View Full Version : Progress Tech's Rear Sway Works!

Yesterday, while doing my interstate commute, Joe Suburbia's Dakota bounced his new step ladder over tailgate and onto the pavement. Well, at 65 mph it came sliding across 3 lanes at a 45 degree angle like a hockey puck. Headed right at me, I began to twitch the wheel madly to get out of its way and not encroach on the car about to pass me. Well, it was a real sphincter tightening experience but I made it. The manouver required some jerky, sweeping adjustments and if the tail end had its stock swaybar the car would have been too unforgiving and uncontrollable. Fortunately, all ended well.

This bar should be on the stock car, no doubt.

Where did you buy it from, and how much?

I think the cheapest place to buy it is ptuning.com with the scionlife coupon (check the sponsered sales section). It comes out to like 144 shipped or something...

Fubared neckbonenick's post...sorry.. here's the post before I fubared it.

Used the coupon code ($142.45 shipped) and got it here today and installed it. It is a very substantial bar. Bigger and heavier than my wildest dreams. Took me a little while to figure out how to install it because of the crapiest directions I have ever seen Typos, words missing, and one unhelpful picture but I managed. For those interested in this bar IMO it's worth the money. It corners very firm now. Pretty nice.
To those who get it and have a hard time like I did. Here's some pointers:

1. Jack up the back end of the car and remove the wheels
2. Get a couple phone books or somthing to prop up the other end of the sway bar as you thread the bolts on one side and then the other.
3. the bar is installed with curved arc side toward the front of the car.
4. the flag nuts that come with it go inside the hollow cavity and the bolt goes up trough it.

Here's a few pics.

FYI, we offer the Hotchkis Tuning Sport Anti-Roll bar set. The bar diameters are 29mm Front, 13mm Rear. The front bar is hollow and rear bar is an add-on bar that is designed to work in conjunction with factory bar. Includes greasable bushings and mounting brackets. 22 mm. Works well with the stock front sway. Balanced.......

the thing is great I highly recommend it.

However, now that its settled in i'm noticing a bit more body roll (than when i first installed it),

but that is probably b/c i'm cornering more aggressively or getting used to the ride with it on.

Strange. You should not feel much until you push the car in a corner. You should feel a reduction in roll (especially on the XB). The primary difference I felt was that the car does not plow (understeer) through corners near as much. Understeer causes your front wheels to lose grip well before your rear wheels. This is the way most FWD econo cars are set up from the factory because it is safer (more intuative to correct the "overspeed" situation with brakes and steering). Maybe the extreme understeer that I noticed without the rear sway bar was because my car was lowered. Don't know. You should recheck the torque on the nuts after a few miles. Good luck.

well the only time i can get extreme understeer is while in the snow and it hasn't snowed in a long while

and i loc-tite nuts and bolts together

The stock XA does have more neutral handling than the stock XB. The handling improvement would be more apparent in the XB.

I wonder if this bar is too much for the XA? You don't want to have so much rear sway bar that it oversteers (unless your a rally racer). Anybody experience oversteer with the rear sway bar???

The XB with this bar ends up pretty neutral.

i love oversteer lot more enjoyable in the snow :D

Do they make a front sway bar? I like the reviews that the rear is getting.

Is there any problem with mixing different brands of sway bars? What do you guys recoomend for the front? I have seen one by DC and Hotchkis. Any preferences?

I'm curious about the front myself.

I'm so spoiled by the old Porsche, it tracks like it's on rails.

i think replacing the front sway would be a pain in the ___ cause you have to drop the K-frame to get to it
