View Full Version : Rear View Camera??

Has anyone done one yet??

I want to remove the rear view mirror & install a 7" LCD, with a wide angle rear view camera in the back in the hatch or glass, plus then we can watch DVDs or play PS2/Xbox while parked.

The only bad thing is, that there is no keyhole to use, so it will have to be custom fabbed, but that's OK with me.

Any Comments??

I've been thinking about it too. The best place that I could think of is the rear water sqirter. They make the cameras small enought to fit in that hole. ??? Let me know if you decide to do it before I do and I'll let you know.

Best thing to do is take out the rear wiper and a camera will fit perfectly in there. Unless you use the rear wiper a lot. It'll also get rid of the rattle from the bass if you have a sub in the back. Not hard to do.

I've seen that in 2 or 3 xB's. BlueNRG has it in his wiper hole

I'd wanna keep the Wiper, 'cuz after all it is FL.

I was thinking about inside behind the hatch glass, or maybe in the bottom of the spoiler.

We'll see about where the best place is, to keep the wiper.

In this month's issue of Performance Auto and Sound (which I have lost) there is a rear view camera that fits within the brake light. I'm sure that it would mount in the OEM location. It's made for SUV's so I'm sure that it will fit on our cars. It should be les than the ones you getr overcharged for at the Lexus dealers.

Wow! Sounds like just the ticket.
Does the mirror get longer or does it drop down more?
Where did you see that?

I'm interested in any articles or demos of how well it worked.. I had been thinking about it but then worried about a screen that may be used for GPS as well having to share time w/ a rear view mirror and how to arrange all of it

car companies are starting to do that to their production vehicles, they are using cameras for all the mirrors and the lcd screen is in the steeringwheel. i think it is dodge doing it on one of their hybrids coming out.

THIS IS THE FUTURE, do it now before it gets played out by all the companies making it a standard option.

Hopefully then some companies will come out with retrofit kits for thier older vehicles.

Yes! The SAVV monitor/mirror (http://qualitymobilevideo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=LBMS5000). I've installed one of those before. It was $299 before shipping, as seen in the link.

SAVV makes some good monitors.

HEY! I found my old RVC/Screen thread.

I will be doing this, this weekend (as long as the parts get in in time.

it will be a custom mounted (rear-view mirror replacement) 7" MonkeyVideo screen (Mucho Gracias violent b) & a 90 deg 0-LUX Reversed Camera from eBay seller kawamall.

I'll post pics when it's done (& I get a chance)

the screen is here at my house. I think we can do the work at the house, I'll just bring the tools home. maybe after we can swing by the shop and you can see the new project I'm working on.

If your intentions are keeping the read wiper, you can always do what this one guy did here in Phoenix. On the bottom left of the rear bumper, you have the cover for the tow hook. That little cover pops out with quite a bit of force, so a small camera will hold nice within there. If you get a wide angle or fish eye in there, you would be well off. It is actually a clean install and easy to replace, just pop a new cover in there if you ever need to. I'll try and find some pics.

^^^^^^I also think this is a good idea because having a lowered box, I always worry about hitting curbs and small children and midgets and whatnot, so a lower sitting camera will give a better view nearest the ground. Just my .02

I was looking around and found this alternative to widening your wiper hold as most have had to do to get the camera installed.

But I might put one in the rear tow-loop plug later.

Some of the new Ford trucks now come with a back up camera installed in the tailgate handle and have the monitor built into the rear view mirror. It just looks like a ordinary mirror until you shift into reverse then a small square on the left hand side appears and it becomes the screen. The screen is almost invisible when not in use. I priced one out and it was rediculiously expensive to order the parts. Cool option though.

I would like to have a camera on the bottom of the rear spoiler. Just still trying to figure out how to do it for a reasonable price and look good.

I put mine in the tow hook cover panel. (The little removable square of plastic on the left side of the rear bumper. I didn't wan't to cut the original one that came with the car, so I ordered a replacement from the part desk. Cost about $5 for the part.

Downside is that it is not a central view.

So, where do you run the wire? I ve seen some kits and think pepboys has one with a monitor for70 bucks. I just want to run the wire professionally than along the door sil.

Shan14
06-19-2008, 09:45 PM
I think I've seen a kit at one of my local Costco that is wireless. The camera needs to just tap into power somewhere in the back of the car, and the monitor runs on batteries or cig lighter. Not sure how good the unit operates, though.
