View Full Version : How much Sound Deadening Material
stc08 10-22-2007, 11:21 PM I am starting to have my system put in, so far they just finished buiding the (2) 10" custom fiberglass sub enclosures, the subs are 1000W max., powered by a 800W Monoblock Amplifier, just going for a hard hiting system, not looking to win any competitions, or set off alarms....well that leads me to my main question, how much sound deadening material to buy, some have said 60 sq. ft. and others 30. well now knowing what my set up is..every suggestion would greatly be appreciated.
and to give you a peak of what my sub enclosures look like here they are, they were finished today, but now have been dropped off to get painted Flint Mica 1E0 same metalic color as my exterior, did not want to go the carpeting route:

Yanki01 10-22-2007, 11:27 PM nice boxes but very expensive. where are you planning to use the deadending? I bought 60sqft or Elemental Designs eDead v1se and was able to get my hatch area, both doors and a good amount left over. I personally would of gone with carpet to keep it clean. What subs and amp are you using? FYI, you never want to go off of the "peak or max rms". Its another way of getting people to buy thinking they will hear the max and you dont want to power it up that high.
recommended and many to choose from...

07ToOcOoLs 10-22-2007, 11:29 PM Well do you want to dynamat the whole car or just the trunk area? Im not sure how much square footage to use but I bought 3 dynamat extreme trunk kits (dynamat 19405), which each one contains (5) 18"x32" sheets, and I was able to do my whole car, (trunk area, hatch, back panels, doors, floor, etc.) and I still had some left over.,.
stc08 10-22-2007, 11:43 PM i just want to deaden the trunk area for this set up, i have already purchased 60 sq. ft. of Elemental Designs eDead v1se to be used to do my front door panels, and rear quarter panels, but that is going in at the same time my system does
Yanki01 10-22-2007, 11:53 PM i would say to do the doors and rear pannels and see how much you have left then go from there? what are the subs and amp?
stc08 10-22-2007, 11:56 PM (2) Pioneer TS-W257D2 10in. Subwoofers.
Pioneer GM-7300M 800W Amplifier.
blazeplacid 10-23-2007, 01:13 AM I used between 160-180 sq ft for the entire car.
2 layers on the floor. 3 on the doors. 4 layers on the rear fenders. 2 layers on the hatch.
Its a big ___ job. Took me a good 3 8 hours days to take everything out, dampen and replace

about how much in sq. ft. do you estimate you used for the in the rear hatch alone.
30 sq. ft. maybe.
07ToOcOoLs 10-23-2007, 05:16 AM It really depends on how many layers you want to do. 30 sq. ft. should be fine just for the hatch...
nebster 10-23-2007, 05:28 AM i have close to 200 ft in my car, 30 for the doors + 10 teklite, 40 for the rear pannels + 20 tek, 60 for the floor + 30 tek and 40 for the rear + 10 tek
ROUGH ESTIMATES

yeah one layer 30 sq ft will be fine
stc08 10-23-2007, 01:21 PM well i just ordered another 30 sq. ft. of eDead v1se, i now have a total of 90 sq. ft. for my car..do you think i will be ok with this amount to do my (Doors, Rear quarter Panels, Hatch, and Hatch Floor). Maybe i will even have some left over to apply elsewhere if need be...what do you all think am i good to go.
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 02:17 PM start with the doors and rear sides, then go from there, but 90 sq ft should get ya really far.
stc08 10-23-2007, 02:32 PM i was just wondering about something do you think i should add some to inside my custom fiberglaSS enclosures ^pics above^..they are pretty solid, but again im a newbi
blazeplacid 10-23-2007, 02:53 PM I wouldnt put deadner in a box.
It should be braced internally and be soildily built
stc08 10-23-2007, 03:01 PM Great thanks, i didn't think so..they are extremely solidly built.
nebster 10-23-2007, 03:11 PM yeah i'd throw a layer of v1se in it. it'll help out more than you think.
stc08 10-23-2007, 03:42 PM yeah i'd throw a layer of v1se in it. it'll help out more than you think.
Thanks for the tip
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 03:47 PM maybe put some edead V4 on the backwall of it. but i wouldn't put v1se in it.
nebster 10-23-2007, 03:51 PM v4 will compress due to the pressure from the subwoofer and become ineffective. . put a layer of se in it.
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 04:52 PM v4 will compress due to the pressure from the subwoofer and become ineffective. . put a layer of se in it.
have you used V4? i doubt a sound wave will compress it.
nebster 10-23-2007, 05:23 PM yes i have used it and after extended use from what i hear it will compress it.
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 05:26 PM eh idk
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 05:28 PM maybe use an egg carton foam or just polyfill. the only thing i would see being of any use inside a sub box would be something to trap the rearward wave so it doesn't bounce back at the rear of the cone. but i have read it doesn't matter much for subwoofers but more for mid-bass and midrange drivers.
nebster 10-23-2007, 05:31 PM i'd just do it for a perfect seal, a better weight and more thud do it. you don't want your sealed box resonating or vibrating.
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 06:45 PM that is true but build it right from the start and it should not resonate.
nebster 10-23-2007, 07:13 PM you can't get away from fiberglass resonating
Tcguy85 10-23-2007, 07:32 PM ^ oh i see, i have never used fiberglass so i didn't know.
stc08 10-23-2007, 07:45 PM since i am a newbi and my enclosures are fiberglass can you please explain the whole fiberglass resonating situation..thanks
