View Full Version : Anyone's xA have squeeks or rattles?
matt_a 10-26-2004, 12:20 PM Okay guys, I'm getting nervous. I've made up my mind to sell my truck and buy an xA. One of the main reasons I decided to go with a Scion is Toyota's great reputation for quality. I figured that if I'm going to give up my truck (which has been a great vehicle) to go with a small economy car, I at least wanted a well-built car. My 2000 Silverado has been rock-solid with no squeeks or rattles at all. I was hoping for the same with the Scion, but now I've been reading some real horror stories on here about the tc's. Has anyone been getting that crap with the xA's?
Cybergypsy 10-26-2004, 12:36 PM Nope not a rattle, creak or squeek
mikochu 10-26-2004, 12:36 PM I have rattles in my driver door accent panel. I got it fixed once, gonna get it fixed again soon. Also, there's rattle somewhere in the dash...
Ashe_WCM 10-26-2004, 12:41 PM I had a Squeek on my driver side door where I forgot to lock the panel back in all the way. other than that nothing. and i got over 3-5 RRXings to and from work every day.

That brings up a good point too. I wonder how many people who get rattles, have taken their cars apart to do mods.
Like I said, most of the problems I read were with the tc. I just kinde figured that it was because the tc is a new model...right? Where as the xA has been a proven model (ist) in other countries for a while. I really don't want to get a car that's going to sound cheap and junky within a year.
PandaIst 10-26-2004, 05:36 PM There's also a drivers side door rattle on my xA. It only tends to show up when i play music with lots of bass. I got use to the rattle that it doesn't really bother me anymore.

Funny thing. I just noticed that today listening to Du Hast. I'm sure if i got in that panel with some Dynamite (Errrr Dynamat) I could get rid of it. Not really that noticable till you said something tho.
stellarhavoc 10-26-2004, 07:48 PM I got the same door rattle :x
SuperxA 10-27-2004, 08:18 PM try open you window half way and drive, you will hear something.
Ashe_WCM 10-27-2004, 09:27 PM try open you window half way and drive, you will hear something.
Alot of cars do that. my echo did that. it only happens if one window is open halfway and the rest arn't. something to do with the air trying to get out and in at the same time. ever hold a soda bottle completely upside down when it was full and watch the soda come out in big gulps instead of flowing smoothly? same thing only with air. I'll admit the first time i hear that popping i nearly ____ed myself. but you crack another window or two and it goes away.
mikochu 10-27-2004, 09:44 PM what a waste of soda...
djct_watt 10-27-2004, 10:03 PM rattle in the dash, but its probably my fault. . . those damn t-taps for the subwoofer/amp I put it are plastic and I think are rattling.
axiom 10-28-2004, 03:12 PM I've got that stupid dash rattle as well, The dealsership can't seem to find the source, so i'll have to keep going back until they do. It is really anoying.
FragMaster_B 10-29-2004, 06:30 PM I have 2 noises that are currently buggin the eff outta me (NO MODS RS):
The first may be what you guys are talking about with the dash. I narrowed it down to the plastic beam that goes from dash to hood on the passenger side. Mine seems to be a little loose at the bottom and vibrates against the actual dash to cause the noise. If I push on it a little at the bottom the noise goes away... for a little while. Need to go into the dealer and see if they can tighten it.
The second noise I have seems to come from the rear passenger side. Kinda sounds like glass on plastic. Only seems to happenwhen I hit a bump like a RR track or pothole. I suspect that it has something to do with the tonoue (sp?) cover in the trunk.
Wookie 10-30-2004, 03:33 AM I have a dash rattle that seems to eminate from the gage cluster. I also get a little bit of a rattle from my moonroof inside cover when it bounces (I don't see this as a problem though). The dash rattle can be a little annoying though.
boilerman 10-30-2004, 10:13 AM I have no rattles yet but the noisy stock Bridgestone tires make up for a lot of rattles. If I only drive on wet roads the tire noise is not bad. So perhaps I must install a tank of water in the front of the xA to spray water strips in the path of the tires.
joshtravis 10-31-2004, 03:30 PM I had a dash rattle for a few weeks. It was the interior lighting under the dash tapping against the dash. I just applied a little pressure with my thmb and the tube backed off the dash enough to stopp rattling.
The first subwoofer I got with the car rattled a lot too. Scion had to replace it.
Carlanga 11-01-2004, 05:17 PM I do have some rattle to coming from the driver door, dash (sounds like a lose washer) and in the back (I think is the retractable thing, not quite sure). Does anyone has ways to fit it, because it drives me crazy sometimes.
Red_xA_Road_Warrior 11-03-2004, 11:19 PM I have a rattle from the back whenever I hit a bump. A new one just started in the driver's side door panel 2 days ago. I'll probably try to fix them myself, but if I can't, I'll have the dealer look at it when I have my first oil change. I've had very bad luck with rattles being fixed under warranty by dealerships in the past, though I've never dealt with my local dealer before. They always say they can't repeat the problem or say they fixed it, then it shows up again 2 days later. It seems to take about 4 times before it actually gets fixed.
drivenapollo 11-08-2004, 01:08 AM I know that i have read that a couple people, and my self have a rattle in the left vent. They can fix that with some felt material they have. No door rattle hear. I have 2 12s and i have them pounding a lot, and still no rattles from them, and i have 8000 miles on mine. just my input
Vince007 11-08-2004, 02:22 AM Maybe you don't hear rattle because you have your 2 12's blasting, no rattle is loud enough to over come the blasting sound of your rap cd through 2 12's. LOL
Or your ears has simply gone bad from your subs....
flat__tires 11-08-2004, 10:29 AM the number one thing passengers note about my xa is the amount of outside/road noise they don't hear. and having spent lots of my time underneath the scion, i'm quite amazed by the amount of sound deadening material i found. the underbody doesn't seem to have any undercoat with the exception of some plastic looking material but the inside is well put together as well... could hardly find any sound deadening material...
staypuft 11-08-2004, 04:13 PM I have a 05 xA its yet to make a noise that i can complain about.
kamskii 11-08-2004, 08:19 PM Mine does. Rear passenger side. The windows makes a squeek whenever it gets bumpy or when I am making a sharp left turn. It seems to only happen when I have the windows shut, but no noise when rolled down...
jmp867 11-09-2004, 02:31 AM Yeah, I have one, front dash rattle. Not sure exactly where it's coming from... I'll have to take it in.
It usually only happens when I'm accelerating.
I have a minor rattle somewhere around the dash. Sounds like the wiper blades are rattling against the windshield. Haven't solved the mystery yet.
bbcrud 11-09-2004, 03:08 PM I have rattles in my driver door accent panel. I got it fixed once, gonna get it fixed again soon. Also, there's rattle somewhere in the dash...
Whenever something get's "fixed" it should stay that way. Look at your paperwork and see what it was they fixed. If they have to do the same job over then A.) It should be free and, B.) You may need to wonder about them.
Most in-dash rattles we have seen ended up being related to accessory installations. FM modulators, gauge clusters, etc. Same thing for doors.
If you're doing your own mods be sure to take the time to do a thorough job. If your dealer created the problem be sure to be firm with them that rattles are not acceptable. Some of them may tell you they cannot duplicate the issue. Take them for a drive, make them sit near where the rattle comes from and then drive them around. They'll either get motivated or show their true colors.
Later.
axiom 11-09-2004, 04:24 PM I don't know about anyone else, but I have not done any mods in my dash, and the rattle has been around since I got the car, the dealership also said they could not find or hear it.
natejeng 11-10-2004, 12:41 AM Ever since I bought my xA in June I have had rattles in my driver-side armrest assembly. Since it is a three part assembly there are more parts to rattle together. One day I heard a loud pop from the top piece of the armrest. When I looked down I saw a two-inch crack in the plastic. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the top piece and tightened everything together and now I have no rattles. I have not done any mods to my xA so it may have just been a defective part that caused the rattles.
Skrewed 11-10-2004, 01:27 AM Yeah, I have one, front dash rattle. Not sure exactly where it's coming from... I'll have to take it in.

I have the same damn problem!! very annoying!! I am hesitant to take it back to the dealer only to have them waste my time by telling me they can't find anything! or tear up my dash and make things worse! I am really not too crazy about this car so far, it has no balls! not very good on gas! and now mysterious rattling noises! I regret not getting a Civic or even a Corolla! Actually next time I think I am just going to support my country and go American! These foreign cars engines may go 300,000 miles, but the rest of the car is built like crap!! F Greentree!!! :x
There's also a drivers side door rattle on my xA. It only tends to show up when i play music with lots of bass. I got use to the rattle that it doesn't really bother me anymore.
I get the same problem in the door. Only when playing songs with lots of bass. It doesn't have to be heavy Rap bass either. I found the place on the door that I have to push to fix it. You have to push the front section of the silver strip. About where the door handle is, or more to the front.

I get no rattles when driving.
camnewyork 11-10-2004, 03:58 PM I had a buzzing type rattle in the dash. The dealer (Hoselton Scion in Rochester) found and fixed it. It was the cowl vibrating against the window, they shimmed it and it is gone. I developed another rattle the next week at tracked it down the the ashtray. I don't smoke so I just removed it and I have been rattle free ever since.
Eski628 11-12-2004, 01:33 AM I have a dash rattle but i listen to my music @ like 40 cause I usually drive on the freeway with my windows down.
Driver door silver piece on the inside. Due to the Boston pro 6.5's being crossed over at 100 htz. Other than that I've begun Dynomatting it. I'll find out pretty quick after I'm done with all the extreme mat. This thing will be as quiet as a LS400 by the time I'm done with it. I'll prolly fall asleep driving it.
I just started putting fatmat in the doors of my xA, makes a world of a difference. It feels and rides more solid and quiet. I'm thinking about doing the section behind the wheel well so I can deaden some of that tire noise, but I haven't found a clean way to approach it yet...
Any ideas?
