View Full Version : cleared tail lights
turtles808 10-30-2004, 08:42 AM Just cleared the rear lights. Left the top on in because I can't find a red replacement bulb. The middle is only amber from the flash.
What do you guys think? I think it matches the white better then the candied red.

bBted 10-30-2004, 08:47 AM looks great!
how did u take the lens apart???
turtles808 10-31-2004, 12:52 AM The lens are just snapped together with a rubber gasket in between. didn't even have to do the oven method or anything.
I used a couple a flathead screwdrivers. at least on small and one extra wide.
I started with the side top clip and pried the housing over the lens. then used the small screwdriver to keep in from popping back in, i did the top on next. now with both out, you can start from the corner and slowly work your way down the side with the wide screwdrivers and the small one to press the clips down. the last 2 at the bottom just pop out when you get the sides off.
the red lens just pull off. they are not attached to well.
next just make sure the gasket is still good and snap it back together.
bBted 11-04-2004, 04:42 AM do u have any pics of the process? i really want to take apart the housing...
i tried...but no luck...they dont seem to seperate

Max2k 11-04-2004, 11:38 AM Nice, but very illegal.
randode 11-04-2004, 04:35 PM i cleared my stock ones too, but took out all of the red. very illegal, but so are my new Helix lights.
Max2k 11-04-2004, 07:06 PM It actually looks pretty nice if you paint the surface behind the reflector black. It tones down the red a lot and won't impact the performance or legality.
Just curious, but what makes this illegal, just the fact that the lenses are clear? If so, is it still illegal even if using red/amber bulbs?

what makes it illegial is the lack of a REAR reflector
oic, and I take it the reflector for these is the red part that was taken out? I have never opened mine up to look so I don't know :)

You got it 8)
TheDanger 11-10-2004, 01:33 AM guy in my club has done this...looks really good!
turtles808 11-11-2004, 01:37 AM If you can leave the red cap over the brake light, this would take care of the "illegal" part since law says the rear just has to be red while operating.
Thinking about fabricating some city lights for the back, or angel eyes that go around the edge of the housing. So the cap can be removed.
TheDanger 11-11-2004, 04:38 AM in florida...you must have a rear reflector...
Yeah, same here in WA. I just looked it up. Cool that we have the Revised Code of Washington online :)
For anyone that's interested:

Although, according to this, it doesn't necessarily have to be your tail lights that have the red reflectors.
Max2k 11-11-2004, 01:57 PM g33k in redmond, did bill gates buy an xB?
lol, I wish. I am just one of many around here, hehe.
silkywilson 11-11-2004, 04:43 PM Put a small reflector on your liscense plate frame.. there are companys out there that even make BLACK reflective vinyl... itll reflect at night but not visable on a black LP frame... trixs of the trade....
turtles808 12-10-2004, 06:43 AM Ok, I finally got the lights and time to do this and post it.
If anyone is still interested, check out the link.
Sorry about the delay.

djct_watt 12-10-2004, 07:17 AM in florida...you must have a rear reflector...
I believe ALL states require a rear red reflector and amber/red side reflectors, front and rear respectively.
I believe it was one of the NHTC regulations passed (by basically threatening to revoke federal funding, if states did not opt to adopt all rules, such as the national 55mph speed limit, which is no longer in effect).
hotbox05 12-10-2004, 10:56 AM yep its federal.
Ashe_WCM 12-10-2004, 01:18 PM The front must have an Amber reflector visible from 120 degrees, the rear must have a Red(or Amber i think) reflector visable the same. and when they say 120 degrees it's supposed to mean that from any side you can see two reflectors.
I used to have the website with the federal regs, I'll have to look again.
squirrel 12-10-2004, 03:56 PM Yup, Dept of Transportation I believe.

Nice... I'm gonna smoke all of the red the inside, rather than remove it.
Good write up!

TheIcon 03-10-2005, 11:10 AM I don't understand why clearning the tailights is illegal. Lexus SUVs have crystal clear tailights.
Max2k 03-10-2005, 01:19 PM They have reflectors located on the bumper.
firesquare 03-10-2005, 02:32 PM http://www.cardesignnews.com/autoshows/2003/detroit/highlights/images/lexus-rx330-4398s.jpg
this gives a better flow without destroying the look of the taillight.
im guessin if you get a reflector to stick on the bumper of legal size according to your state. you canclear the taillights with no red in them. as long as you have the apporate colors. but the reflector might need a DOT number on it. id ask your local state officials and inspection station about it
djct_watt 03-10-2005, 06:49 PM with a proper reflector, it is definitely legal
firesquare 03-10-2005, 11:16 PM with a proper reflector, it is definitely legal
hmm this gives me an idea. :ponder:
