Default Change in Oil?

I've been using Mobil oil for the past four changes. And the car seems to idle more rough than when I used to go to my dealer and using Toyota. I've been thinking of using Castrol; since I heard it's better quality oil for sport compacts. There is actual Castrol fast lube shop near my house and I figured to give it a try. I'm just wondering if anyone else uses Castrol and do you recommend Syntec, GTX or something else?

I just drive way TOO much and I just want to give the best for my tC.

i don't like castrol..

Mobil > Castrol
by ALOT.

Mobil has probably has the best oil out there.. but i prefer Redline, and a few friends like Royal Purple.

as far as filters... i go with Toyota's

castrol gtx is what my toyota dealer puts in it. seems fine..smooth idle...if its the same weight, then it seems like you shouldnt be able feel a difference. a better oil is mainly for longevity of the car and heat dispacement. i know in winter adn really cold mornings, the thickness can definately matter though.

I put royal purple in mine, i really like it alot. I think its a class 4 oil, and mobil on regular synthetic is a class 3. Might want to give it a try.

I forked the extra 30.00's for Synthetic yesterday. They let me choose between Pennzoil or Mobil so I went with Mobil.

Odd thing is, on my bill it stated they used "5W-30???" When I know Toyota recommends 5W-20????? I didn't noticed it until couple hours later. Should I freak out about it???

The car drives quite well, no idling rough...nothing strange has happened.

I also use 5W30 (but conventional) and the car is fine. I use 5W20 in the winter.

I use 5w30 royal purple on my car... with Mobil 1 oil filters since they rated the highest in the latest tests.

I have a '08 and in my owners manual it says 5w20 in warm weather and 0w20 in cold weather. I just did an oil change at 1000 miles and put in Mobil 0w20 because I live in Buffalo NY and it gets cold fast here. Royal Purple is a better oil in the long run and I want to put it in my car and do my own oil changes but I dont know how doing your own oil changes and my extended warranty are going to work out.

My '07 should use 5w-20, but Toyota has so far used 5w-30 for all my oil changes. Guess they didn't get the memo.

Why is this alway brought up? Do a search

I figure if your just driving everyday oil wont really make that much of a differance as long as you do maintance.

If you dont agree with me than why is my dads 92 Chevy with 192k miles running fine on the "on sale" oils and a 3 dollar filter?

I did do my research....But sometimes personal experience is the best route specially when its comes to a car meaning one "F" up you're "F-ed!" When people ask about financing, or Scion/ Toyota accessories...I'm always willing to ask their questions.

I knew about Synthetic oil is better than conventional. I just didn't know if our Scion perfers it and figured to ask people on here if their tC's run better with it.

I would definatly have to tell you to run AMSOIL it's %100 synthetic..grab an AMSOIL filter too. But I also would have to say Mobil>Castrol. Mobil used to have some of the same properties as AMSOIL a couple years back.

if your scion is idling rougher it sounds like an air/fuel issue instead of oil. and mobil oil is some of the best you can get. i suggest running a can of seafoam thru your car. it works wonders on gas mileage, idle, and acceleration.

I've put in Fuel System cleaner; seems like it's been better.

That's not a very good example..... for instance. A guy i work with has a farm, his truck has 230K miles on it with dino oil and has NEVER, i repeat NEVER had an oil change, he only adds oil when it burns up. He bought the truck at 120K miles or so, and the owner even told him that's the way he's always done it, and it worked for him.

So why don't you give that a shot in your 08 tC? There is always gonna be that one engine from the factory that just won't die. It has been proven time and time again that synthetic is better than conventional, people that say , ehh just use conventional are the ones that usually think if they make it to 150K miles they had a good car. I plan on getting to 300K in mine , i'm over 100K and still purring like a kitten and idles smoothly

Sorry to threadjack, but its easier than starting another thread. When is it a good idea to get the first oil change. Everyone tells me when I hit 1k miles and then every 3k or 3 months, but my salesperson told me to just get them just like Service manual says (every 5k or 6 months). So which one is it? I'm thinking of getting Synthetic so I can just follow the 5k/6months more easily.

I follow by the Maintenance Required light....If I can remember correctly; it will start flashing when you start up the car around 4k-4,8k miles. Telling you to make the dealer appointment. If you don't replace during the flash period...it will stay on (Please!!! Don't make this mistake...My dealer wanted to slap me around for driving on it when they heard I did it.)

Since I'm stuck on 72 month loan & drive too much....I still change Synthetic every 3,000 miles but I will drive on it little longer meaning I will drive with the Maintenace light on.

For some strange reason, I'm always at minimal oil line within couple of weeks getting new oil change. I hope there isn't problem I don't know about.

No problem about jacking the thread...That's why I always ask these type of questions when "Search" can't get me the answer.

I don't know the exact mileage...My computer is totally screwed up since I resetted the "Maint" light on my own. The last oil change shop I went to has my O.C. mileage for 61,400-ish on the reminder sticker...now the mileage for the car is 61,500-ish the light hasn't turned on yet. I know it's down the road; I hope around the time I made my appointment for the dealer. Finally get my car back on track! Thank God!! :D They remind me about everything; I have major problem remembering to do things due to working nights.

But they are going to have fun since I didn't warn them about switching Synthetic while making the appointment. They better carry Mobil 1 (I see no reason why they wouldn't cause they are also Chevy dealer) or I might have to fork extra cash even more for them to get me some. I think I might call them today and tell them to do major Maint work also if they do have Mobil 1 and if not; can I bring in gallon for them to use. Tom the Tech better not yell at me again...he already lectured me about not spending the proper money to maintain my tC back in May; I haven't been back since cause I didn't have the money.
