Default My Box gets 23mpg ON A GOOD TANK!

How am I getting such horrible mileage? With my 18 yo driving, I get 20-21mpg. When I drive like a sane professional, I get 23 MAX, but even then I still get closer to 22mpg. What is wrong with my xB that can be draining gas compared to everyone else's 30+mpg? I sold my Crown Vic Police Interceptor so I could get better mpg (going from the 13 that it had from harsh driving police officers), but this isn't completely satisfying me; well, besides the gorgeous car now, hah.

Any help would be great!

Maybe your air filter is real dirty? Spark plugs might be jacked up? Fuel system issues? How many miles do you have on your box? And how many miles on the current oil change? It could be a combo of problems...

SLO-BOX I have 42,500 on it. Last change on 40,000 and done every 3,000 -5,000 (depending on what the dealer said) by the previous owner (has all records to show it). I just bought the car a month ago, and it's sorta been bothering me.

Air filter, where is it? Again, complete newby to auto work.
Spark plugs, is that something I can do with a more car friendly neighbor? Or is it a dealer thing?

Silverstreaktc - The tires are in good condition and maintaining great pressure.

I've been getting about 21 per tank, but that's kinda spirited with the heater on max and letting my car warm up (remote start) for between 5-10 minuets every time I go for a drive.

During the summer with the ac on sparingly I was getting about 25-26 in my 06 Auto.

All the 30+ mpg you see is on manuals and mostly highway.

ok so a few simple things to checks

1. new airfilter
2. spark plugs (should be changed at 30,000miles)
3. tire pressure (i have mine set at 42psi stock goodyears)
4. crazy but cheap gas i noticed i get better mpg's with shell then with arco
5. keep fresh syntheic oil in the motor and dont use a heavier weight oil

thats all i can think of good luck ! i had the same problem when my box hit 28,000 miles i needed new plugs

well, you have to consider weight, do you have a system on your ride.. i,e box, speakers and you got to consider your after market wheels are they chromes ??? after market chrome wheels make a big difference compared to your steelies... those people who claim to get 30mpg are driving an empty box,, just ridding on chassis...

Hmm, that seems a bit low. I been testing mine since I got it a month ago and I'm averaging 29mpg but I haven't been running the tank completely dry, for obvious reasons.
Just last night, i stopped to fill up at about 276 miles on a full tank.
If I can follow the limit more often and switch to synthetic, i should inch a lil further to 300miles.

Im getting between 24 and 27, Im 18 and do admit to driving like a race car driver, cruising at 85-90 shifting at 4-5k rpms jack rabbit starts, I have gotten as high as 32 on a trip to upstate VT. Although I would love the 30+mpg regularly I cant bring myself to drive like Im 80 yet.

I have a turbo kit with manual and I still get 30-31 on a good tank usually doing the speed limit or up to five over, avg about 300 a tank, and I commute a lot a lot of freeway miles, anyways as always there is always a bad side to every good story, If I am rippin on it and really stomping on the turbo, I have gotten as bad as 20 to the gallon, haha hard to resist the temptation but the rising gas prices, don't really make it worth it all of the aforementioned are good ways to ensure adequate mpg, good luck!

I've had a low of 25 (city only) and 33 (hwy only) with an amazing 38 one time coming down from the mountains. I don't know what it is, but maybe it is just your xB. I had an 02 Ranger 2WD with a 3.0 and AT that would average 12 city and 16 highway. There was no reason the mileage should have been that bad.
