just got an '05
this car is wonderful.
does anyone know how to change the front dome bulb? does the white lens pop off or does the whole assebly pop off and how? also, i found a weird nylon square with velcro strips down each side, is this anything? also, the left city light bulb wasn't working so i put in a new one and that's not working either. the right one works so i don't think it's a fuse; any ideas? also, can someone point me towards the best trim retainer removal tool?
i have an electronic version of the service manual for any helpful souls. it's jumbled around, but you can use the search feature of your pdf reader to find topics. domo.

First, welcome to ScionLife!
The front dome light is a little tricky to get to but the lens part does pop off. If you look at the side of it you will see a small notch between the lens part and the plastic trim, you need to get a small tool and stick it in there and pry the lens off. I don't know if you got the scion first aid kit with your car but if you did then grab the scissors from it. Believe it or not those scissor blades are the perfect size for that notch, just shove one of the blades in the notch and pry the lens off.
I have no idea what the velcro strips are for, those are defiantly not standard and must have been from the previous owner. When you say city light bulb do you mean parking light? If it's not working even with a new bulb then you might have a wiring issue, the fact that only your left one is out makes me think that its not a bad fuse but it would be a good idea to check them anyway.(make sure you check the fuses under the hood and inside the car)
As for our trim, almost everything can be removed with just your bare hands and a screw driver. I can only think of one other tool that might be needed depending on what your doing. Don't know what its called but it has a screw driver handle but the tip of a crow bar, its used for removing the snaps in the headliner. If you have the service manual it should tell you how to remove each individual piece. But the best place to find How To's is in the Tech section of this site... https://www.scionlife.com/tech/
You can find a guide for almost anything there. Hope things work out for ya.

thanks sanchez,
i see where you're talking about on the dome lens, in the middle furthest from the driver. it's really thin and i tried a small tool, but i don't want to deform the bezel any more than was happening, and the lens wasn't budging.
the velcro thing, it was weird. just a nylon square about 4inx4in (padded) with hook-side velcro running down each side. it was stuck to the floor area in the back seat. just wanted to make sure it's not used for something inside.
yeah, the trim removal tool is what i'm looking for. they're different sizes so i want to find the right one. i tried plucking the inner hatch panel off (that's how you access plate bulbs right?) but they're in there so good that a couple just came out of the panel instead, so i stopped.

Anyways, I've seen that tool that you need but from what I've heard they don't sell them in any of the usual places(homedepot, autozone, O'reily). I'll look around online and see if I can find one for sale. Also, I posted some good info about the plate bulbs awhile ago, you can read up on it here... https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=179268
