanks.
pyrocuervo 11-02-2007, 07:43 AM Finally got the black sand xd already dissasembled it for sound system wiring/upgrade...I have a blazer/ram k&n filter that is larger than the cone I will definitely try this in the morning!!!

How did this work out?
pyrocuervo 11-05-2007, 06:56 PM It went good! prettymuch took up all the space available, but it does respond quicker and has a more aggressive sound. plus looks good too!!! lol. sorry no pics yet some douchbag stole my camera!
i put a K&N modified filter on my xd and it sounds and runs great
blown_xa 12-15-2007, 09:28 PM cool I saw this and went right to Pep-boys!! LOL should work fine!
blown_xa 12-15-2007, 11:29 PM oh... also i will do a few dyno pulls completly stock, and when the car is on the dyno im going to remove factory air-box and put the cone filter on... then a couple more pulls. Im sure the guys at PTuining need a basline run for a completly stock xD. Also this will confirm certain opinions on this mod. I personally think it will open up a good 4whp, maybe more.
Elijahtc 12-24-2007, 01:13 AM any word on those dyno pulls? I installed the exact same filter and made a makeshift bracket too. Sounds really good and returned the little get up and go that we lost when we put the heavy 18" wheels on the D. ha ha
sturack1 06-03-2008, 07:44 PM I can't believe I am asking this, but how do you remove the two bolts holding the bottom half of the air box? I broke one of my ratchets last night trying to undo them. Any suggestions?!
MaxiVisVires 06-04-2008, 05:09 AM What size cone did you guys go with?
Just did this today to my Xd and so far I love it. Very easy install, took maybe 20 - 30 mins. or so tops. I used the Auto Zone/Spectra Performance filter as well (part number 8136) and it fit perfectly. The tone is deeper and mellow now, I really like it. We'll see if it makes any difference for milage. Attached a few pics of the install :)

pickledchang 06-06-2008, 03:21 AM thats EXACTLY what i did, but i went with the silver filter, heh.
jspectoaster 06-06-2008, 06:17 AM wow its back.watch out for the spectre filters they rust up pretty quick i finally upgraded to a k&n and made it a cold air

sturack1 06-20-2008, 02:46 PM I couldn't get a 3" coupler to work for the MAF - the 3.5" works fine. Did you have problems with the 3"?
rhino74s 07-02-2008, 01:13 AM Great job with this guys!
I got a Fujita 3 1/2" inlet filter, goes right on in place of the stock airbox and works great!
Also found a 1" nylon plug at Lowe's that fits perfectly in place of that goofy handle.

XLR8R 08-12-2008, 05:44 AM yeah i am def gonna do this soon. i found a pretty cool idea to replace my handle plug too. ill post pics tomorrow.
Cylon_xD 08-12-2008, 03:37 PM Hey, I've been wanting to know, what the heck IS that odd handle-looking thingy on the hose, anyway? Is it some sort of resonator to quiet the air flow sound, or maybe a trap to catch condensation from the input air, since it slopes downward?
XLR8R 08-12-2008, 04:01 PM idk what it is but i figured it was just a really lame plug. so i figured if there is gonna be a hole there might as well use it to get some sort of extra air flow.

sorry if the pics look off. my camera was droped and knocked the focus off. :tap:
chicotunner07 08-12-2008, 04:10 PM that little filter is sucking in air after the MAF, therefore the MAF is not reading the correct amount of air thats acctually going into ur engine, this could be messing up ur AFRs and might even throw you a CEL
just plug it, its suppose to be some kind of intake resonator, to reduce sound
ChelsDS 08-12-2008, 08:31 PM Geez clean that engine bay :P
Why put an air filter on a piece of the intake that isn't even sucking in air? Like chicotunner07 said, it could be messing things up in your car for doing that.
XLR8R 08-13-2008, 04:25 AM i dont think it is takin in enough air to hurt anything. the neck of it is smaller than the hole so i had to tighten it pretty good on there. if anything its just a spiffy plug that lets in a scoach more air.
silver06 08-25-2008, 12:02 AM I am about to do this and it was storming outside so I pulled into the garage and popped the hood and the top of the fact. air box is wet. I haven't drove at all today so if its wet on the air box just from sitting in the driveway how wet would the cone filter get if I was driving it? Would it get wet enough to hydro lock?
chicotunner07 08-25-2008, 12:30 AM no, in order for an intake to suck up enough water to hydrolock, it would have to be completely submerged in water, wich a short ram never will be
youll be fine
silver06 08-26-2008, 12:16 AM Ok now time for my stupid question. How do you take the top of airbox off?
silver06 08-30-2008, 02:39 AM Never mind I got it.
robbiej 09-24-2008, 07:07 PM I just put a K & N cone filter on my car and my CEL can on, I hope it goes out. Anyone else have this happen?
pickledchang 09-24-2008, 11:04 PM hmm, i had done a similar setup with an autozone filter, never had a CEL. did you check that the MAF was plugged in all the way if you disconnected it at all? the only possible thing that comes to mind right now is that ive heard having the filter so close to the MAF can trip a CEL because the air is so turbulent when it swirls in from the filter. that is really strange though. head to autozone or something and have the code pulled?
i would try putting the stock air box back on and see if it goes away to isolate the problem to the filter.
just to make sure, its not the "MAN'T REQ'D" light is it?
robbiej 09-25-2008, 12:30 AM It reset itself, wife drove around paying bills and it turned off after it relearned the airflow I guess. I was hoping that would happen.
XLR8R 10-06-2008, 09:46 PM so does this install take some sort of custome made harnes for the filter? if so what did yall use to make em and how?
