yeah, i'm japanese, and i knew what it meant in japan, but didn't know it was so popular in the US. to me, its just a colored symbol that means "student driver". some even put the kareba mark, the orange-ish leaf sticker, meaning that you're a senior citizen behind the wheel of a car. my japanese friends and i start to laugh when we see either or both pasted onto civics.
