The O2 sensors will drive the ECU crazy with the air fuel mixture adjustments without the cat reaction.

the cost of paying fines isnt worth 1hp from removing the cat........your better off keeping it on......i think there was a comparison in Import Tuner about cats and straight pipes and there was like a 1hp gain out of the straight pipe which isnt really worth it IMHO

well in some places you dont have to pass emissions. The county im registered in doesnt require me to. Also there is a dummy sensor that you can buy for around 20 dollars that keeps your computer going crazy.

Ideally you would want a new A/F map so that it gets richer at wider throttle openings and normal to a little lean at light throttle openings to make up for the wasted gas at richer settings. Getting the A/F ratio in teh 12 range yields about 20% more power than at the 16-18 to 1 range where you get max economy. A better tuned exhaust for higher RPM's will also help maybe a better header although the stock one is pretty good. Some guys are running low shots of dry NOS with good results and plenty of reliable miles on their systems - approaching 100k miles. Getting more fuel and air into the engine and making it burn faster are the only way to make more power.

You can change the O2 sensor feedback and get an over all richer mixture but you want to tailor the A/F mixture differently so that you want rich at full throttle HIGH RPM only and normal to a little lean at other light throttle positions. Usually it requires a "Black Box" connected in line with the sensors and injectors to modify what the ECU sees and does to what you want it to see and do . . . run richer. Search the Turbo threads for what they use.
