Thank you all for all of your concerns of my well being!!!! I was the only one in the vehicle, thank God... I'm doing okay, just got home from the hospital at 3:30am, been there since about 5:00pm last night... Just a lot of stiffness and soreness..

Windowtint---- It rained up here in Birmingham.. The accident happened about 1 mile past University Blvd. on 65 South about 1 mile after me getting on the interstate to head to Montgomery...

UnFocused----Yes, the Tractor Trailer slammed into me from behind.. I had just got on the interstate and traffic started to slow down. I slowed down with the traffic and checked my rearview, natural reaction to see what is behind you, and saw the 18 wheeler coming up fast. So I veered over to the emergency lane, being that I was already in the far right lane of traffic, so the 18 wheeler would have enough braking room but the 18 wheeler came right behind me at the same timeinto the emergency lane, guess he had the same reflex. So while we were both still moving he slammed into the back of my Scion and the impact forced me off the interstate into the gully. And that was that..

Thanks again everyone for your concerns!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad your not badly injured, I hope.
Sometimes these injuries can show up later.
So be careful about signing off on insurance until
you've had some time to see if your healing well.

Sounds like you were being
a very responsible and defensive driver.

Best of luck getting repairs and a replacement xB. :!:

I almost got nailed by a double FedEx truck on 95 in the same situation. I hope you're doing well Mr.L! :(

With that type of semi, he probably lost sight of you for a moment...in a straight hood rig the driver cannot see someone less than 12-18 feet in front of them but obviously he was not paying attention to the traffic conditions ahead for the speed of travel.

I used to push 18 wheelers myself and drive home in a VW. :? I want to remind everyone especially in these little cars that we disappear from sight from these big rigs very easily because of the blind spots. The right front corner is the most dangerous spot and many people are clipped by trucks because of a misjudgement of the distance if they see you at all. "Watch out for the other driver"

You were smart to try to get out of the way. If I looked in my rearview and saw an 18 wheeler barreling down on me, I'd probably freeze with fear. Something similar nearly happened to me years ago in my Celica.

In order to turn left into my neighborhood, I have to slow to a near stop on a street that is one-way in both directions if there is traffic coming the other way. Usually people behind me just pass on the shoulder when they see my turn signal and brake lights. One time though, I was sitting waiting to turn as usual, and I glanced up into my mirror and I saw this Corolla headed right for me, not slowing or moving to pass at all.

All I could do was say "Oh sh*t." The people in my car were like "what?!" but no words would come out of my mouth. Then at the last possible second, the girl obviously looked up and saw me, then swerved right to avoid hitting me. Then she corrected left to stop from going into the woods off of the shoulder. She ended up spinning out and stopped facing me in the opposite lane. Lucky no one was coming down that side of the street to hit her.

Odd thing is that I knew the girl. She went to the same school as me. We all pulled over to the side of the road and she was so shaken up. It took like 10 minutes to calm her down and get her to stop shaking enough so she could drive home. I think she said that she had went to change the radio station or something and hadn't noticed me sitting there waiting to turn.

That was probably the scariest thing that ever happened to me. I guess I was luckier than you, but you were luckier than a lot of others. Glad you're ok. Do you plan to get another xB?

So, the insurance company will naturally try and screw you over, but hold your ground !

Oh crap, here we go .... blame the trucker for everything, right? Im in an interesting spot here. I have a RS1, and drive a rig that looks very similar to the one that hit you ... a KW W900L. Mine is an extended frame ( meaning that the rear wheels sit 6 feet further back then a normal semi ), and is royal metallic purple in color. Chrome everywhere, the damn truck cost just over 90K. I haul pavers for a living now, and run with 50K#s of brick on my trailer. I make 3-4 runs a day, loging 300-400 miles a day, all local. Now that you know where im coming from, let me fill you guys in on a little secret.

BIG TRUCKS, NO MATTER WHAT THEY HAUL, NO MATTER IF THEY ARE LOADED OR EMPTY, CAN NOT STOP LIKE A CAR! You really cant appreciate how long it takes to stop one of these trucks unless you drive one. Driving my rig is much like driving my xB, minus the 13 speed tranny, and the fact EVERYTHING is on a scale 3 times that of the xB. With a 475 HP Cummins diesel under my hood, i can get up and go like there is no tomorrow. Until recently, the shear power of my truck scared me. I have never driven a truck with this much power, and with that comes a lot of respect. As a truck driver, i know that i have to respect the truck and its load. If i drive like an idiot, innocent people can and will get killed. This is not my mission in life. I too would like to have a family some day, but i also like the money i make by driving truck.

As a truck driver, i erge all of you to give us truck drivers a break. Dont shoot in front of us with little to no room. Dont stop suddenly to prove a point. STAY OUT OF OUR BLIND SPOTS. IF YOU CANT SEE ME IN MY MIRRORS, THEN I CANT SEE YOU! Just like me driving my rig, THINK! I wouldnt put you and your loved ones at risk, dont put yourselves there by driving like _______s.

BTW .. i speak for myself and all the other drivers out there who give a damn and drive like the lives of others depend on it. I know there are those out there that dont belong behind the wheel of a 40 ton truck. But dont let them ruin it for those of us who drive correctly.

CBSIMONSEZ-----First off ASSBAG, I never said anything bad about ALL truck drivers. Secondly, I just explained the facts and details of what happend in the case of MY accident not ALL accidents. So before you go on a rampage I do respect and give courtesy to all truckers on the roads. Hell I've got 4 relatives that drive big rigs. In my case clearly this was the truck drivers fault, but did I crawl out of my car and just start going off on the guy and throwing blows? NO i didn't.. After the police took our statements and the EMT's checked us both out I SHOOK THE MANS HAND and told him to drive safe home to his family. And by the way, THANKS for NOT asking if we were both okay.................SO ON THAT NOTE:::::::::::::::

one-way ---- both directions  :?: no wonder its a bad street.

Whoops, maybe I should have worded that differently. I meant to say that there are two lanes, one for each travel direction. So if I'm turning, the traffic behind me can't pass in another lane, they have to slow down or try going around me on the shoulder.

Towson U Girl Drivers  jk jk

Hehe. Actually it didn't happen at TU. I live in AA county, and commute to Towson. This was back when I was in high school anyway. I've seen some crazy stuff go on near school, though.

Coming up Charles street towards the beltway where you crest that big hill, I saw a girl from school in a Cavalier convertible slam into the back of a utility truck. She was probably going about 40 mph and I guess she just took her eyes off the road. The truck was in front of her and had almost come to a stop and she just kept going. By the time she realized what was happening and started braking, it was too late.

Then, another time there was a bad accident on Osler between Cross Campus Dr. and Stevenson Ln., near Unitas Stadium. The cops had to shut the street down. Everyone who was on the shuttle going over to the lots near the stadium had to get off and walk by the accident scene to get back to their cars. There was a Saturn that was completely totaled and there was blood all over the ground. Horrible sight.

Wow that sucks, I had almost the same thing happen to me in Atlanta. Except I did not move to the right. Lava Sandwich!! I would guess they will total it out. It is damn near impossible to fix a roofline that is crinkled.

Be careful with the insurance adjusters. Everything you say to them they will try to use to reduce their liability. If you have an injury, they may even try to interview you and whip out a tape recorder and record the conversation. DO NOT TALK TO THEM ABOUT YOUR INJURIES. If they ask you about your injuries, tell them to ask your doctor. If you are not back to 100% don't settle on the medical part without an attorney. I got hit pretty hard when I was about 23, they paid for the car, paid my 10K in med bills, paid for my attorney, gave me 8k in pain and suffering, and got me to sign off. My back has never been right since and I have to pay to go the doctor every time it goes out. I am now 37. Main thing is not to be in a hurry. They will try to get you to settle asap. They will not offer you a rental unless your car is being fixed. They try to squeeze you by leaving you without transportation. Borrow a car from someone and take your time and make sure you are fully compensated for your damages. If you are unsure about anything, get an attorney or talk to your states insurance commisioner.

MrLavaLava
11-07-2004, 09:56 PM

I went over there today to a Toyota dealership off of Roswell to check out the Nopi xB, the one they did the audio install challenge on, that they have on ebay auction... Man, they have already scratched the paint up on the front bumper and the passenger front fender, that's a damn shame... Other than that it's a pretty good set up... Anyways, Thanks again... L8R...

...So I veered over to the emergency lane, being that I was already in the far right lane of traffic, so the 18 wheeler would have enough braking room but the 18 wheeler came right behind me at the same time into the emergency lane, guess he had the same reflex...

Ohh man that had to be one scary moment. Looks like you took some good measures to avoid an accident, and that the trucker was negligent in not seeing the slowdown soon enough. Glad you came through okay.

Now...I have to state that I am miffed at all the responses earlier in the thread about the big bad truckers and how dangerous and irresponsible they are! This was before your post giving details, which means - in typical fashion - car drivers tending to assume that truckers are at fault in accidents.

I am a trucker. Like the majority of truckers, I do pay attention and drive safely, (in particular keeping a good safe open space between me and the cars ahead so that I have time to stop in an emergency - a very basic rule of safe driving for anyone, car or truck). I know there are a few bad apples in the trucking industry, but this doesn't mean that truckers in general are dangerous, in the same way that the few idiot car drivers I see every day don't lead me to assume all car drivers are stupid.

The responsibility for safety on the highways is to be shared by all drivers, and the guilt is to be reserved until all the facts are in. To me the quickness to blame truckers for problems on the road is a symptom suggesting that car drivers have no idea how to share the road and are not willing to admit that they themselves might have some bad driving habits.

I'm sorry, I don't intend to start an argument in here about the blame for accidents but I could not let those comments go unanswered.

[EDIT: I just now noticed that this is a four page thread but I only read the first page. So my statements apply only to the comments on the first page - prior to your comment giving details of how the accident happened.]

last i heard, Houseof Steel here on SL was selling ( or considering ) selling his RS1. He has a really nice paint job done. If your interested, drop him a line. I believe that he has under 2K miles on it too.

On the subject of xB safety in crashes, Consumer's Union, (publishers of Consumer Reports magazine), have the xB listed as a "recommended" car, in part because of its excellent crash test results. I think this was in the April 2004 issue of the magazine.
