Chevron 87 octane. I have an account there so I use Chevron 99.9% of the time. It's one of the "top tier" brands so that's good. I steer clear of Arco.

A dealer told me you'd get higher mileage with 89. It sounded like bs to me but if it's true you'd have to see significant gains to compensate for that extra 10 cents/gallon.

so 87 octane is safe to use on a new car? sorry i came from a subaru and have been used to 91 all the time coz of the turbo, now that i have the xb, i still have the feel to put 91, so thats why im asking, i was thinking just 89 but didnt really wanna put 87, thanx for responding back, out of all the gas ive tried, ive felt more of a response with the shell gas, my bro on his vw felt a difference too in the response, thanx for the response guys

87 is fine. That's what's required by Scion/Toyota and anything more is a usually a waste of money. If the engine was designed to run on regular gas, then you will get no benefits from higher octane. There may be exceptions with extreme conditions (like climbinig hills and other demanding activities) but I can't pretend to know much about that.

Shell is a good brand. Check this out:

Theoretically speaking (14 gallon tank):

24mpg = 336 miles
"extra 35 miles/tank (using 91 octane) = 371 miles = 26.5mpg

14 gal @ $3.50 (87) = $49
14 gal @ $3.70 (91) - $51.80

You pay $2.80 more per tank to get an extra 35 miles out of it. Roughly speaking, your gains in mpg are cancelled out by the extra you spend for higher octane.

It's pretty much a wash. So if there are performace gains with 91, then sure it looks like it might be worth it!

Use only the recommended 87 octane. Higher octane fuel is of no benefit with this motor. Higher octane only costs you more dollars, and wastes more natural resources
