Default maintenence light came on @ 12,500 miles, whats up

my maintenence light came on around 12,500 miles

i thought all i had to do for the first 30,000 was just change oil, replace air filters and maybe rotate the tires. what am i forgetting?

i did recently put a cold air intake on, and for about the first 500 miles i didn't realize i didn't have my vacuum switching hose on so that the unused gas could evaporate. this caused my check engine light to come on, and the maintence light went on while i had the air flowing from the outside on the warm setting with no fan on. after i put the vacuum switching hose back on my check engine light went away, but the maintenence light is still on.

i don't think the vacuum hose has much to do with the maintenence light, but i thought i'd mention it just in case.

thanks in advance

is it blinking about 7 times or so when you start it up then goes off...if so its actually your oil change reminder...all you have to do to fix it is...

1. Turn on the ignition and make sure it is on your odometer display, not the trip display.

2. Turn off your ignition. Hold down the trip meter reset button and turn the ignition on. Keep the button pushed in.

3. The maintenance required light will flash for a few seconds. when it turns off, let go of the reset button.

it used to blink 7 times or so upon startup around the 11,000mile mark. when i saw this i did get an oil change at the dealer, but it still blinked after that.

and then it went on around the 12500 mark and never turned off.

is there a button or something the techs are supposed to push when they change the oil so that this maintenence light doesnt' blink or stay on?

i'll check the oil

thanks dane, you're the greatest

could it be anything else though?

This is how you reset the light, they didn't do that when they changed your oil for you so next time you go reset it yourself.

OMG! READ YOUR FREAKING OWNERS MANUAL!!!

the mait req. light is just a reminder to change your oil on a regular basis.

at around 4000 to 4500 miles, it blinks to remind you that you should change your oil soon, and at 5000 miles, it stays on to tell you it is definetly time to change your oil!

it doesn't actually know if you have or haven't changed your oil, it is just a timer and needs to be reset, and it will stay off for another 4000 miles. if there is something actually wrong with your box, the check engine light will come on, not the mait. req.

thanks drax, i read the manual... though it was awhile ago. that's why i only thought of oil changes, air filter changes, and tire rotations, just wanted to know if i forgot something.

thanks for explaining the maintenence light also drax.

sorry for bugging you though.

the problem is that it should be common practice to read your owners manul and when you have a question about it, consult it first. if the answer isn't there, then search, don't find your answer after that, you are more than welcome to post your question up here. it just gets alittle borring seeing the same questions posted up by people who are too lazy to figure out how to properly maintain their car and listen to the little lights the the manual translates for you.

thats the thing, i looked in the manual. and i did everything in the manual (except rotate tires, do you all actually rotate them that often, haven't done mine yet), but the light was still on.

if anything i could've searched a bit more on the forums, but i'm doing that now and getting more ideas of things to do.

thanks all

this is what happens whe you don't rotate your tires:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...619&highlight=

one, it is a rule to search before you post, you agree to that when you join this forum. and when my mait. req. light came on for the first time, i freaked out for a second, then opened the manual, read what it was, and calmed down.

thanks drax i understand, but i posted my question along with the bit about my intake install wondering if perhaps i had a unique problem.

i also did state that i looked in the maintenence guide awhile ago and didn't see anything other than oil changes, rotating the tires and replacing the air filter (just double checked the maintence guide, states you don't have to change the air filter till 30,000 miles)

i just looked in the actual manual and found what you're talking about drax, but i thought the maintenece guide was where i'd find my answer.

thanks dane for helping me solve this issue.

and thanks for the link to the tire rotating thing drax.

i love this forum, and have used it more than anything else on the web since i've gotten my xB. there's always something to learn here, and someone to learn it from.

thanks again everybody for all your input, i'm open to it all, and open to learning as much as possible. i've never had a car i did anything more to that pump gas and refill wiper fluid.

well, what can i say, i'm very critical of car owners, when my gf referred to something in her brand new xa as "the thingie", i locked her in her room with her owners manual and made her read it. i wasn't going to help her with her new car if she didn't have a clue what anything in it was called or what it did.

Hey Drax, I'm with you! I work at a dealership and us mechanics get ____ed when customers come in to the dealership complaining something doesn't work or can't figure out how to set something in their cars. I wish I can scream at them and tell them to READ THEIR FRIGGIN OWNERS MANUAL...
