I just purchased my new XA over Christmas. I loved the car, and I even got the Auto, not the manny tran. So, I had them add the Cold air Intake for some more power. Now, the salesperson, the sales manager, and the parts manager, all three told me that it would add 10 HP to the engine for a total of 118. But, I have read countless other posts in other forums which say the HP added is more like 4 at the most. Did I get ripped off for $375 bucks, or was I told the truth? I mean I was truly hoping for 10 HP more. The dealership is top notch by the way, with a great rep, "Maita Toyota of Sacramento." This is the third car I have bought from them. So I did trust them at their word.
anyone with some help please reply,
Thanks,
John

You're not going to get 10 hp for sure, but I notice a difference in my xB. It's not really loud at all, and you don't hear it if you have the radio on. Under hard acceleration, the car seems to rev a little bit faster. Personally, I think I should have waited for another intake to come out, the Injen seems to be the one to have, but buying mine at the dealer saved me the install time, so it was worth it for me.

that might be 10 hp at the crank. But at the wheeels is what makes the difference. I have the aem intake on my xb, and its good for about 4-5 WheelHorsePower or W.H.P

Really? So it's better than Injen's?

umm please view all the intake DYNO results and blow outs..
u decide for yourself.
no intake on the market puts out more than 5hp to the wheels.

as soon as i get my xb i am going to tear it apart and make an intake that is less resrictive(less bends) all the bends in the AEM intake take alot of power away from it, when i get it i will post the results and dynos.

wheel hp is all that really matters the aem probably get about 3 most people when talking about hp gains they are talking flywheel which is a lot higher you loose hp when going to the wheels so the 10 hp you may have made but to the flywheel and that means jack when your talking wheel hp. :o (still waiting till feb. to get the xA)

Lets just say they used that 10hp as a Flywheel calculation..and rounded UP to the nearest 10.

on a manual trans car you lose about 12% of the stated flywheel HP at the wheels:
The Scion's are rated at 108hp, and from what i've seen most dyno around 95whp (whp = wheel horsepower) - and that's a 12% loss. some are higher, some are lower, but that's just the normal variation between production cars.
so if someone says a mod makes 10hp at the flywheel - then you're probably talking about 8.8whp
I dynoed my car with my intake and my car gained between 5 and 5.6whp (peak) so it was making 5.6 - 6.27hp extra at the crank (aprox.)
so with that in mind i doubt we'll see an intake that makes 10hp even at the crank for our cars, they just aren't suited for huge gains from intake mods, i think 3-6whp gains will be the range for intakes, from any manufacturer.

Well, at least they lie consistently. I wouldn't believe it if someone at a dealer told me the sky was blue until I checked it out for myself.
But, I have read countless other posts in other forums which say the HP added is more like 4 at the most.
It could be 4. It might even be minus 4. You just can't tell without putting the car on a dyno for before-and-after tests. There is some dyno data on this and other sites, but be careful and consider the source. If you're in the business of selling intakes, how would _your_ dyno data look?

Well, if you were sold 10HP for $375 you were ripped off. Nowhere have I seen any "official Toyota" figures for the AEM CAI. I'm willing to bet that nobody at the dealer signed anything guaranteeing that power gain. If it isn't on paper, they can say anything they want.
