Default making my own intake

good idea or bad? i wanted a short ram intake anyways
why buy weapon r or an injen intake just to shorten it and use it as short ram intake.
if i get some 3 or 4 inch intake piping with no real agressive bends and a k and n filter would it almost do the same as buying a weapon r intake or injen? i can do all this myself for about 70 dollars and it would be a cool project.

let me know your thoughts, i dont have a camera but ill have my friend take pics and ill post em up.

You're going to use 3" or 4" piping? Be prepared for CELs...

The stock piping on the tC is only 2.5" at the MAF, so if you don't crush down at least at the MAF (like the Injen), you might run exceptionally lean, or even throw a CEL and run like-crap rich.

Also, are you planning on making your own MAF flange? All in all, I'd love to see some home made parts, and possibly for sale if it looks nice.

I think you should do it. Just remember as Nychold stated, use 2.5 inch I.D. pipe and you should be ok. Oh and don't put the MAF sensor too close to the filter (it causes turbulance and poor inconsistent readings - lean to rich ), and make sure it is the corrct depth into the pipe.

On a side note, the Weapon R IS a SRI, so you wouldn't be shortening it, as you stated first

^^^ I think he meant buy a Weapon R intake, OR buy an Injen only to use it as a SRI not a CAI. Punctuation is your friend, but seldom seen on these forums.

Ask dr Iso about his GFI intake because you can make a SRI using Spectre parts (they even have a fitting that you can use the MAF on) for about 50 bucks plus the cost of a good filter.

my GFI which runs to the false grill insert cost me about 90 (with the cost of a drop in filter).

yeah i bought the spectre peices, no place carried the right stuff to do it, also i stopped at autozone to get the k and n filter and saw that kit, should i put the 4 inch piece between the piece with the maf or should i just connect the maf piece to the filter, it would be an inch or so away from the filter where if i put the 4 inch piece in itd be like 5 inches or so, im getting this project done today so let me know

thanks, brian

The entire purpose of this thread was to see if you could create your own intake cheaply, and easily. We all know we COULD drop $300 on a bling-bling part, but who cares? How original is that? Modding a car isn't about what everyone else has done...it's about what YOU can do.

, if your gonna mess with your engine it isnt about a "bling bling part" its about something that is designed for your car, not about playing back yard tuner. some1 else has already messed there $hit up by doing that.

I think making your own intake is a good idea. There is no reason why the stuff out there is better then something he can make. A lot of brands were all started as grassroots. If you need help on designing let me know.

won't the car sense the large amount of air coming into the engine and automatically adjust the fuel amount?

it should, but its better to disconnect the negative terminal of your battery so you reset your ECU

That would eliminate the possibility of running lean.

It looks like ____, but the performance was great, gas mileage was the same as stock, and it went 6 months without a CEL. The only downfall is it's loud as hell.
