Default Steelies vs Alloys for Winter

I am going with a 16x6.5 or 7 inch wheel with either dunlops m3's or bridgestone blizzaks (195/55/16).

Which type of wheel is better to get in winter?
Will steelies hold the tire pressure sensors?

If steelies are better where do I purchase them besides on ebay. They are not available on tirerack(where I am buying the tires) and they seem to be hard to find in a 5x100 bolt pattern. Tried craigslist too.

I honesty dont think it matters what kind of rim they are sitting on. Get a good pair of winter tires or all season tires and your set. Always try to wait until the plows do their job.

Steel wheels for a '00+ VW Jetta, Golf, GTI, Beatle are available from Tirerack. They have the same 5x100 bolt pattern and fit great. I got snow tires on steel wheels (no TPSs) for the winter. I also unplugged my tire pressure computer in the car to get rid of the warning light on the dash for the winter.

On my '08 the TPS computer is pretty easy to get to. First remove the glove box (pop the dampener off the right side, push both sides of the glove box in to clear the stops on the outsides and open the glovebox past the dash. Then pull straight twords you to pop the bottom out). Then, under the dash pop out the pannel above the passenger foot well.

If you look straight up from under the dash there is a small box, roughly 3"x3". That is the TPS computer. Mine was a crazy bright purpleish color. It also says TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM or MONITOR or something like that on it. I simply unplugged the connector.

steelies are better because salt can eat away at the alloy rims.. plus.. when there is a lot of slush and snow, you are more likely to hit a pot hole and steel rims can be bent back if you bend one. also its just plain easier to have snows on steelies and summers on the alloys...

They were giving out plenty of them at Scion Exposed back in September; I got mine from a guy who won some, but couldn't use them since the only wheels he had were his 17" stock rims.

This is what I was rolling on last year:

Doesn't look too bad on its own, but it's also what the Chrysler PT Cruiser has for hubcaps. I'm not using them this year since I have the Scion 8-spoke 15" hubcaps.

how are 15s compared to 16s for winter though? I was originally going to get 16s but if the 15s are just as good I will get those since they are cheaper. I cant find steelies anywhere though that fit the tC, tried previous advice above (vw steelies) and tirerack told me they wouldn't fit (not because of bolt pattern but some other reason) I might have to buy alloys from tirerack as a package although it is going to cost me more (another $200 more which I dont have)

I got my wheels at VIP or Tire Warehouse, i dont remember. they were like $50 each. You can look on craigslist to get some that fit on a corolla, i have seen a lot of people selling their snow tires mounted on there lately. Check it out.

Yeah I wish I had won some of those hub caps now, at the time I was like why would i need those? Then I was driving back home and was like S**t I need those for the winter! Oh well!
