Default Stock exhaust in a turbo setup

I tried searching, but I couldn't find any solid answers. What are the negative side effects (other than being restrictive and less hp) of not upgrading your exhaust system? I'll be running a zpi stage 1 (with AEM F/IC) and custom 2.5" intercooler setup. I plan on running between 8 and 9 psi. I just want to make sure that there won't be any boost creep, excessive wear on the turbo, etc. before I get a new exhaust setup. Thanks!

Back pressure!!!! It's not that fast but it will wear your turbo. Besides that you're already know that it will take more time to make those 9 psi!!!

restrictive exhaust on a turbo set up, more backpressure, more turbo lag.

and if and when you do upgrade the turbo, you'll need to retune so you don't get boost creep.

boost creep is when the boost psi starts going up above your maximum desired psi level.

playinwithfire told me how he put zpi exhaust on his tuned turbonetics kit, and it would gradually go up from the preset 8.5 psi towards 9 psi and such.

Boost creep on external wastegate set ups??? Some kit manufacturers use dump tubes right off the wastegate also so that is Unlikely as the catback plays no role on the wastegate. If the kit is internally gated than maybe but in that case you can port the gate on the turbo.

Think of all the high hp stock turbo cars out there. To name a few (wrx/sti , evo, mazda3, srt4) they have restrictive baffled exhaust from the factory so its not as bad as you think. If you are that concerned about cops or whatever it may be, than keep your stock exhaust by all means. If the kit you are buying has an external wastegate than your biggest worry is simply losing some horsepower while taking longer to hit max boost.

Thanks kydog, that's exactly what i needed to know. It is an external wastegate dumped back into the downpipe. I really don't want a loud exhaust because the cops out here have nothing better to do. I'm installing the kit on Saturday. Thanks for the help everyone!

Np, although your wastegate isnt "dumped" if it plumbs back into the downpipe. As long as you have a decent boost guage youll be able to see if the wastegate is doing its job. Keep an eye on your boost gauge or get a gauge that registers peak and warnings.

Im sure your kit has an s-pipe so if worse comes to worse, just get a midpipe from tsudo or megan and eliminate your 2nd catalytic converter than run your stock axle back and you should be fine and the car will be very quiet. Or just go to an exhaust shop and have them cut your converter out and weld piping in its place.

From the sounds of things, your not going to run too much psi and your wastegate should get the job done just fine. Good luck and post up some results!

Thanks a ton man. Yeah I'm running the Zeitronix setup, which has the peak and hold feature, so I'll definitely keep an eye on boost. Good idea about the cat, I'll definitely have to consider that.

Also you can use an electric exhaust cutout in case you need more power in a desire moment!!!
