View Full Version : Did you upgrade the speakers?
xdnme 12-06-2007, 11:21 PM Hey everyone!
I am considering upgrading the stock speakers in my XD. Have any of you done this? I am curious if there is anything special about the factory speakers that should be pointed out so I should avoid upgrading. I bought the base model so do not have anything more fancy than the stock HU.
I mostly listen to Rock and some Dance Techno and LOTS of podcasts (which are just talking). Thinking about an enclosed sub, 5 speaker amp, and four new Focals. What do you think? Any brands you are personally fond of or would avoid? Any major chain stores that you like or dislike?
Thanks in advance for your insight!
BloodySunday 12-06-2007, 11:23 PM talk radio is annoying as hell with subs.
ChelsDS 12-07-2007, 03:55 AM I've heard that just replacing the headunit makes the sound quality much better in the xD. For my xD I'm looking to put an amp and a sub in it, but have no idea how to find a good one for a good price or out to install it.
M2-Motoring 12-07-2007, 07:23 AM i'm doing a whole sound system in my project using all memphis car audio parts. 2 sets of 6.5" M class component speakers, 2 10" mclass subs 2 Sclass 500 watt single channel amps and a sclass 4 channel amp =) i'll update you when its done
postman 12-07-2007, 03:02 PM Did you set your stock Radio to XD???????There are 3 setting..You will notice a change...

offroadinfrontier 12-07-2007, 04:14 PM talk radio will suck @$$ with a sub, so make sure to get an amp and/or a head unit with an easily-adjusted subwoofer control.
zoltiz 12-07-2007, 04:27 PM Remote gain control for the sub is a very good idea if you listen to spoken word. I'm big on audiobooks lately, so subwoofer was off for a while and then was completely taken out of the car, being useless and all.
xdnme 12-07-2007, 04:35 PM Wow! Thank you SO much for the info. I had no idea that a sub with talk radio would be bad news. I will make sure to get one with some sort of switch so I can turn it off.
In terms of settings, I have mine set at TC right now as it sounded the best to me. I'll keep fiddling with it and see what I get...LOL. I do not want to replace the HU as I actually like the interface plus I think it would be a low priority target for a thief.
In terms of installation, I figured I would let one of the audio stores take care of that for me. Installing equipment is not my forte...
exige 12-11-2007, 09:39 PM i currently have a sale on CDT speakers right now if you're interested. please have a look: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=3039720#3039720
katchkillah 12-15-2007, 08:50 PM i use mb quartz q-series mids and highs and then digital design subs and concept amps. but for the xd may go the zapco route.
XD_2_NV 12-23-2007, 04:42 AM I instaled my 2- 12" JBL subs in an inclose plexyed box and the amp to the back of my upgraded Pioneer headunit, the back of the headunit has the AUX for the sub and for another output, in another post that I read it told me that there were no holes through or a way to put holes through the firewall... I wish I would have read that before I installed it, because that took the most time trying to find a way into the cab. I ended up finding a way into the cab through the wheelwell under the plastic, that is the only way into the cab that I could find to put my powerwire through. Taking out the headunit was suprisingly easy and the rest wasn't hard at all. Taking away the time it took to find a way into the car, it took only 30min to install, adding the finding a hole factor, 1hour 15min. Hope this helps for future mods.

Sorry guys, newbie here, how do you change or set this feature? What does it do exactly? I have the base Pioneer stereo.
killeatandrepeat 04-07-2008, 08:15 PM You hold down the big middle button to go thru the 3 car settings. I think it's called SSL.
Runawayrogue 04-08-2008, 06:19 AM Upgrading your headunit and speakers will definately make a difference in sound... it should get much cleaner with the right combo. The upgraded Scion deck is pretty nice, actually, but a bit spendy. Still, if you want to keep your Aux and Ipod hookups, you don't have a lot of choice. Also, it has its own seperate control for the sub, which is real nice.
I'm partial to Infinity speakers for the doors. You get a nice crisp sound from their Reference series usually. Just make sure you have a sub if you want lots of bass.
I want to drop a sub in the back SO bad... but I have to find a way to do it that doesn't comprimise space...
killeatandrepeat 04-08-2008, 08:40 PM I'd really like to replace my rear door speakers. (with stock Head Unit) They are nowhere near as loud as the fronts. Any idea what sizes they are? Can I put bigger ones?
libima 04-08-2008, 09:28 PM the rear door speakers are 5 1/4, but can be replaced very easily with 6 1/2.
SeattleGuy 04-08-2008, 09:36 PM Don't know original size. Haven't made any changes myself but have never been steered wrong by crutchfield.com. They say up to 6 3/4 will fit with an adapter bracket (free if you buy speakers from them). Original speakers are 3 flange, symmetrical, riveted in.
You can get complete rear speaker removal/install info (and much else) at toyota.techinfo.com. Not free but all service manuals are available.
bakerja 04-10-2008, 04:59 PM as another poster mentioned, setting the head unit to the correct "XD" setting makes a huge difference. I read this thread and checked mine and sure nuff, it was set to TC from the dealer. My guess is that the guys doing the head unit installs are not fully trained and do not realize that they need to set it. Made such a difference that I am perfectly satisfied with the stock sound. At least for a while until I can afford a nav unit.
xDevious 04-11-2008, 02:56 AM i am severely disappointed with the stock sound, even on xD. songs with any bass just sound terrible. i need to do SOMETHING, it's driving me crazy.
pickledchang 04-21-2008, 03:24 PM id like to upgrade just the door speakers for now, but am looking to find what the best sounding speaker would be. i listen to rock mostly. anyone know what brand would probably be best for the xD?
XD_2_NV 04-22-2008, 07:13 AM I would stick to Pioneer and add one or if you really want to hear the beat two 10s, dont go twelves at all they are better for Hip Hop and Rap. One JL 10 would do you just fine and upgraded components by Pioneer!
pickledchang 04-25-2008, 02:09 AM is there a model or series of pioneers you would recommend? looking to purchase off of crutchfield.
