I just went to the scion dealer and i sat in a 5 spd which mine should be here in like 4 days, but i was going through the transmission pattern, and i figured that u dont have to press the clutch down to go into any of the gears, is this normal, or did i just overlook this on all the manual cars ive driven

 

was the engine off?? that's normal if the engine is not running

 

oic alrite thx yeah the engine was off, so once i start it up, i cannot move into any gears without the clutch correct? or can i but it'll just stall

 

yeah, the engine will stall if you're not going anywhere and you lift off the clutch.... but it is possible to shift gears (while moving) w/o using the clutch... but again, that's on any M/T vehicle

i've actually shifted my car with out the clutch... heheh oo boy. it was sum hard stuf. and yes there was grinding.. but only a lil. not as bad as you think

 

no grinding, here.... just have to make sure you're at the right rmp

Care to explain how you are shifting without the clutch?

 

It is possible...there is a "sweet spot" in the rpm range where you can shift w/o the clutch...It is usually a pretty low rpm though and not to handy for everyday driving (at least that's how it was in my mkIII 2.0 Jetta)...or you can rev the ____ out of it and jam it into gear (which I would not suggest). :D

 

well i like driving my car. i don't want the car to drive me

like 3IGs said it is possible to drive without the cutch with those sweet spots.
if you hit the right rpm it will shift like butter!

if this is your first time with manual. take your time learning. i self taught myself how to drive and people comment me on it. like i'm some sort of racer, double clutching and all. you can downshift without a clutch too. it's all about experence and skill.

A few years ago, I took a road trip with a friend in her brand new Mitsu Mirage.. I had been driving for a day, and I decided to show her a few tricks cause she's just a beginner on a manual tranny. Clutchless shifting came to mind.. I had never done it, but I gave it a shot anyway. I shifted three times -- two up, one down, I believe -- without touching the clutch! It was SO SMOOTH she didn't know what was going on -- it even surprised me!

I don't know what it was bout that car that made me want to do that , or that made it so easy.. I guess I was just in a zone!

If you match the RPM of the engine with the RPM of the transmission, the shifter will just slide into gear. It's easy to do when upshifting, but more difficult when downshifting.

When upshifting, if instead of pushing the clutch in you just pull the shifter out of gear and toward the next gear (I'll use 1st to 2nd in this example) it will tend to fall in. So, accelerate in first, pull shifter out of first while releasing the gas, and continue pulling back towards second. When the engine RPM drop to the same speed as the transmission RPM, the shifter will drop into second. You need to get used to how much pressure to use and how quickly to shift; if you use too much or too little or shift too quickly or too slowly, you'll get some grinding. When downshifting, you do the same thing, but you need to blip the throttle to raise the engine RPM to match the transmission, then the shifter will move into the lower gear.

actually power shifting is shifting using the clutch but not letting your foot off the gas.

 

exactly. they shift without the cluth in diesels all the time. to smoothly do the clutchless shift it helps if you car has good synchros if not it'll be a pain. hell old school cars had to be double clutched to shift correctly. i wouldn't do too much no clutch shifting in a brand new car but thats just me. i'd definately try it in an older car.. i remember old school aircooled vw automatics. anyone elses experience those? pretty rare but they had a clutchless manual really u had to shift but u didnt have a clutch . pretty damned pimp for it's time

 

Note to self: Must ask broker to find name of company that supplies shift forks and synchro gears to Toyota.
