im not towing, im putting a motor into the backseat of my xB. the motor roughly weights 400lbs and there will be me (175lbs), my friend (140lbs), and another friend possibly (200lbs). can my xB handle this? i know the car CAN tow 1000lbs but is it pushing it for my drive?

for anyone that knows the area, i am heading from irvine, taking the 405S to the 5S down to San Diego and then heading from San Diego back to Irvine and then taking the 405N to the 605N to 210W up to Pasadena. roughly 200 -250 miles

 

the answer is the gross vehicle weight, which is the maximum amount of weight the car can be while still competantly traveling down the road. it should be listed on a sticker on the driver side door jam, and in your owners manual.

so to figure it out, start with the curb weight (the total weight of the car along with a full tank of gas and all the necessary fluids to operate it), and from there add the weight of you, the driver, since you will have to be there obviously, then the weight of the engine, then, if you aren't near or over the gross vehcile weight you can bring your friend.

and, no the car CAN'T tow 1000 pounds, it isn't rated for that.

 

oh my bad. i had done some reading before i posted and i thought people were saying it can tow it but is pushing it.

yeah, it is kinda irritating to me, so many people tow stuff with their scions, but scion specifcally says they are not rated for towing. if they were, they would say so because it would be another selling point to list.

 

I dont know if it is bad or not, but when I have me (150lbs), my girlfriend (110 lbs), bestfriend(150 lbs) and two other people (130lbs and 180lbs) the back end of my car sinks down quite a bit. Right now I have stock suspension on my car, but it looks like it is dropped on df210s or some coilovers when they are with me. Speed bumps and my driveway make it scrap REALLY bad everytime with them in my car... I have to make them get out... lol

 

okay, so i just read in another thread, the xb is rated to carry an additional 825 pounds. so...

400+175+140+200=915. so your 90 pounds over weight.

so you'd be pushing it just a bit.

 

Tell your friends to lose some weight asap, so you can carry the engine. haha.

 

the manual says 800 lbs max to answer your question. I read it after work everyday, lol.

 

you can go over the max weight.
but it will drive very different.
ive over loaded my truck a few times.
it takes longer to break so don't speed.
the steering acts sluggish and you can feel alot of body role.
90 pounds over will not hurt the car, but if you have to do it just take it easy.

 

on a regular basis I carry over 1000 lbs with no problem, so you should be fine with the motor in back

 

I removed my rear seats! hehe.

 

and on the towing aspect an echo can tow up to 1k.

and you should be fine to tow within your payload capacities.

and also in the payload capacities a full tank of gas and an average 150 lb driver weight is already factored in.

 

You should be fine to pick up the engine with your car. I have towed a dodge neon with my XA without any issues. I wouldn't suggest doing it again but an engine and some friends will only pose a threat on speed bumps. lol. Good luck.
